Benin Kingdom (c. 1200 to 1897 CE, Nigeria)

The Kingdom of Benin, in present-day southern Nigeria, produced one of the most sophisticated court art traditions in African history. The Benin Bronzes are a collection of thousands of brass plaques, bronze heads, ivory carvings, and other objects that decorated the royal palace. A Yoruba egungun masquerade costume (Nigeria) is not a single object but an assemblage of layers of cloth, including imported fabrics, beadwork, and carved wooden elements. The costume completely covers the performer, who becomes an ancestral spirit. The layers of cloth fly outward during the dance, creating a whirl of color and pattern. The costume is the mask: it is the totality of the performance, not just the carved face.
