Fan Kuan's Travelers among Mountains and Streams (c. 1000 CE) is a silk scroll nearly seven feet tall. A donkey carries a traveler through a rocky gorge at the bottom of the painting. Above him rises a cliff face that fills most of the composition, its surface rendered in dense ink texture strokes. Between the traveler and the cliff, a gap of empty silk opens up. That gap is not a blank space waiting to be filled. It is mist, distance, and atmosphere. It is the thing that gives the mountain its scale and the traveler his smallness. In Chinese landscape painting, what you do not paint matters as much as what you do.
Chinese landscape painting, called shanshui (mountain-water), is a tradition of ink-and-brush painting on silk or paper that depicts natural scenery as an expression of philosophical ideas about the relationship between humans and the cosmos. The tradition emerged as an independent genre during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE) and reached its peak during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE). It uses a distinctive visual language of brushwork, ink tonality, and compositional emptiness that has no equivalent in Western landscape painting.
This entry covers what shanshui is, how it developed, which painters defined it, and why empty space is the most important element in the composition.
The word shanshui combines two characters: shan (mountain) and shui (water). Mountains and water are the two fundamental elements of Chinese landscape painting, and they carry philosophical weight. In Daoist thought, the mountain is yang: solid, stable, warm, masculine. Water is yin: fluid, yielding, cool, feminine. A landscape painting is not a depiction of a specific place but a balance of these two forces, a visual expression of the cosmic order that governs the natural world.
A 2025 study published in the Culture and Art journal established that Chinese landscape painting constitutes a religious-philosophical meditative practice aimed at the spiritual and visual comprehension of the ineffable Dao. The study argued that the Chinese landscape should be understood analogously to the figurative visualization of religious theological teachings in Christian iconography: it is not merely an artwork but a visual embodiment of spiritual practice. The paintings are made with a brush and ink on silk or paper. The ink is ground from a solid ink stick on an ink stone with water, allowing the painter to control the density from deep black to pale gray. Color, when used, is applied sparingly in light washes. The brush is the same tool used for calligraphy, and brushwork in painting is judged by the same standards as brushwork in writing: the quality of the line, the variation in pressure and speed, the ability to convey energy and intention in a single stroke.
The concept of emptiness (liubai, meaning "leaving white") is the defining compositional principle. Empty areas of silk or paper are not negative space in the Western sense. They are active parts of the composition that represent mist, water, sky, or distance. They also serve a philosophical function: they represent the Dao, the ineffable source of all things, which cannot be depicted directly but can be suggested by what is left unpainted.
Chinese landscape painting emerged as an independent genre during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE). Before the Tang, painting in China was primarily figurative, focusing on Buddhist and Daoist religious subjects, portraits, and narrative scenes. The Tang painter Wang Wei (699-759 CE) is traditionally credited as the father of landscape painting, though his surviving works are known only through later copies.
The Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 CE) represents the first great peak of landscape painting. A 2025 study in the Culture and Art journal explored the artistic thought of the Song Dynasty and its visual expression in landscape painting, focusing on masters such as Fan Kuan, Guo Xi, Ma Yuan, and Xia Gui. The research emphasized the concept of emptiness as both a compositional strategy and a semantic element, reflecting deeper philosophical meanings rooted in Daoist and Confucian thought. The Northern Song was marked by political stability and economic prosperity under a policy of "prioritizing literature over military power." Neo-Confucianism emerged in this period, blending traditional Daoist and Confucian philosophy. This intellectual ferment deeply influenced the concepts and styles of artistic creation. The painter was no longer merely an artisan but an intellectual, a cultural mediator, and a contemplative figure who connected nature and the Dao.
The Southern Song (1127-1279 CE) saw a shift from the monumental, full-scale landscapes of the Northern Song to more intimate, lyrical compositions. Ma Yuan (c. 1160-1225) and Xia Gui (c. 1195-1224) were called the "Ma-Xia" school, known for their asymmetric compositions that place the main subject in one corner of the painting, leaving the rest empty. This compositional strategy, called "one-corner Ma," uses emptiness even more aggressively than Northern Song painting.
The Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 CE) brought a fundamental shift. China was ruled by the Mongols, and Chinese scholar-officials were excluded from government service. Many turned to painting as a form of personal expression, and the landscape became a vehicle for individual feeling rather than cosmic order. The Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty, including Huang Gongwang (1269-1354) and Ni Zan (1301-1374), developed a more personal, calligraphic style of landscape painting. Huang Gongwang's Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (1350) is one of the most famous Chinese paintings, a handscroll over 22 feet long.
The Ming (1368-1644 CE) and Qing (1644-1912 CE) dynasties saw the codification of landscape painting into schools and traditions. The Wu School, centered in Suzhou and led by Shen Zhou (1427-1509), continued the literati tradition of painting as personal expression. A 2025 study analyzed Shen Zhou's Album of Landscapes in Wuzhong, tracing how his brush and ink techniques inherited from Song and Yuan masters while developing his own distinctive style. Fan Kuan's Travelers among Mountains and Streams (c. 1000 CE, National Palace Museum, Taipei) is the monumental landscape of the Northern Song. The painting is nearly seven feet tall, with a massive central peak dominating the composition. Fan Kuan used a texture stroke called raindrop strokes (yudian cun) to render the rocky surface of the cliff. A 2025 study compared Fan Kuan's painting with Guo Xi's Early Spring, arguing that both express the concept of "unity of heaven and man" but convey different natural orders: Travelers conveys stability, eternity, and awe, while Early Spring conveys flexibility, cyclicity, and vitality. Guo Xi was a court painter whose Early Spring (1072, National Palace Museum, Taipei) shows mountains emerging from mist with a sense of organic growth. His brushwork uses "crab-claw branches" to render twisted trees with vivid energy. Guo Xi wrote The Great Message of Forest and Streams, a treatise on landscape painting that codified principles of composition, including the "three-distance" method for depicting depth: high distance (looking up from below), deep distance (looking into the distance from a height), and level distance (looking across from a nearby elevation). This system has no equivalent in Western linear perspective.
Ma Yuan was a Southern Song court painter known for his asymmetric compositions. His paintings place the main subject in one corner, leaving most of the surface empty. This earned him the nickname "one-corner Ma." His On a Mountain Path in Spring (c. 1200, National Palace Museum, Taipei) shows a scholar on a path with a single tree and a vast empty space filling the upper two-thirds of the painting. The emptiness is not absence but atmosphere and distance.
Huang Gongwang was the oldest of the Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty. His Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (1350) is a handscroll depicting the Fuchun River valley. The painting took three years to complete and uses a variety of texture strokes to render different rock surfaces. The scroll was famously burned in 1650 by a collector who wanted it buried with him, and it survives in two fragments, one in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum and one in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
Shen Zhou was the leader of the Wu School during the Ming Dynasty. He came from a wealthy family and did not need to work, which allowed him to paint freely. His Lofty Mount Lu (1467, National Palace Museum, Taipei) is a monumental landscape in the Northern Song style, while his Album of Landscapes in Wuzhong shows a more personal, intimate approach. Shen Zhou's brushwork inherited techniques from Wang Meng and Wu Zhen of the Yuan Dynasty while developing his own more straightforward and unrestrained style.
Fan Kuan's Travelers among Mountains and Streams (c. 1000) is the most studied Chinese landscape painting. Look at the tiny figure of the traveler with his donkey at the bottom, then let your eye travel up the cliff face. The scale is staggering: the mountain dwarfs the human figure to insignificance. This is not a landscape you walk into. It is a landscape that overwhelms you, expressing the Daoist idea that humans are small within the cosmic order.
Guo Xi's Early Spring (1072) shows the same monumental scale but with a different mood. The mountains seem to grow and twist like living things, and the mist that fills the valleys creates a sense of seasonal renewal. Guo Xi's treatise says that a painting should change with the season, the weather, and the time of day, and Early Spring demonstrates this principle.
Ma Yuan's On a Mountain Path in Spring (c. 1200) is the opposite of Fan Kuan's monumentality. The painting is small, intimate, and mostly empty. A scholar walks on a path, a branch of plum blossoms hangs above him, and the rest of the silk is untouched. The emptiness is the painting. It represents the spring air, the distance, and the Dao that cannot be painted.
Huang Gongwang's Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (1350) is a handscroll, meant to be viewed section by section as it is unrolled. The scroll shows mountains, water, trees, and fishing boats along the Fuchun River. The brushwork is loose and calligraphic, with the "hemp-fiber" texture stroke (pi ma cun) used for the rock surfaces. This is literati painting: the landscape is not a depiction of a specific view but a record of the painter's engagement with nature over three years of work.
Ni Zan's Six Gentlemen (1345, Shanghai Museum) shows six trees on a riverbank with empty water and sky filling most of the composition. Ni Zan's paintings are famously spare: a few trees, a empty pavilion, a vast expanse of water. His work represents the extreme of Yuan Dynasty personal expression, where the landscape becomes a vehicle for the painter's inner state rather than a description of the external world.
Chinese landscape painting spans over 1,500 years. The genre emerged during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), with Wang Wei traditionally credited as the first landscape painter. The Northern Song (960-1127 CE) produced the monumental landscapes of Fan Kuan and Guo Xi. The Southern Song (1127-1279 CE) shifted to intimate, asymmetric compositions with Ma Yuan and Xia Gui. The Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 CE) transformed landscape into a vehicle for personal expression with the Four Masters. The Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE) codified the tradition into schools, with the Wu School led by Shen Zhou. The Qing Dynasty (1644-1912 CE) saw both the orthodox tradition of the Four Wangs and the individualist painters like Shitao (1642-1707). A 2025 study in the Journal of Multidisciplinary in Humanities and Social Sciences examined the contemporary expression of Chinese landscape painting's philosophy, proposing a "Technique-Symbol-Thought" tripartite mapping model and three pathways for contemporary transformation: formal deconstruction, symbolic metonymy, and philosophical core reinvention. Chinese landscape painting is closely related to sumi-e, the Japanese ink wash painting tradition that grew out of Chinese painting practices. The brushwork in shanshui connects to calligraphy, since the same brush and techniques are used in both arts. The concept of empty space relates to negative space in Western art, though the philosophical basis is different. The Daoist and Confucian foundations connect to broader concepts of the Sublime in art. For more on East Asian painting traditions, read about Nihonga and ukiyo-e.
