Ukiyo-e: Japanese Woodblock Prints, the Floating World, Hokusai and Hiroshige

The Great Wave off Kanagawa measures just 14 by 20 inches. It depicts three boats being swallowed by a towering wave whose curling fingers claw at the sky, while Mount Fuji sits small and white in the background. Fewer than 100 surviving impressions of this print exist, yet the image is reproduced on tote bags, phone cases, and the back of Japan's 1000-yen note, where it has appeared since July 2024. The print was made around 1830 by a man in his seventies named Katsushika Hokusai, who produced over 30,000 artworks during his 90-year life, moved house 93 times, and used more than 30 different art names. It is the most famous product of ukiyo-e, the Japanese woodblock print tradition that flourished in Edo (now Tokyo) from the 17th through the 19th centuries.

Ukiyo-e means "pictures of the floating world." The term ukiyo originally referred to the Buddhist concept of a transient, sorrowful world. By the Edo period (1603-1868), the word had shifted to mean "contemporary" or "present-day," and ukiyo-e came to describe depictions of the lives of common people and the entertainment culture of Edo: kabuki actors, courtesans, sumo wrestlers, landscapes, and historical scenes. What Is Ukiyo-e and How Was It Made?

Ukiyo-e encompasses two related forms: nikuhitsu-ga, brush-drawn paintings created directly by the artist, and mokuhanga, woodblock prints produced through a collaborative process. The prints are the better-known form, and they are what most people mean when they say "ukiyo-e."

The production process involved four specialists. The artist drew the design on thin paper. The carver pasted the drawing face-down onto a cherry wood block and carved away everything except the lines of the drawing, leaving a raised relief surface. For polychrome prints, called nishiki-e, a separate block was carved for each color. The printer applied pigment to each block and pressed damp paper against it, using a bamboo baren to transfer the ink. The publisher coordinated the process and sold the finished prints.

The key technical innovation was the kento, a registration mark carved into each block that allowed precise alignment of multiple colors. Before the kento was invented, prints were limited to a single color, usually black ink (sumizuri-e). Historical Context and Origins

Japanese woodblock printing technology is deeply connected to the spread of Buddhism, which was introduced from China during the Asuka period (593-710). In the Heian period (794-1192), Buddhist sutras were printed using woodblocks to produce them in large volumes. The technology existed for centuries before it was applied to images for popular consumption.

Ukiyo-e as an art form emerged in the early Edo period, around the 1670s, with the work of Hishikawa Moronobu (1618-1694), who is generally credited as the first true ukiyo-e artist. His early prints were single-color black-and-white images of courtesans and kabuki actors. The development of multicolor printing in the 1760s transformed ukiyo-e from a monochrome craft into a full-color art form. Suzuki Harunobu (1725-1770) is credited with producing the first full-color nishiki-e prints in 1765.

The Edo period was a time of peace and economic growth under the Tokugawa shogunate. A prosperous urban merchant class emerged in Edo, Osaka, and Kyoto, and these merchants became the audience for ukiyo-e. In the Meiji period (1868-1912), the role of ukiyo-e diminished as new media including photographs and newspapers took its place. However, a new artistic movement called Shin-hanga ("new prints") emerged, utilizing traditional woodblock techniques to capture atmospheric qualities that photography could not reproduce.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)

Hokusai is the most famous Japanese artist in the world. His Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (c. 1830-1832), which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa, is the most iconic series in ukiyo-e. Hokusai produced over 30,000 artworks during his life and used more than 30 art names. His Hokusai Manga, a series of sketchbooks published in 15 volumes between 1814 and 1878, contains thousands of drawings of people, animals, plants, landscapes, and supernatural creatures. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Hiroshige is the other giant of ukiyo-e landscape printing. His One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856-1859) depicts the city's seasons, temples, bridges, and streets with a lyricism that distinguishes his work from Hokusai's more dramatic compositions. His The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (1833-1834) shows the journey along the main road between Edo and Kyoto. Hiroshige's use of vertical compositions, abrupt cropping, and atmospheric effects influenced Vincent van Gogh, who collected Hiroshige prints and made painted copies of two of them in 1887.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861)

Kuniyoshi was known for his dynamic compositions of warriors, historical scenes, and supernatural subjects. His triptychs of battles, monsters, and kabuki actors use swirling compositions and bold colors that feel cinematic. Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806)

Utamaro specialized in portraits of women, particularly courtesans from the Yoshiwara pleasure district. His large-headed portraits (okubi-e) focus on the face and upper body, with elaborate hairstyles and delicate facial features. Utamaro's compositions influenced the Impressionists, particularly Mary Cassatt, who adopted his asymmetrical compositions and intimate domestic subjects.

Toshusai Sharaku (active 1794-1795)

Sharaku is the mystery figure of ukiyo-e. He produced about 140 prints of kabuki actors in a ten-month period in 1794-1795, then vanished from history. His portraits are unusually expressive, capturing actors in mid-performance with exaggerated facial expressions. No one knows who Sharaku was or why he stopped producing prints so abruptly.

Real Prints and Examples

Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa (c. 1830-1832) is the most reproduced Japanese artwork in the world. The wave rises on the left, its curling crest breaking into fingers of spray, while three long boats pitch in the trough. Mount Fuji appears tiny in the background, mirrored by the wave's shape. The print is part of the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series, which Hokusai began in his seventies. The blue used in the wave is Prussian blue, a synthetic pigment imported from Europe that became available in Japan in the 1820s and revolutionized ukiyo-e color palettes.

Hiroshige's Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake (1857), from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, shows pedestrians caught in a rainstorm on a bridge, huddling under hats and umbrellas. The rain falls in dark diagonal lines across the composition. Van Gogh made a painted copy of this print in 1887.

Hokusai's Red Fuji (c. 1830-1832), also from the Fuji series, shows the mountain in early morning light, its slopes rendered in reds and browns against a blue sky. The simplicity of the composition, with no human figures, is striking. It is a study of a single mountain under a single light condition.

Hiroshige's Kinryuzan Temple in Asakusa (1856), from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, shows a large decorated lantern in the foreground of a temple courtyard in winter. The composition uses the lantern as a massive framing device, with the temple gate and snow-covered ground behind it. This abrupt foreground cropping is a Hiroshige signature.

Kuniyoshi's The Three Vassals (1861) is a triptych depicting a board game with a swirling composition of warriors and demons. The three panels together form a single image, and the colors are saturated and aggressive. It shows the playful, popular side of ukiyo-e, where prints functioned as both art and entertainment.

Timeline and Evolution

Ukiyo-e spans roughly 300 years. The earliest precursors are the Buddhist woodblock prints of the Heian period (794-1192). Hishikawa Moronobu produced the first ukiyo-e prints in the 1670s. Suzuki Harunobu introduced full-color nishiki-e printing in 1765. The golden age of ukiyo-e lasted from roughly 1780 to 1860, encompassing the careers of Utamaro, Sharaku, Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Kuniyoshi. Ukiyo-e's influence on Western art is difficult to overstate. Van Gogh collected hundreds of Japanese prints and wrote to his brother Theo that "all my work is founded on Japanese art." He made painted copies of Hiroshige prints and adopted their flat color areas and bold compositions. Edgar Degas borrowed ukiyo-e's asymmetrical compositions and abrupt cropping for his ballet scenes. Mary Cassatt adopted Utamaro's intimate depictions of women for her own prints and paintings. Toulouse-Lautrec's posters of Parisian nightlife owe their flat color, bold outlines, and theatrical compositions directly to ukiyo-e.

The 2025 exhibition HOKUSAI: The Artist Mad About Painting in Tokyo argued that the origin of manga and anime lies in Hokusai's sketchbooks, which used speed lines, comedic stylization, and sequential frames that are foundational to today's manga and anime.
