Walk through the conservation lab at the Museo del Prado in Madrid and you will see paintings turned around, their backs facing the viewer. The conservators are examining the support. On one table, a 16th-century Spanish altarpiece is mounted on oak panels joined with animal glue, the wood grain visible and the tool marks from the original panel maker still present. On another, a 17th-century Venetian canvas is stretched on a stretcher with expandable corners, the fabric darkened with age. What you realize, looking at these backs, is that the support is the foundation of everything. If the support fails, the painting fails. The most beautiful brushwork in the world is worthless if the wood panel splits or the canvas rots.
In visual arts, the support is the solid surface on which the work is painted or drawn. It is technically distinct from the ground, which is the preparatory layer applied on top of the support. Common supports include canvas, wood panel, paper, copper, and plaster (for fresco). The support is what physically holds the painting, and its properties, whether rigid or flexible, smooth or textured, absorbent or non-absorbent, affect every aspect of how the painting is made and how it ages.
This entry covers the history of painting supports, the different types and their properties, how supports are prepared, and why the choice of support matters for both the artist and the conservator.
A support is what physically holds the painting, or paint film. It is the bottom layer of a stack that typically includes the support, a sizing layer, a ground layer, and the paint layers themselves. The support can be rigid, like a wood panel, or flexible, like canvas. Each type presents different opportunities and challenges.
An auxiliary support is the structure that holds the support. Stretcher bars, for example, are the auxiliary support for canvas. The canvas is the support, and the stretcher bars hold it taut. For a panel painting, the panel itself is both support and auxiliary support, though large panels may have additional wooden battens or frames on the back to prevent warping.
The choice of support affects the painting in practical ways. A rigid support like wood panel provides a smooth, stable surface that is ideal for fine detail and tempera painting. A flexible support like canvas is lighter, can be rolled for transport, and can be produced in much larger sizes. But canvas is more vulnerable to tearing, sagging, and environmental fluctuations. The University of Delaware Art Conservation program documents these material differences in detail.
Wood was the original choice of support for easel painting in the West. Wooden statues were painted in the Old Kingdom of Egypt during the Fourth Dynasty (2600-2500 BC), and by the Sixth Dynasty, easel painting had started. The oldest known use of fabric (linen) as a painting support dates to Dynasty XII in Egypt (around 2000 BC), but wood remained the dominant support for fine painting in Europe until the 16th century.
Different wood varieties were used in different regions. Italian painters preferred poplar, which was lightweight and readily available. Northern European painters used oak, which is harder and more durable. The Prado's conservation research notes that guild restrictions often stipulated how long a panel was to be aged before use, sometimes as long as ten years, to ensure the wood had lost its residual moisture and would not warp.
Small panels could be constructed from a single piece of wood. Larger panels were made from multiple planks glued together with animal glue or casein and lime adhesive. Wooden battens, cleats, and other mechanical devices were used to hold the planks together and reduce warping. The frames of early panel paintings were generally engaged, meaning the panels were glued into the frames before subsequent sizing and ground layers were applied. Bare wood can sometimes be seen around the edges of these panels if they have been removed from their engaged frames.
Wooden supports are prone to several types of degradation. Insect infestation, humidity fluctuations causing warping and cracking, and structural damage are all common. In the past, restorers attempted to combat warping by thinning the original panel and attaching a lattice-like structure called a "cradle" to the back. These cradles, composed of vertical and horizontal wooden bars, were intended to keep the panel flat. In practice, as soon as the panel warped slightly, the horizontal battens became locked, causing more stress than they relieved. Modern conservators avoid cradling and instead work to preserve the original support material.
Canvas replaced wood panel as the dominant painting support in Europe during the 16th century. The shift happened first in Venice, where high humidity caused wooden panels to swell, warp, and crack. Canvas, by contrast, is flexible and tolerates humidity changes well. Venice was also a center of sailcloth production, and the same hemp sailcloth that equipped the Venetian fleet was available to painters. Mantegna, Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese led the transition.
The word "canvas" comes from the Latin "cannabis," meaning hemp, because the earliest canvas was woven from hemp fibers. Modern canvas is made from cotton, linen, or sometimes polyester. Canvas could be produced in much larger sizes than panel, and its lighter weight allowed for the creation of very large paintings that could be moved and even rolled for transport. Tintoretto's large Venetian canvases sometimes required stitching together multiple pieces of narrower fabric, and seams are visible on close inspection of his largest works.
Canvas took longer to replace panel in Northern Europe. The change took about a century longer than in Italy, and panel paintings remained common in the Netherlands through the 17th century. Rembrandt used both supports. By the 18th century, canvas had become the standard support for easel painting across Europe. For a detailed history of canvas as a support, see our entry on canvas.
Copper became inexpensive enough in sheet form around the 16th century to be used as a painting support, with written records of its use starting in the 17th century. Copper panels provided an extremely smooth surface that was ideal for small, highly detailed paintings. El Greco and Brueghel the Elder both painted on copper.
Ivory was used for painting since ancient Greece. Thin slices of ivory returned as a support for portrait miniatures in the 18th century, prized for their suitability for painting with transparent watercolors and their ability to imitate pale skin tones.
Paper has been used as a support for drawings, watercolors, and gouache since its introduction to Europe from the Islamic world. For oil painting, paper is generally mounted on board for stability. See our entries on watercolor paper and canvas panels for specific types of supports.
For fresco, the support is the wall itself, or more precisely, the layer of plaster applied to the wall. The plaster serves as both support and ground, making fresco a unique case where the support and the preparatory layer are the same material. See our entry on fresco for details.
Before painting can begin, the support must be prepared. Raw wood panel must be scraped smooth. Raw canvas must be stretched on a stretcher and then sized to seal the fibers and prevent the ground or paint from penetrating. The size layer is followed by a ground layer, which provides a smooth, appropriately absorbent surface for painting.
The preparation process is critical to the longevity of the painting. If the support is not properly sized, oil paint can penetrate to the canvas fibers and cause them to rot. If the ground is too absorbent, it can suck the binder out of the paint, leaving pigment underbound and prone to flaking. If the ground is too rigid for a flexible support, it will crack as the canvas flexes. The Museo del Prado's research on canvas preparation in 16th-century Spain documents how preparation techniques evolved as canvas replaced panel.
For a detailed explanation of the preparation layers applied to the support, see our entries on ground and gesso.
Today, most painters work on commercially prepared stretched canvas or canvas panels. These come pre-primed with acrylic gesso and are ready to paint on. However, many professional painters still prepare their own supports, particularly for oil painting, where the choice of ground (oil primer versus acrylic gesso) affects the painting's surface quality and long-term stability.
Engineered wood products like MDF (medium-density fiberboard) and hardboard (Masonite) are modern alternatives to solid wood panels. They are homogenous, lacking the grain that causes solid wood to warp, and are available in large, flat sheets. Many contemporary painters who want the smooth surface of a panel without the instability of solid wood use hardboard or MDF. Polyester canvas, a synthetic alternative to natural fiber canvas, is gaining acceptance among painters who prioritize archival stability, as it is completely unaffected by humidity, mold, and pests.
The support is the base layer of a painting. Above it sits the ground, the preparatory layer that creates a paint-ready surface. The most common flexible support is canvas, and the most common ground is gesso. For the tool that holds canvas while you paint, see our entry on the easel. For a deeper understanding of how surface preparation affects painting, read our post on oil painting techniques.
You can see the difference between supports in any major museum. The National Gallery in London has Italian Renaissance panel paintings on poplar and Dutch Golden Age paintings on oak panel and canvas, often in adjacent rooms. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has Rembrandt's canvases alongside panels by Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden. The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna has copper paintings by Brueghel that show the extraordinary smoothness that metal supports allow.
