Walk through any museum with a medieval or Renaissance collection and you will see circles of gold everywhere. They float behind the heads of Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints, angels, and sometimes kings. Most people call them halos. Art historians call them nimbuses, and the distinction between the two words tells you something about how the symbol developed. A halo is any radiant light around a sacred figure. A nimbus is specifically the disk or ring around the head, as opposed to the mandorla, the almond-shaped aureole that surrounds the entire body. The nimbus has been used for over 2,000 years across multiple religions, and its form carries precise theological information if you know how to read it.

The nimbus is a visual shorthand for sanctity, divine favor, or spiritual authority. It works by isolating the head of a sacred figure with a circle of light, gold, or color, separating that figure from the surrounding space and marking them as set apart. The form varies: a solid gold disk, a ring of light, a rayed crown, or a painted circle inscribed with text. What stays constant is the function. The nimbus tells the viewer immediately who is sacred and who is not.
In Christian art, the nimbus developed a precise visual code. Christ received a cruciform nimbus, a circle crossed by a horizontal and vertical bar, from the 6th century onward. God the Father received a triangular nimbus with three rays, signifying the Trinity. The Holy Spirit, when depicted as a dove, received a small radiance. Saints received plain circular nimbuses. Angels received nimbuses from the 5th century. The Virgin Mary received hers from the 6th century. A square nimbus was a special case: it was used for living persons, often patrons or donors, who had not yet been canonized but were considered worthy of honor. The nimbus predates Christianity by centuries. In Hellenistic and Roman art, the sun god Helios and Roman emperors appeared with crowns of rays or disks of light. A 2nd-century Roman floor mosaic preserved at the Bardo Museum in Tunis shows a haloed Poseidon in his chariot. The radiance signified divine or semi-divine status, and it was borrowed from Persian and Zoroastrian traditions of the "hvarena," the divine luminous glory that marked kings and gods.
Early Christian art avoided the nimbus because of its pagan associations. The first Christian use appears in the mid-4th century, when Christian emperors adopted the imperial nimbus for their official portraits. Between the 6th and 12th centuries, the nimbus was depicted as luminous and transparent. You could see the background through it. Later representations became more stylized and opaque. Between 1300 and 1500, the name or initials of the saint were often inscribed on the nimbus itself, turning the symbol into a label as well as a marker. This practice was especially common in Italian Renaissance painting.
The nimbus also appears outside Christian art. In Buddhist iconography, halos appear from at least the 1st century AD. The Kushan Bimaran casket in the British Museum, dated to around 60 AD, shows the Buddha with a halo. Giotto's frescoes in the Arena Chapel in Padua (c. 1305) show the nimbus at a transitional moment. His figures carry solid gold disks behind their heads, but Giotto begins to model the nimbus as a physical object rather than a flat symbol. In the Lamentation, the angels' nimbuses are tilted in perspective, foreshortened to follow the angle of their heads. This was a departure from the flat, frontal nimbuses of Byzantine art.
Fra Angelico used the nimbus with precision in his San Marco frescoes (1440s) in Florence. Each saint carries a nimbus inscribed with the saint's name in gold lettering. The nimbuses are thin gold rings rather than solid disks, a style that Fra Angelico helped popularize in 15th-century Italian painting. Botticelli's Madonna of the Magnificat (c. 1481, Uffizi) shows the Virgin with a large, radiant nimbus that fills the upper portion of the painting. The nimbus is not a simple disk but a burst of golden rays, a form that emphasizes the Virgin's glory. Botticelli also painted nimbuses as delicate, linear circles in works like the Bardi Altarpiece (1485), where the thinness of the ring contrasts with the rich color of the figures.
Raphael's Disputation of the Holy Sacrament (1509-1510, Vatican Stanza della Segnatura) shows the full hierarchy of nimbuses. Christ at the top has a cruciform nimbus surrounded by a mandorla. God the Father above him has a radiance of golden rays. The saints and Church Fathers below have plain circular nimbuses, some inscribed with names. Raphael used the nimbus as an organizational tool, sorting the figures by the type and complexity of their haloes.
El Greco, working in Counter-Reformation Spain, used the nimbus in a highly expressive way. In The Burial of the Count of Orgaz (1586-1588, Church of Santo Tome, Toledo), the heavenly figures above carry luminous, elongated nimbuses that blend into the swirling composition. El Greco's nimbuses are not flat disks but pulsing rings of light that participate in the emotional intensity of the scene.
Look for the circle behind the head. That is the basic test. But once you find it, look at the shape and decoration. A cross inside the circle means Christ. Three rays or a triangle means the Trinity. A square means a living person, usually a donor. A ring of rays rather than a solid disk suggests a more radiant or powerful figure. An inscribed name or initials helps identify the saint.
In Byzantine icons, the nimbus is typically a flat gold disk with no modeling. In early Renaissance painting, it becomes a thinner ring, sometimes perspectivally foreshortened. By the High Renaissance, artists like Raphael use the nimbus as a compositional element, placing it to organize the hierarchy of figures. In some paintings, the nimbus is absent even for sacred figures. This is common in Northern Renaissance art, where artists like Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden sometimes omitted haloes to create a more naturalistic effect. The iconography of the nimbus is not universal. Its presence or absence is a deliberate choice by the artist.
The nimbus overlaps with several related terms. The Byzantine art tradition is where the Christian nimbus was codified, and Byzantine icons show the most consistent use of the symbol. The mandorla, a related but distinct form, is an almond-shaped aureole that surrounds the entire body of Christ or the Virgin, typically in depictions of the Last Judgment or the Transfiguration. The nimbus goes around the head; the mandorla goes around the body.
The gold leaf used for nimbuses in medieval and Renaissance painting is the same material used for the gold backgrounds of altarpieces. The luminosity of the nimbus depends on the properties of gold leaf, which reflects light in a way that no pigment can match. Fresco painters faced a different challenge: gold leaf does not adhere well to wet plaster, so nimbuses in fresco were often painted in yellow pigment or applied as a separate layer after the plaster dried.
