Ink Wash: Tonal Painting With Diluted Ink

A single stroke of a brush loaded with dark ink lands on absorbent paper. The ink spreads into the fibers, bleeding outward in a halo of gray. The painter lifts the brush and the stroke is done. It cannot be changed, erased, painted over, or undone. This is the fundamental condition of ink wash painting: total commitment to every mark. The medium rewards decades of practice and punishes hesitation with a permanence that oil and acrylic painters never face. A wrong stroke in oil can be scraped off and repainted. A wrong stroke in ink wash is there forever, embedded in the paper fibers, part of the finished work whether the painter wants it or not.

Ink wash is a painting technique that uses ink, traditionally carbon-based stick ink ground with water on a stone, diluted to varying concentrations with water to produce tonal gradations from deep black to pale gray. The ink is applied with a soft brush to absorbent paper or silk. The technique is monochrome by tradition, relying on tonal variation rather than color to create form, depth, and atmosphere. What Is Ink Wash and How Does It Work?

History and Origins
