Michelangelo spent four years lying on his back on a wooden scaffold sixty feet above the floor of the Sistine Chapel, painting the ceiling. He was not painting on a surface. He was painting into a surface. Each day, his assistants spread a thin layer of wet lime plaster onto the ceiling, and Michelangelo painted directly into the wet plaster before it dried. The paint did not sit on top of the wall. It became part of the wall, chemically fused with the calcium carbonate as the plaster cured. When the plaster dried, the painting was not on the ceiling. It was the ceiling. That is what buon fresco means, and it is why Michelangelo's ceiling has survived for over 500 years.
Fresco, or more precisely buon fresco (Italian for "true fresh"), is a mural painting technique in which water-based pigments are applied to wet lime plaster. As the plaster dries, the calcium hydroxide in the plaster reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to form calcium carbonate, the same compound that makes up limestone and marble. The pigments become locked inside this crystalline matrix, bonding with the wall at a chemical level. The painting is not on the surface. It is inside the surface. What Is Buon Fresco and How Does It Work?
The technique depends on the chemistry of lime. Slaked lime, or calcium hydroxide, is mixed with sand to make plaster. When the plaster is applied to a wall and exposed to air, the calcium hydroxide reacts with atmospheric CO2 to form calcium carbonate (CaCO3). This process, called carbonation, creates a hard, crystalline surface that traps the pigments within it. The painting becomes physically integrated with the wall structure.
The practical consequence is that the painter must work fast. Once the final layer of plaster, called the intonaco, is applied, the pigments must be laid down before the plaster dries. This means the painter can only work on an area small enough to be completed in a single day. These daily sections are called giornate, from the Italian word for day. The joins between giornate are often visible in finished frescoes as faint seams, and they provide a record of the painting's execution, day by day.
The wall preparation involves multiple layers. Alberti, in his Ten Books on Architecture, provided the most complete Renaissance account of the three layers. The first layer, the arriccio, is a rough coat of lime and coarse sand applied to the masonry wall. The alkaline nature of lime (pH approximately 12 to 13) limits the palette. Only pigments that are chemically stable in an alkaline environment can be used: ochres, iron oxides, earth pigments, and lime white. Pigments containing copper or lead are generally unsuitable because the lime damages them. This is why blues were a particular problem in fresco. Ultramarine, made from lapis lazuli, was sometimes applied a secco (on dry plaster) after the fresco had dried, because it was too valuable to risk in the wet plaster and could be damaged by the lime. Michelangelo used azurite blue applied a secco for some of the backgrounds in the Sistine Chapel, though much of this has deteriorated over the centuries.
Origins and History
Fresco is ancient. The earliest known frescoes date to the seventeenth century BCE and were found in the excavations of Akrotiri on the island of Santorini in Greece. The technique was practiced throughout the ancient Mediterranean, and well-preserved examples survive from Roman Pompeii and Herculaneum. Fra Angelico's frescoes at the Convento di San Marco in Florence (1438-1445) are the most intimate fresco cycle of the Renaissance. Each monk's cell contains a single fresco of a scene from the life of Christ, painted in a simple, devotional style. The Annunciation at the top of the stairs is the most famous, but the power of the cycle lies in the cumulative effect of encountering these quiet paintings in the small, plain cells where they were meant to be seen.
Diego Rivera (1886-1957)
Rivera revived fresco in the twentieth century. His History of Mexico (1929-1935) in the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City covers over 1,200 square meters and depicts the entire history of the Mexican people from the pre-Columbian era to the twentieth century. Rivera used traditional buon fresco techniques, working with lime plaster and earth pigments, and his work demonstrates that the technique is not confined to the Renaissance.
How to Spot Buon Fresco
The surface of a buon fresco is matte, not glossy. The paint has no varnish or surface coating, because the pigments are inside the plaster rather than on top of it. The colors are typically muted compared to oil painting, because the alkaline environment limits the palette to earth pigments. Blues are often missing or applied a secco, because ultramarine and azurite were not stable in wet lime.
Look for the giornate. In well-preserved frescoes, the joins between daily sections are visible as faint lines, especially in raking light. These joins show where the painter stopped each day and where the next day's plaster began. They are a record of the painting's execution and are unique to buon fresco. Buon fresco is contrasted with secco painting, in which pigments mixed with an organic binder are applied to dry plaster. Secco is less durable but allows a longer working time and a wider range of pigments. Many Renaissance frescoes combine both techniques: the main composition is painted in buon fresco, and details, blues, and final touches are added a secco. A third variation, mezzo fresco, involves applying pigments mixed with lime water onto partially dry plaster, creating a weaker bond than buon fresco but stronger than secco.
