Gold Leaf (Gilding): Applying Thin Gold Sheets as Surface or Background

Stand in front of a fourteenth-century Sienese altarpiece and the first thing you notice is not the figures. It is the gold. The background is not painted gold. It is actual gold, hammered into sheets thinner than a human hair and laid onto the panel with such precision that the surface looks like solid metal. When candlelight hit these panels in a dark church, the gold blazed. The figures of saints and the Madonna floated in a field of divine light. That was the point. Gold leaf was not decoration. It was theology made visible.

Gold leaf, or gilding, is the technique of applying extremely thin sheets of gold to a surface, either as a background, a highlight, or a complete covering. The gold is hammered or rolled into leaves only a few microns thick, then adhered to the prepared surface using various binding methods. Gilding has been used in painting, sculpture, architecture, manuscript illumination, and decorative arts for over 4,000 years. In Western art, it reached its peak during the medieval and early Renaissance periods, when gold-leaf backgrounds were standard in Italian panel painting and Byzantine iconography.

What Is Gold Leaf and How Does Gilding Work?

Gold is the most malleable metal known. It can be hammered into sheets so thin that they are translucent when held up to light. A single gram of gold can be beaten into a sheet of about one square meter. Traditional gold leaf for gilding is between 0.1 and 0.2 micrometers thick, though historical leaf was somewhat thicker, around 10 to 15 microns according to Cennino Cennini's fifteenth-century treatise Il libro dell'arte.

Two primary techniques were used to apply gold leaf to paintings. The first is water gilding, in which the leaf is laid onto a water-based adhesive layer called bole. Bole is a fine clay, typically red or yellow, mixed with animal glue or egg white and applied over a gesso ground. The gold leaf is placed on the wetted bole surface and, once dry, burnished with an agate stone tool to produce a smooth, mirror-like finish. Water gilding produces the most brilliant surface and was used for backgrounds and halos in panel paintings.

The second technique is mordant gilding, in which the leaf is laid over an oil-based adhesive, usually linseed oil mixed with drying pigments. Mordant gilding is used for smaller details: halos, rays of light, brocade patterns, and decorative borders. It cannot be burnished to the same mirror finish as water gilding, but it is more suitable for intricate shapes and for applying gold over painted areas.

A 2019 study published in npj Heritage Science used scanning macro X-ray fluorescence to directly visualize the size, shape, and application techniques of gold leaf in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Italian panel paintings. The research, conducted on thirteen paintings attributed to artists working in Florence and Siena, found that the size of gold leaf squares corresponded to the 1403 Florentine guild statutes, which specified that fine gold (oro fine) should be manufactured to squares with side lengths of about 7 cm. The study also measured leaf overlaps, which varied by artist and could indicate the skill of the gilder. Origins and History

Gilding is ancient. The Egyptians were gilding wood and metal as early as 2000 BCE. Greek and Roman sculptors used gold leaf on bronze and marble statues. In the medieval period, gilding became central to Western religious art. Byzantine icons used gold leaf for backgrounds and halos, establishing a convention that spread throughout the Orthodox Christian world and into Italy.

In thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Italy, gold-leaf backgrounds became the standard for panel paintings. The gold was supplied by gold beaters, craftsmen who hammered gold into leaf, and was subject to strict guild regulations. In Florence, painters and gold beaters both belonged to the Guild of Doctors and Apothecaries (Arte dei Medici e Speziali). The 1403 guild statutes specified exact dimensions for fine gold (oro fine), part gold (oro di meta), and silver leaf (ariento battuto). A 2020 study published in Heritage examined the rarely surviving "oro di meta" gilding, which consists of two separate layers of gold and silver. The shift away from gold-leaf backgrounds began in the early fifteenth century with Early Netherlandish painters. Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden began replacing solid gold backgrounds with painted representations of gold, brocade, and architectural space. A study by Jeanne Nuechterlein, published through the University of York, argues that "early Netherlandish painting transformed gilding practices, emphasizing representation over material wealth. Between the 1420s-30s, artists reduced gold-leaf backgrounds, focusing on depicting spatial depth." This was not just an aesthetic choice. In Italy, the transition came later. Fra Angelico still used gold-leaf backgrounds in the 1430s, as did Gentile da Fabriano in the Adoration of the Magi (1423, Uffizi). But by the mid-fifteenth century, the gold background was giving way to painted landscapes and architectural settings. Gold leaf continued to be used for halos, rays of light, and decorative details, but the solid gold field that had defined medieval panel painting disappeared.

Key Artists and Works

Giotto di Bondone (c. 1267-1337)

Giotto's Ognissanti Madonna (c. 1310, Uffizi) uses a traditional gold-leaf background, but the figures within it have a solidity and volume that earlier Italo-Byzantine icons lacked. Giotto was working at the moment when gold backgrounds were still standard but the treatment of figures was changing. The Scrovegni Chapel frescoes in Padua (1303-1305) use gold leaf for halos and decorative elements within a broader painted scheme.

Fra Angelico (c. 1395-1455)

Fra Angelico was one of the last great practitioners of the gold-leaf background. His San Marco Altarpiece (c. 1438-1440, San Marco, Florence) uses a gold-leaf background behind the enthroned Madonna and saints. The gold is burnished to a mirror finish, creating a surface that reflects light and gives the panel a luminous quality that painted gold cannot replicate.

Gentile da Fabriano (c. 1370-1427)

Gentile's Adoration of the Magi (1423, Uffizi) is the high point of the International Gothic style in Italy. The predella and main panel use extensive gilding, including tooled gold for the halos, brocade patterns on the figures' clothing, and the gold background. The painting shows gilding at its most elaborate, with multiple techniques used in the same work.

Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441)

Van Eyck represents the turning point. His Ghent Altarpiece (1432, Saint Bavo Cathedral, Ghent) still uses gold leaf for halos and decorative elements, but the backgrounds are painted architectural and landscape settings rather than solid gold. Van Eyck also painted representations of gold brocade with such precision that the painted gold looks like actual gilding, a technical feat that helped justify the shift from real gold to represented gold.

Byzantine Icon Painters

The Byzantine tradition of icon painting maintained gold-leaf backgrounds far longer than Western Europe. Icons from the thirteenth through fifteenth centuries, such as the Vladimir Virgin (twelfth century, Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow), use gold leaf for the background and the halo. The gold in Byzantine icons is not burnished to the mirror finish of Italian panels. It is left matte, producing a softer, more atmospheric luminosity that suits the spiritual purpose of the image.

How to Spot Gilding in a Painting

Real gold leaf has a visual quality that painted gold does not. It reflects light directionally, so as you move around a painting, the gold changes in brightness. Painted gold, which is made from ochre or metallic paint, has a uniform appearance that does not change with the viewing angle. In a museum, walk to the side of a medieval panel painting and look at the background from an angle. If the gold brightens or darkens as you move, it is real gold leaf.

Look for tooling and punching. Gold-leaf backgrounds in Italian panel paintings are often decorated with incised patterns, punch marks, and tooled borders. These were made with metal tools pressed into the gold and the underlying gesso before the gold was applied or after it was burnished. The patterns include rosettes, dots, circles, and vine scrolls. Tooling is a sign of water gilding, because mordant gilding is too delicate to withstand the pressure of a metal tool.

The color of the bole layer is sometimes visible where the gold has worn away. Red bole, the most common, gives a warm undertone to the gold that is visible in areas of loss or at the edges of the leaf. This red undertone is one of the diagnostic features of traditional water gilding.

Related Techniques

Gold leaf is one of several metal-leaf techniques used in art. Silver leaf was used alongside gold in medieval paintings, though it tarnishes over time and is less commonly preserved. "Mosaic gold," a pigment made from tin and sulfur that imitated gold, was used in manuscript illumination as a cheaper alternative.
