In 1886, the eighth and final Impressionist exhibition opened in Paris. Among the paintings was a large canvas showing people standing on the bank of the Seine on a Sunday afternoon, rendered not in loose brushstrokes but in thousands of tiny dots of pure color. Georges Seurat called it A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. The painting took two years to complete. It looked nothing like what Monet or Renoir were painting. It was systematic, scientific, and almost frozen. Camille Pissarro, who had participated in every Impressionist exhibition, exhibited alongside Seurat with paintings in the same dotted style. The Impressionist movement, which had begun as a revolt against academic painting, had now produced its own revolt from within.
Post-Impressionism is the name given to the generation of painters who came after Impressionism and pushed beyond it in different directions. The term was coined by the British critic Roger Fry in 1910 for an exhibition at the Grafton Galleries in London titled "Manet and the Post-Impressionists." Fry used the term loosely to describe artists who had been influenced by Impressionism but were not satisfied with its emphasis on optical sensation alone. They wanted painting to carry more: more structure, more emotion, more meaning, more science.

What Is Post-Impressionism?
Post-Impressionism was never a movement in the way Impressionism was. There were no Post-Impressionist exhibitions, no manifestos, no group identity. The term is a retrospective label applied to several artists who worked in the 1880s and 1890s and who shared only one thing: they had all absorbed the lessons of Impressionism and decided those lessons were not enough.
The Impressionists had pursued the accurate recording of visual sensation. They painted what the eye sees at a given moment. The Post-Impressionists asked different questions. Cezanne asked how painting could construct permanent form from the fleeting impressions the Impressionists captured. Van Gogh asked how color could express emotion rather than describe appearances. Gauguin asked how painting could access spiritual and symbolic meanings that the visible world could not provide. Seurat asked how color could be systematized scientifically to produce predictable optical effects.
These four questions produced four completely different bodies of work, and the fact that they are grouped under one label is more an artifact of art history than a description of a shared style. What connects them is that they all took Impressionism as their starting point and pushed it somewhere the original Impressionists never intended to go.
Historical Context and Origins
The starting point for Post-Impressionism is usually placed at 1886, the year of the final Impressionist exhibition and the year Seurat's La Grande Jatte was shown. But the artists we now call Post-Impressionists had been working for years before that. Cezanne had exhibited with the Impressionists in 1874 and 1877, though his paintings were consistently the most criticized in the group. Van Gogh arrived in Paris in 1886 and spent two years studying Impressionist color before moving to Arles in 1888. Gauguin had been a stockbroker who collected Impressionist paintings before abandoning his career and family to paint full time.
The 1880s were a period of fragmentation in French art. The Impressionist group was dissolving. Monet was painting his serial landscapes. Renoir had traveled to Italy and was adopting a more classical style. Degas was producing pastels of bathers with increasing freedom. Into this fragmented landscape came a new generation of painters who were no longer satisfied with the Impressionist aesthetic and were searching for something more substantial.
The end of Post-Impressionism is usually placed around 1905, the year of the first Fauvist exhibition at the Salon d'Automne, where Matisse and his followers exhibited paintings in wild, unnatural colors that drew directly on Van Gogh and Gauguin. By that point, Cezanne had been painting in isolation in Aix-en-Provence for over a decade, and his work was about to be celebrated in a major retrospective at the 1907 Salon d'Automne, which would directly inspire Picasso and Braque's early Cubist experiments.
Key Artists and Pioneers
Paul Cezanne (1839-1906)
Cezanne is the artist who bridges Impressionism and 20th-century modernism. He participated in the first and third Impressionist exhibitions but was consistently the most mocked. By the 1880s, he had withdrawn to his native Aix-en-Provence and was painting landscapes, still lifes, and portraits with a method that was entirely his own. Cezanne's goal was to "make of Impressionism something solid and durable like the art of museums." He meant that the Impressionists had captured how light behaves but had lost the sense of permanent form that older painting possessed. Mont Sainte-Victoire (1902-1906, Philadelphia Museum of Art) shows the mountain near Aix rendered in patches of color that simultaneously describe the landscape's appearance and construct its underlying geometric structure. The Card Players (1890-1895, several versions, including one at the Musee d'Orsay and one sold to the Qatari royal family in 2011 for a reported $250 million) shows peasants playing cards with a gravity and monumentality that Cezanne achieved through color modulation rather than traditional drawing. Cezanne's statement that nature should be treated "in terms of the cylinder, the sphere, and the cone" became the foundation for Cubism. Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)
Van Gogh's career as a painter lasted only ten years, from 1880 to 1890, and his most productive period was even shorter: the two years between arriving in Arles in 1888 and his death in July 1890. In Arles, Van Gogh produced The Starry Night (1889, Museum of Modern Art), Sunflowers (1888, National Gallery, London), The Night Cafe (1888, Yale University Art Gallery), and dozens of landscapes and portraits in a style that used Impressionist color but pushed it to an emotional intensity the Impressionists never approached. Van Gogh used complementary color contrasts not to describe what he saw but to express what he felt. A 2026 study published in Surface Topography: Metrology and Properties used fractal dimension analysis of Van Gogh's paint surface to authenticate his works, finding that his brushwork has a measurable morphological signature that distinguishes genuine works from forgeries. Paul Gauguin (1849-1903)
Gauguin's path to Post-Impressionism was extreme. He was a successful stockbroker in Paris who collected Impressionist paintings and painted on weekends. After the French stock market crash in 1882, he abandoned his career, left his wife and five children, and devoted himself to painting. He worked briefly with Pissarro and Cezanne before seeking what he called "primitive" art and life, first in Brittany and then in Tahiti, where he arrived in 1891. Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (1897, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) is his masterpiece, a vast canvas showing figures in a Tahitian landscape arranged from birth to death. Gauguin used flat areas of bold, unnatural color surrounded by heavy outlines, a style he called "Cloisonnism" after the stained-glass technique. Georges Seurat (1859-1891)
Seurat took the Impressionist interest in color theory and turned it into a system. He studied the optical theories of Michel-Eugene Chevreul and the color wheel of Charles Blanc, and he developed pointillism (also called divisionism): painting with small dots of pure color that the eye blends optically at a viewing distance. A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884-1886, Art Institute of Chicago) is the movement's defining work. The painting shows middle-class Parisians relaxing on a riverbank, but the figures are rigid and statue-like, and the surface is covered in millions of tiny dots. Seurat died at 31, but his systematic approach to color influenced Pissarro in the 1880s and opened the door to the scientific color theories that would underpin 20th-century abstraction. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901)
Toulouse-Lautrec is sometimes grouped with the Post-Impressionists, though his work is closer to Degas in subject matter. He painted the nightlife of Montmartre, the cafes, dance halls, and brothels of Paris's entertainment district. At the Moulin Rouge (1892-1895, Art Institute of Chicago) shows the artist himself among a group of friends and performers, with a woman's face painted an unnatural green in the background. Toulouse-Lautrec's use of flat color, bold outlines, and unusual cropping was influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and influenced the development of graphic design and poster art.
How to Spot Post-Impressionism in a Painting
Post-Impressionism is harder to spot than Impressionism because it is not a single style. But there are clues. If a painting from the 1880s or 1890s uses the bright colors and visible brushwork of Impressionism but does something that Impressionism never does, it is probably Post-Impressionist.
Look for structure. Cezanne's paintings have a sense of geometric construction that Impressionist paintings lack. His forms are built from patches of color that describe both the surface appearance and the underlying shape. Look for emotional color. Van Gogh's colors are not descriptive but expressive. The yellow of a sunflower in a Van Gogh painting is not the yellow of any real sunflower. It is the yellow of how the sunflower made him feel. Look for flatness. Gauguin and his followers used flat areas of color with heavy outlines, rejecting the Impressionist emphasis on atmospheric depth. Look for dots. Seurat's pointillist technique is unmistakable: thousands of tiny, regular dots of pure color covering the entire surface.
At the Musee d'Orsay, the Post-Impressionist galleries are on the same floor as the Impressionist rooms, and the contrast is instructive. You can walk from Monet's Water Lilies to Cezanne's The Card Players to Van Gogh's Starry Night over the Rhone (1888) in five minutes and see how each artist took the Impressionist inheritance in a completely different direction.
Legacy and Influence
Post-Impressionism is the movement that made modern art possible. Cezanne's geometric reduction of form directly inspired Cubism. Van Gogh's expressive color directly inspired Fauvism and Expressionism. Gauguin's flat color and symbolic subjects influenced Symbolism and the Nabis group. Seurat's systematic color theory influenced abstract painting and the scientific study of color perception. A 2026 article in The Art Newspaper reported new research from the Dutch journal Oud Holland revealing Van Gogh's deep engagement with 17th-century Dutch masters, particularly Vermeer's use of blue and yellow, which Van Gogh described in a letter from Arles as "the combination of celestial blues and yellows in paintings by Vermeer of Delft."
