In April 1874, a group of thirty painters held an exhibition in a photographer's studio on Boulevard des Capucines in Paris. They called themselves the Societe Anonyme des Artistes Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs. There was no jury, no prizes, no hierarchy. One of the paintings on display showed a harbor at Le Havre with boats and cranes dissolving into mist and orange sunlight. Claude Monet had titled it Impression, soleil levant. The technical innovations were specific. The Impressionists used broken color, small strokes of unmixed pigment placed side by side, so that the colors blend in the viewer's eye rather than on the palette. This produces a luminosity that mixed paint cannot achieve, because the individual strokes of pure color retain their intensity. They painted en plein air, outdoors, working quickly to capture changing light before it shifted. Historical Context and Origins
Impressionism grew out of several converging developments in mid-19th-century France. The academic system, run by the Academie des Beaux-Arts, controlled access to the official Salon, the only major exhibition venue in Paris. The Salon's jury favored historical and mythological subjects painted with a smooth, invisible brushwork that hid the artist's process. Painters who did not conform to these standards were routinely rejected.
In 1863, the Salon rejected so many paintings that Emperor Napoleon III ordered a separate exhibition of the rejected works, the Salon des Refuses. Edouard Manet's Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe (1863, Musee d'Orsay), showing a nude woman picnicking with clothed men, was the scandal of the exhibition. Manet was not an Impressionist, but his insistence on painting contemporary subjects with direct, visible brushwork made him the movement's precursor and mentor figure.
The Impressionists were also influenced by the Barbizon School, a group of landscape painters who worked in the Forest of Fontainebleau in the 1830s and 1840s. Claude Monet (1840-1926)
Monet is the defining Impressionist. His Impression, soleil levant (1872, Musee Marmottan Monet) gave the movement its name. His serial paintings of the 1890s, the Haystacks (1890-1891), the Rouen Cathedral facade (1892-1894), and the Poplars (1891), show the same subject under different light conditions at different times of day. The Haystacks were exhibited at the Galerie Durand-Ruel in 1891 and sold successfully, proving that Impressionism had moved from scandal to market acceptance within twenty years. Berthe Morisot (1841-1895)
Morisot was the only woman to participate in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, and she exhibited in seven of the eight shows. Her paintings are among the most radical in the group. The Cradle (1872, Musee d'Orsay) shows her sister Edma gazing at her newborn daughter, the scene painted with loose, rapid brushwork that captures the intimacy of the moment. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)
Renoir's Impressionism was warmer and more figurative than Monet's. Bal du moulin de la Galette (1876, Musee d'Orsay) shows a Sunday afternoon dance in Montmartre, with dappled sunlight filtering through trees and falling on the faces and clothing of the crowd. Le Dejeuner des canotiers (1881, Phillips Collection) shows friends lunching on a terrace overlooking the Seine. Renoir's figures are always social, always enjoying themselves, and his brushwork is softer and more rounded than Monet's. In the 1880s, Renoir broke with Impressionism, traveling to Italy and adopting a more classical figure style that he called his "dry" period.
Edgar Degas (1834-1917)
Degas was the Impressionist who least fit the label. He did not paint outdoors, he disliked the term "Impressionist," and his subjects were indoor scenes: ballet rehearsals, racetracks, laundresses, and cafe concerts. The Dance Class (1874, Metropolitan Museum of Art) shows a ballet master correcting a dancer while other dancers scratch, yawn, and adjust their costumes in the background. Degas's compositions are influenced by photography and Japanese prints, with figures cut off at the edges of the frame and viewed from unusual angles. His pastels of bathers from the 1880s and 1890s use color with a freedom that moves toward Post-Impressionism.
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903)
Pissarro was the oldest member of the group and the only one who participated in all eight exhibitions. He was a mentor to both Monet and Cezanne and served as the group's organizer and peacemaker. His Hoarfrost at Ennery (1873, Musee d'Orsay) shows a rural road with a peasant walking through a frozen field, painted with broken brushwork that captures the cold, pale light of a winter morning. In the 1890s, Pissarro adopted divisionism for a period before returning to a looser style.
How to Spot Impressionism in a Painting
Look for visible brushwork first. If you can see individual brushstrokes, the painting is likely Impressionist or influenced by Impressionism. The academic painting that preceded it aimed for a surface so smooth that the artist's hand was invisible. The Impressionists made the brushstroke the subject.
Then look at the color. Impressionist paintings use bright, saturated colors, especially blues, greens, and the complementary contrasts of orange against blue and violet against yellow. Shadows are not black or brown but are painted in complementary colors: a shadow on a yellow wall might be painted in violet. This was a direct application of the color theories of Michel-Eugene Chevreul, published in 1839, which the Impressionists studied.
Finally, look at the subject. If the painting shows a modern scene, a cafe, a boulevard, a garden, a riverbank with people enjoying leisure, it is likely Impressionist. The movement was as much about what was painted as how it was painted.

Legacy and Influence
Impressionism's influence on subsequent art was total. Post-Impressionism was a direct response, with artists like Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Seurat taking the Impressionist commitment to color and modern subjects in different directions. The color theories that the Impressionists applied became the foundation for pointillism and divisionism. The principle that art should record direct visual experience became the starting point for almost every avant-garde movement of the 20th century.
The movement also changed the art market. The dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who backed the Impressionists when they were ridiculed, invented the modern gallery system: signing exclusive contracts with artists, staging solo exhibitions, and cultivating collectors. By the 1890s, Impressionist paintings were selling for prices that would have been unimaginable in 1874.
