Origami: Paper Folding as Art From Japanese Ceremony to Computational Design

A single uncut square of paper, folded into a dragon with horns, scales, claws, and a twisting tail that extends in a continuous spiral. Satoshi Kamiya's Ryujin 3.5 took over 30 hours to fold and requires a sheet of paper at least 50 centimeters square. The crease pattern, the map of every mountain and valley fold that guides the final form, contains thousands of individual folds. This is not the origami most people know. The crane folded from a 15-centimeter square in a few minutes is origami too, but the distance between that crane and Kamiya's dragon is the distance between a folk craft and an art form that now intersects with mathematics, engineering, and artificial intelligence.

Origami is the practice of creating form by folding paper alone, without cutting or gluing. The word combines the Japanese ori (to fold) and kami (paper). While the term is Japanese, the practice of paper folding has a multinational history, with independent traditions in Europe and East Asia that converged in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today origami functions as an internationally recognized art form, a mathematical discipline, and a design methodology with applications in aerospace engineering, architecture, and medicine.

What Is Origami?

Origins and History

Ceremonial and Folk Origins

Paper was invented in China around 105 CE, and paper folding likely began shortly after. The earliest documented paper folding comes from Japan, where it was used in Shinto ceremonies by the Heian period (794-1185). Noshi, folded paper attachments attached to gifts, and shide, zigzag-folded paper streamers used in Shinto shrines, are among the oldest ceremonial folding practices. Koshiro Hatori, in his essay "History of Paperfolding in the East and West Before Interfusion," explicitly deconstructs the idea of origami as ancient. European Folding Traditions

Folding traditions also developed independently in Europe. The baptismal certificates of 17th-century Germany and Poland were folded into elaborate double blintz forms. Friedrich Frobel, the founder of kindergarten, incorporated paper folding into his educational system in the mid-19th century, and Frobelian folding spread through Europe and America as part of early childhood education. These European traditions were entirely separate from Japanese folding until the opening of Japan in the 1850s, when the two strands began to fuse.

Akira Yoshizawa and the Transformation of Origami (1950s-2000s)

If there is a single turning point in origami's history, it is the emergence of Akira Yoshizawa (1911-2005). Before the mid-20th century, origami was a folk practice with no systematic means of documentation or transmission. Yoshizawa changed that. He developed and refined a system of diagrammatic notation for origami instructions, using dashed lines for valley folds, dot-dash lines for mountain folds, and arrows to indicate folding directions. In the 1960s, American origami advocate Samuel Randlett further organized and standardized this system. In the United States, physicist and origami artist Robert J. Lang developed TreeMaker, software that uses mathematical algorithms to generate fold patterns for complex subjects. Akira Yoshizawa (1911-2005)

Yoshizawa produced over 50,000 models in his lifetime, though only a few hundred were diagrammed. His work ranged from animals and insects to abstract sculptures, all characterized by a quality he called "alive" folding, where the paper was shaped and curved after the structural folds were complete, giving the model a sense of breath and movement. Robert J. Lang (b. 1961)

Lang is a physicist who left his career in laser engineering to pursue origami full-time. Lang's models, including his Black Forest Cuckoo Clock (1987, folded from a single sheet with no cuts) and his insect series, demonstrate that computational design can produce models of extraordinary complexity. Kamiya is one of the leading figures of complex origami. His Ryujin 3.5, a multi-axial dragon with scales, horns, claws, and a serpentine body, is considered one of the most complex single-sheet origami models ever designed. The crease pattern requires a sheet of at least 50 centimeters and over 30 hours of folding time. Erik and Martin Demaine

Wet-Folding and Contemporary Materials

Present-day origami generally avoids the "origami paper" sold in small, pre-cut square packs. This type of paper, called kami by folders, is cheaply mass-produced from wood pulp with short fibers and low strength. It has uses for practice and education but is inadequate for advanced techniques. Modern folders create exhibition-worthy models using wet-folding, which requires paper with internal sizing, adhesive that binds the paper fibers together. Sizing can also be added to the surface of an existing sheet, expanding the range of foldable materials to softer papers with different textures and thicknesses.

Specialized origami papermakers such as Origamido Studio and The Paper Circle produce papers designed specifically for complex folding: thin, strong, and highly compressible. Contemporary folders have also started using glue in their models, not to adhere multiple sheets together, but to preserve a model's shaping against heat and humidity. This represents a sharp turn away from the ephemeral nature of napkin folds and kindergarten toys toward archival, long-lasting works.

Origami in Engineering and Science

When origami met contemporary science and engineering, the result was not a nostalgic revival of traditional craft. It was a practical solution to problems that other design approaches had not resolved. Kirigami-inspired and origami-inspired structures have been used in solar panel arrays for spacecraft, where the folding pattern allows a large surface to be packed into a small payload and deployed in space. The same principles appear in stent design, where folded structures expand inside blood vessels, and in robotics, where origami-inspired actuators produce movement through controlled folding.
