Draw a chair. If you are like most people, you start by drawing the legs, the seat, the back. You draw the chair itself. Now try a different approach: draw the shapes between the legs, the triangle between the seat and the back, the irregular patch of floor visible through the rungs. Draw everything that is not the chair. When you finish, the chair will be there on the page, more accurate than if you had drawn it directly. This is negative space drawing, and it works because it bypasses the symbols your brain has stored for familiar objects.
Negative space drawing is the practice of drawing the shapes around and between a subject rather than the subject itself. The subject, called positive space, emerges as a byproduct of the negative shapes around it. The technique is both a drawing method and a compositional philosophy. As a method, it produces more accurate drawings by forcing the artist to see abstract shapes instead of named objects. As a philosophy, it treats empty space as an active compositional element with its own shape, weight, and function.

Every image contains two kinds of space. Positive space is the area occupied by the subject. Negative space is everything else: the area around, between, and within the subject. In most drawings, the artist focuses on positive space and treats negative space as leftover background. In negative space drawing, the artist reverses this priority and draws the negative shapes first.
The reason this works is cognitive. When you draw a hand, your brain activates its stored symbol for "hand," which is almost certainly wrong. It is a simplified, cartoonish version that overrides what you actually see. But your brain has no stored symbol for "the weird triangular gap between someone's thumb and index finger." When you draw that gap, you draw what is actually in front of you, not what your brain thinks should be there. This is the core insight of Betty Edwards's Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (1979), which made negative space drawing one of its five foundational skills and remains one of the most widely used drawing instruction books in the world, translated into more than 17 languages.
A 2024 composition guide from Grid Maker Pro traced the quantitative differences between Eastern and Western approaches to negative space. East Asian ink paintings typically use 50 percent or more negative space. Western Baroque painting uses 5 to 15 percent. Modernist editorial design uses 30 to 60 percent. The concept of negative space has two distinct lineages. The Eastern tradition is older and more developed. The Western tradition is younger and borrowed heavily from the East.
In China, the earliest documented theorization of negative space comes from Xie He's Six Principles of Painting, compiled around 550 CE. One of these principles, "spirit resonance" or "rhythmic vitality" (qiyun shengdong), depends on negative space. The breathable area that lets qi circulate through a composition is not empty. It is the condition that makes the painting work. By the Song dynasty (960-1279 CE), leaving large blank areas in landscape painting was canonical. A hanging scroll by Ma Yuan or Xia Gui might be two-thirds empty paper.
The Japanese concept of ma (間) covers the same ground. Ma originally referred to the interval between two things: the pause between musical notes, the silence between spoken phrases, the blank area on a painted scroll. Ma is not absence. It is charged space. The term entered Western design discourse through Arata Isozaki's 1978 exhibition MA: Space-Time in Japan at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York, which introduced the concept to a generation of Western architects and designers.
Western painting was slower to theorize negative space. The Renaissance figure tradition, codified by Vasari and Alberti, treated space as ground rather than figure. Space was where perspective happened, not a compositional element in its own right. The term "negative space" does not appear in English art instruction until the early 20th century, parallel to the rise of Gestalt psychology. The Danish psychologist Edgar Rubin published his figure-ground distinction in Synsoplevede Figurer (1915), the source of the famous Rubin vase illusion. Rudolf Arnheim's Art and Visual Perception (1954, University of California Press) brought the figure-ground vocabulary into formal art education.
The Western embrace of negative space began with Whistler's late nocturnes in the 1870s and accelerated through Japonisme in the 1880s and 1890s, when Western artists encountered Japanese woodblock prints and imported their spatial logic. Degas, Cassatt, and Caillebotte all show Japanese-influenced negative space treatment. The English term "negative space" enters art-school usage by the mid-1920s.
Matisse's late paper cut-outs make negative and positive space equal partners. In the Jazz series (1947) and works like The Snail (1953, Tate), the white shapes around the cut-paper figures function as figures themselves. There is no background in a Matisse cut-out. Every area, whether it is the leaf or the space beside the leaf, carries the same visual weight. The MoMA catalogue Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs (2014) discusses the technique in detail, noting that what reads as a blue nude is geometrically the negative space around white paper cuttings that Matisse never glued down.
Escher built his career on figure-ground reversal, the formal name for what happens when positive and negative shapes trade places. In Sky and Water I (1938), birds at the top of the image dissolve into fish at the bottom, with the negative space of one becoming the positive space of the other. His tessellations are the most systematic exploration of negative space in art history. Every shape is simultaneously figure and ground.
Moore called 1932 "the year of the hole." His reclining figures are defined as much by what is missing as by what is present. The cavities, tunnels, and openings in his bronze forms create negative shapes that shift as you walk around the sculpture. Moore's voids feel organic and bodily, as though the sculpture has been hollowed out from the inside.
Hepworth created her first pierced sculpture in 1931 and made negative space central to her work from that point forward. Her sculptures became increasingly open, hollowed out, and perforated so that the interior void was as important as the solid material around it. She painted the concave interiors of her forms and stretched strings across the openings, turning negative space into a visible, active element. According to Britannica, Hepworth concentrated on the counterplay between mass and space throughout her mature career.
Edwards is the person who brought negative space drawing into mainstream art education. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (1979) identified five component skills of drawing, with negative space as the second, right after the perception of edges. Her method teaches students to draw the spaces around objects rather than the objects themselves, bypassing the symbolic processing that produces amateurish drawings. The book has sold over 2.5 million copies and remains standard reading in art education programs worldwide.
Set up a simple still life: a chair, a plant, or a group of bottles. Instead of drawing the objects, draw the shapes between them. Start with the shape between two bottles. Then the shape between a bottle and the edge of the table. Then the shape between the table edge and the edge of your paper. Work outward until the entire composition is filled with negative shapes. The objects themselves will appear as the white paper left between the negative shapes.
Another exercise is to draw a complex object, like a bicycle or a chair, by drawing only the spaces between its parts. Do not draw a single spoke or leg. Draw every triangle, rectangle, and irregular polygon formed by the gaps in the structure. This exercise is difficult because your brain constantly tries to pull you back to drawing the object. Resist it. Keep your eyes on the spaces.
A practical application from representational drawing instruction is to use negative space as a checking tool. If the negative shape on your page does not match the negative shape on the model, the subject's outline is wrong even if it looks plausible in isolation. This comparison method catches proportion errors that staring at the positive shapes alone never will.
Negative space drawing connects to several other concepts in the glossary. Negative space as a compositional element is the broader concept that this technique teaches. Composition depends on the balance between positive and negative space. Gesture drawing and contour drawing are complementary practices that focus on movement and edges respectively. The Japanese concept of ma connects to sumi-e, where the white paper is an active compositional element.

The best place to study negative space in sculpture is the Henry Moore Foundation in Hertfordshire, where Moore's reclining figures are displayed in the landscape he designed for them. Walk around each sculpture and watch how the voids change shape as you move.
