Woodblock printing is one of the oldest printmaking techniques still actively practised. This guide covers the history of ukiyo-e, how Japanese woodblock prints are made, key artists from Hokusai to contemporary practitioners working with the Adachi Institute in 2025 and 2026, and why relief printing on wood remains a vital medium today.
Katsushika Hokusai's Great Wave is the most recognized Japanese artwork in the world. Discover how woodblock prints were made, why Mount Fuji is so small, what the wave means culturally, and how this image designed for a mass market became one of the defining images of world art.
A sumi-e painting of bamboo takes about ninety seconds to make. The artist grinds an ink stick on a wet stone for several minutes, loading the brush with gradations of black. Then, in a series of strokes that cannot be corrected or retraced, the bamboo appears: a stalk, three leaves, a joint. The white paper around the bamboo is not background. It is the air the bamboo grows in, the space that gives it form. When the last stroke is made, the painting is finished. There is no revision in sumi-e. Every mark is final, and that finality is the point.
Sumi-e is Japanese ink wash painting made with a brush and black ink on absorbent paper. The term comes from sumi (ink) and e (painting). It is a subset of suibokuga, the broader Japanese term for ink painting, and is characterized by gradations of a single ink color, expressive brushwork, and the deliberate use of empty space. Sumi-e originated in Chinese ink painting traditions, was brought to Japan by Zen Buddhist monks in the 14th century, and developed into a distinct Japanese art form influenced by calligraphy and Zen philosophy.
This entry covers what sumi-e is, how it developed from Chinese roots through Japanese Zen culture, which artists defined it, and how it is practiced today. If you want to understand why an entire painting tradition committed itself to a single color, sumi-e is where that commitment begins.
Sumi-e uses four tools, known collectively as the Four Treasures of the Study: the brush (fude), the ink stick (sumi), the ink stone (suzuri), and the paper (washi). The ink stick is made from soot, either pine soot or oil soot, mixed with animal glue and pressed into a solid bar. To make ink, the artist grinds the stick on the ink stone with water, controlling the density of the resulting liquid. More grinding produces darker ink. More water produces lighter ink. The gradations between dark and light are the painter's only palette.
The brush is flexible and holds a large amount of ink. A single stroke can contain five or six gradations of tone if the brush is loaded correctly: dark ink at the tip, lighter ink in the middle, clear water at the base. This loading technique, called tsuketate, allows the artist to produce tonal variation within a single stroke without lifting the brush. The paper, typically washi made from kozo (mulberry) fibers, is highly absorbent. Ink sinks into the paper immediately and cannot be lifted or blended after it lands. This is why sumi-e has no corrections: the ink is in the paper the moment the brush touches it.
The white of the paper is not empty space. It is an active compositional element, known as ma (間). Ma is the interval between things: the pause between musical notes, the silence between phrases, the blank area on a painted scroll. In sumi-e, ma is where the viewer's imagination lives. A painting that fills the entire paper has no ma and no breathing room. A painting that leaves half the paper empty has ma, and that emptiness is as composed as the inked areas. Read more about this concept in our entry on negative space drawing.
Sumi-e has its roots in Chinese ink painting, which dates to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE). The technique was developed by scholar-officials who used ink and brush for both calligraphy and painting, treating the two practices as aspects of the same art. Chinese ink painting emphasized the expressive quality of brushwork, the capture of the subject's essence rather than its surface appearance, and the use of empty space as a compositional element.
Buddhist monks brought ink painting to Japan in the 14th century. The monks practiced ink painting as a form of meditation, treating each stroke as an expression of their mental state. The connection to Zen Buddhism shaped the Japanese development of the medium: sumi-e valued spontaneity, simplicity, and the acceptance of imperfection. A stroke that went wrong could not be fixed, and the wrongness was accepted as part of the painting's character.
The Muromachi period (1336-1573) was the golden age of Japanese ink painting. Sesshu Toyo (1420-1506), a Zen monk who traveled to China and studied Chinese ink painting directly, became the defining figure of Japanese suibokuga. Sesshu's landscapes, such as Landscape of the Four Seasons (c. 1486, Tokyo National Museum) and Huie Xiaojiang (1495, Tokyo National Museum), adapted Chinese compositional models to a Japanese sensibility, with bolder brushwork and more dramatic use of empty space. Sesshu's work established ink painting as a major Japanese art form, not merely an imported Chinese tradition.
During the Edo period (1603-1868), ink painting spread beyond Zen monasteries to the samurai class and educated laypeople. The practice of sumi-e became part of cultural education alongside calligraphy and poetry. In the 20th and 21st centuries, sumi-e has spread globally, often taught alongside mindfulness and meditation practices. A 2025 report on the global ink stick market noted that sales of Japanese ink sticks and liquid sumi ink increased by nearly 8 percent year-on-year, driven not only by professional artists but also by wellness coaches, educators, and therapists purchasing sumi supplies for mindfulness sessions. Sesshu is the towering figure of Japanese ink painting. A Zen monk who trained at Shokoku-ji temple in Kyoto, he traveled to China in 1468-1469 and studied Ming Dynasty ink painting directly. His Landscape of the Four Seasons (c. 1486) is a 16-meter handscroll that adapts Chinese compositional principles to a more angular, forceful Japanese brushwork. Sesshu's Haboku Sansui (1495, Tokyo National Museum) uses the "splashed ink" technique, where ink is applied in broad, wet washes that blur and merge, creating landscape forms from suggestion rather than description. The painting was given to his student Soen as a farewell gift and is considered one of the masterpieces of the haboku style.
Sesson, a later Muromachi painter, worked in northeastern Japan, far from the cultural centers of Kyoto and Kamakura. His isolation gave his work a distinctive roughness and individuality. Landscape of the Four Seasons (c. 1550, Cleveland Museum of Art) shows a more expressive, less classical approach than Sesshu's, with bolder ink masses and more dramatic empty space.
Yujuso, a Zen monk whose dates are uncertain, is known for Reading in a Bamboo Pavilion (c. early 15th century, Metropolitan Museum of Art), a painting that exemplifies the early Japanese adaptation of Chinese ink painting. The composition uses empty space to suggest mist and distance, with the figure of the reader small against the vastness of the landscape.
Nishimoto is a contemporary Japanese sumi-e artist who has gained international recognition for his dynamic ink paintings of athletes and warriors. His work reimagines traditional sumi-e technique for contemporary subjects, demonstrating that the medium is not confined to bamboo and landscapes. Nishimoto performs live painting demonstrations where he produces large-scale sumi-e works in front of audiences, showing the speed and decisiveness that the medium demands.
Tanahashi, a Japanese-born calligrapher and painter who teaches in the United States, has developed a practice he calls "Brush Meditation" that combines sumi-e technique with mindfulness practice. His large-scale calligraphic works, produced in single strokes with brushes sometimes two feet wide, demonstrate the physical and meditative dimensions of the ink tradition. Tanahashi's teaching has brought sumi-e and calligraphy to universities and retreat centers worldwide.
The traditional curriculum begins with the Four Gentlemen, also called the Noble Four: bamboo, orchid, plum blossom, and chrysanthemum. Each plant teaches a specific brush technique. Bamboo teaches the straight stroke and the controlled flick for leaves. Orchid teaches the curved stroke and the tapering line. Plum blossom teaches the circular stroke and the branching structure. Chrysanthemum teaches the complex petal arrangement and the layered stroke.
Begin by grinding the ink. This is not a chore to be rushed through. The grinding process takes several minutes and serves as a meditation that prepares the mind for painting. Hold the ink stick at a slight angle and grind it in circular motions on the wet ink stone until the liquid reaches the desired density. Load the brush by dipping the tip into dark ink, then the middle into lighter ink, then the base into water. This produces a single stroke with five or six tonal gradations.
Paint with your whole arm, not just your wrist. The stroke should come from the shoulder. Once the brush touches the paper, commit to the stroke. Do not hesitate, do not correct, do not go back. Akemi Lucas, a sumi-e artist and calligraphy master who teaches in the UK, writes in Sumi-e: The Mindful Art of Japanese Ink Painting (Herbert Press, 2024) that "mastery of brush strokes requires balance between body and mind, with proper posture and relaxed fingers ensuring fluidity in execution." She also recommends ringa, the practice of copying masterworks to refine brushwork, ink control, and composition.
Sumi-e is closely related to calligraphy, which shares the same tools and the same emphasis on expressive brushwork. The concept of ma in sumi-e connects to negative space drawing and the broader Western concept of negative space. The ink wash technique is related to ink wash as a drawing medium. The Japanese tradition of ink painting parallels the Chinese tradition of Chinese landscape painting (shanshui).

The Tokyo National Museum holds the largest collection of Sesshu's work, including Landscape of the Four Seasons and Haboku Sansui. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a significant collection of Japanese ink painting in its Asian art galleries. The Cleveland Museum of Art holds Sesson's Landscape of the Four Seasons. The Freer Gallery and Sackler Gallery in Washington, DC, have extensive collections of Japanese and Chinese ink painting.
When you look at sumi-e in person, notice the paper. The white areas are not empty. They are composed. The artist chose to leave them blank, and that choice is as deliberate as every ink stroke.
