Nihonga: Modern Japanese-Style Painting, Mineral Pigments, and the Invention of Tradition

Historical Context and the Invention of Nihonga

The Meiji Restoration of 1868 opened Japan to the West after over 200 years of isolation. The new government pursued a policy of modernization (bunmei kaika, "civilization and enlightenment") that included adopting Western institutions, technology, and culture. It depicts a female Noh dancer in white robes, standing with a fan, against an empty background.
