Negative Space: The Space Around and Between Subjects in Art

Look at Katsushika Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa (c. 1831). The wave dominates the left side of the image, its curling fingers of water reaching toward three small boats. Mount Fuji sits on the right, tiny and still. Between the wave and Fuji is sky. That sky is not empty. It is shaped. The curve of the wave creates a scalloped edge against the pale background, and the negative space between the wave and the mountain has a specific, deliberate form. Remove that space and the composition collapses. The wave would touch Fuji, the tension would vanish, and the painting would become a flat record of two objects rather than a dynamic relationship between them. This is negative space, and it is not leftover background. It is one of the most powerful compositional tools an artist has.

Negative space is the area around, between, and within the subjects of an artwork. The subjects themselves, the objects or figures that the artwork depicts, occupy positive space. Everything else is negative space. In most paintings, the artist focuses on positive space and treats negative space as background. But in the hands of a skilled artist, negative space becomes an active compositional element with its own shape, weight, and function. It can define the subject, create tension, produce balance, and carry meaning.

What Is Negative Space and Why Does It Matter?

Every image contains two kinds of space. Positive space is the area occupied by the subject. Negative space is everything else. In a portrait, the figure is positive space and the background is negative space. In a landscape, the mountains, trees, and buildings are positive space and the sky, water, and ground between them are negative space. The distinction is not always clear-cut. In some paintings, negative space becomes so active that it functions as positive space, and the two trade places.

Negative space matters because it shapes the viewer's perception of the subject. The silhouette of a figure is defined as much by the negative space around it as by the positive form of the figure itself. A figure surrounded by tight, cramped negative space feels trapped. The same figure surrounded by expansive negative space feels free. The shape of the negative space between two figures tells you about their relationship: close negative space suggests intimacy or conflict, open negative space suggests distance or independence.

The Gestalt psychologist Edgar Rubin formalized the relationship between positive and negative space in his figure-ground distinction, published in Synsoplevede Figurer (1915). Rubin demonstrated that the visual system automatically separates images into figure (positive space) and ground (negative space), and that this separation is a fundamental perceptual process. The famous Rubin vase illusion, which shows either a vase or two faces in profile depending on which part you see as figure and which as ground, demonstrates that figure and ground can reverse. Rudolf Arnheim's Art and Visual Perception (1954) brought the figure-ground vocabulary into formal art education.

A 2025 study published in the Journal of Visual Arts Research analyzed the interaction of positive and negative space in the poster designs of Noma Bar, using Gestalt figure-ground principles. The study found that in Bar's posters, positive and negative space have a "two-way function": the negative space around the positive figure becomes a new figure itself, creating a close and inseparable connection between the two. Origins and History

The Eastern Tradition

The Eastern tradition of negative space is older and more developed than the Western. In China, the earliest documented theorization comes from Xie He's Six Principles of Painting, compiled around 550 CE. One of these principles, "spirit resonance" or "rhythmic vitality" (qiyun shengdong), depends on negative space. The breathable area that lets qi circulate through a composition is not empty. It is the condition that makes the painting work. By the Song dynasty (960-1279 CE), leaving large blank areas in landscape painting was canonical. A hanging scroll by Ma Yuan or Xia Gui might be two-thirds empty paper.

The Japanese concept of ma (間) covers the same ground. Ma refers to the interval between two things: the pause between musical notes, the silence between spoken phrases, the blank area on a painted scroll. Ma is not absence. It is charged space. The term entered Western design discourse through Arata Isozaki's 1978 exhibition MA: Space-Time in Japan at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York.

A 2025 study published in Research on Literary and Art Development examined the application of blank space (liubai) techniques in Chinese landscape painting, identifying three forms: compositional negative space, borrowed object negative space, and virtual-real negative space. The study argued that these forms highlight the painting's theme, showcase spatial composition, and create artistic atmosphere. The study is available at WSP Publishing.

A 2025 study published in the Journal of Posthumanism analyzed the semiotics of negative space in Huang Binhong's flower-and-bird paintings from the 1940s and 1950s. Using multispectral imaging, XRF analysis, and infrared photography, the study provided empirical evidence that Huang's voids were "carefully reserved rather than accidentally omitted." The study framed liubai as a "generative void" that structures perception and invites contemplation, functioning as temporal marker, emotional register, and philosophical proposition. The Western Tradition

Western painting was slower to theorize negative space. The Renaissance figure tradition, codified by Vasari and Alberti, treated space as ground rather than figure. Space was where perspective happened, not a compositional element in its own right. The term "negative space" does not appear in English art instruction until the early 20th century, parallel to the rise of Gestalt psychology.

The Western embrace of negative space began with Whistler's late nocturnes in the 1870s and accelerated through Japonisme in the 1880s and 1890s, when Western artists encountered Japanese woodblock prints and imported their spatial logic. A 2024 composition guide from Grid Maker Pro traced the quantitative differences between Eastern and Western approaches to negative space. East Asian ink paintings typically use 50 percent or more negative space. Western Baroque painting uses 5 to 15 percent. Modernist editorial design uses 30 to 60 percent. Key Artists and Their Use of Negative Space

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)

The Great Wave off Kanagawa (c. 1831) is a masterclass in negative space. The wave fills the left side of the composition, while Mount Fuji sits small and isolated on the right. The negative space between them, the pale sky, creates the tension. It gives the wave room to curl and gives Fuji room to stand. Without that space, the painting would be a jumble of forms. Henri Matisse (1869-1954)

Matisse's late paper cut-outs make negative and positive space equal partners. In the Jazz series (1947) and works like The Snail (1953, Tate), the white shapes around the cut-paper figures function as figures themselves. There is no background in a Matisse cut-out. Every area, whether it is the leaf or the space beside the leaf, carries the same visual weight. The MoMA catalogue Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs (2014) discusses the technique in detail, noting that what reads as a blue nude is geometrically the negative space around white paper cuttings that Matisse never glued down.

M.C. Escher (1898-1972)

Escher built his career on figure-ground reversal, the formal name for what happens when positive and negative shapes trade places. In Sky and Water I (1938), birds at the top of the image dissolve into fish at the bottom, with the negative space of one becoming the positive space of the other. His tessellations are the most systematic exploration of negative space in art history. Every shape is simultaneously figure and ground.

Henry Moore (1898-1986)

Moore called 1932 "the year of the hole." His reclining figures are defined as much by what is missing as by what is present. The cavities, tunnels, and openings in his bronze forms create negative shapes that shift as you walk around the sculpture. Moore's voids feel organic and bodily, as though the sculpture has been hollowed out from the inside.

Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975)

Hepworth created her first pierced sculpture in 1931 and made negative space central to her work from that point forward. Her sculptures became increasingly open, hollowed out, and perforated so that the interior void was as important as the solid material around it. She painted the concave interiors of her forms and stretched strings across the openings, turning negative space into a visible, active element.

Mark Rothko (1903-1970)

Rothko's color field paintings use negative space as the primary subject. In No. 61 (Rust and Blue) (1953), the large areas of color float on a colored ground, and the space between the rectangles is as carefully calibrated as the rectangles themselves. A 2024 eye-tracking study published in Symmetry found that the proportion between Rothko's colored areas affected both eye dwell time and explicit judgments of harmony, confirming that the negative space in his paintings is not passive but actively shapes perception. Negative Space and Composition

Negative space is inseparable from composition. The arrangement of positive elements determines the shape of the negative space, and the shape of the negative space determines how the positive elements read. A composition that ignores negative space will feel cluttered and unstructured, no matter how well the individual elements are rendered.

The relationship between negative space and balance is particularly important. In asymmetrical balance, negative space can serve as a counterweight to a large positive element. Hokusai's Great Wave is the classic example: the massive wave on the left is balanced by the negative space on the right, which gives Mount Fuji enough visual weight to hold the composition. Without that space, the painting would tip to the left.

A 2024 thesis from the University of Oulu examined the signification of negative space in social reality, finding that negative space "sets the visual free of its predetermined conclusions, making the viewer's connection with the image more personal and varied." The thesis argued that negative space plays a significant role in sense-making and future-making, and that the viewer's experience of negative space varies significantly based on individual factors. How to See Negative Space in a Painting

To see negative space, stop looking at the subject. Instead, look at the shapes around the subject. What is the shape of the sky between the branches of a tree? What is the shape of the wall between two figures? What is the shape of the ground between a chair and a table? These shapes are the negative space, and they are as deliberately composed as the positive elements.

Squint at the painting. Squinting reduces detail and makes it easier to see the overall pattern of dark and light, positive and negative. A well-composed painting will have a balance of positive and negative space that creates a satisfying pattern even when you cannot identify the subjects. If the painting feels cluttered, it probably has too little negative space. If it feels empty, it may have too much, or the negative space may not be shaped actively enough.

Look for figure-ground reversal. In some paintings, the negative space is so strongly shaped that it reads as a subject itself. Escher's tessellations are the extreme case, but many representational paintings contain moments where the negative space asserts itself. The dark background of a Caravaggio painting, for example, is not empty. It is a dense, active negative space that presses against the lit figures and gives them their dramatic isolation.
