Michelangelo painted only one finished panel painting in his entire life. It is round. The Doni Tondo, painted around 1507 for the Florentine merchant Agnolo Doni, is a circular painting 120 centimeters in diameter, depicting the Holy Family in a tight pyramidal group with five nude figures in the background. It is the only panel painting by Michelangelo whose attribution has never been questioned, and it is still in its original frame, designed by Michelangelo himself and carved by Francesco del Tasso. The painting hangs in the Uffizi in Florence, and its shape is not incidental. The tondo was the standard format for domestic devotional painting in Renaissance Florence, and Michelangelo chose it deliberately for a painting commissioned to celebrate a marriage and the birth of a child.
A tondo is a circular painting, relief, or panel. The word comes from the Italian "tondo," meaning round, which derives from the Latin "rotundus." Tondi (the Italian plural) were produced primarily in Florence during the 15th and 16th centuries as domestic devotional objects, typically showing the Madonna and Child and hung in the bedrooms or private chapels of wealthy households. The circular format presented a specific compositional challenge: how to organize figures within a circle rather than a rectangle. Artists responded with pyramidal compositions, radial arrangements, and spiraling forms that exploited the geometry of the circle. The tondo fell from use after the 16th century but was revived in the 19th and 20th centuries by artists who used the circular format for its own sake.

The tondo is defined by its circular shape. A painting executed on a circular panel, a relief carved on a circular slab, or a composition designed for a circular format, all are tondi. The format presents a compositional problem that rectangular paintings do not. A rectangle has a natural top, bottom, and sides. A circle has no inherent orientation. The artist must create the composition's internal structure without relying on the frame's geometry to organize the image.
Renaissance painters solved this problem in several ways. The most common solution was the pyramidal composition, with the Virgin and Child forming a triangle in the center and secondary figures arranged around the base. This filled the circle efficiently and created a stable focal point. Another solution was the radial composition, with figures arranged around the circumference like the spokes of a wheel. A third approach used the circle's curvature to create spiraling or rotating compositions, where the figures' gestures follow the circular edge.

The tondo has ancient roots. Circular paintings and reliefs were produced in Greek and Roman art, particularly in the form of painted roundels on ceramics and carved circular medallions. The word "tondo" itself is Italian, but the format predates the Italian Renaissance by centuries.
In Western painting, the tondo as a distinct format emerged in Florence in the mid-15th century. The earliest examples were associated with the domestic interior. Wealthy Florentine families commissioned circular paintings of the Madonna and Child for their homes, particularly for bedrooms and private chapels. The tondo was associated with marriage and childbirth: the circular shape was connected to the idea of completion and perfection, and the Madonna and Child subject was appropriate for a household celebrating fertility and family.
Michelangelo approached the tondo through sculpture before painting. His Pitti Tondo (c. 1503-1504, Bargello Museum, Florence) and Taddei Tondo (c. 1504-1505, Royal Academy, London) are marble reliefs of the Virgin, Child, and Infant Saint John, carved in circular format. In both, the figures powerfully occupy the whole surface of the relief, demonstrating how the circular format could contain a compressed, sculptural composition. The tondo remained popular through the 16th century. Raphael, Botticelli, and other Florentine painters produced tondi for domestic patrons. By the 17th century, the format was declining. Baroque art favored dramatic, diagonal compositions that worked better in rectangular formats. The tondo survived in decorative arts, particularly in painted roundels on ceilings and in maiolica ware, but it disappeared from easel painting.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the tondo was revived by artists who used the circular format for its visual properties rather than its domestic associations. The format has been used by modern painters from Adolph Gottlieb to Damien Hirst, who have exploited the circle's lack of conventional orientation to create compositions that are self-contained and non-hierarchical.
The Doni Tondo (c. 1507, Uffizi, Florence) is the most famous tondo ever painted. Commissioned by Agnolo Doni to celebrate his marriage to Maddalena Strozzi, it shows the Holy Family in a tight pyramidal group, with the Christ Child passed between Joseph and Mary. Five nude figures lean against a balustrade in the background, separated from the Holy Family by a low wall. The nudes are thought to represent pagan humanity, and the wall represents original sin. The painting shows the influence of the Laocoon, excavated in January 1506, in the pose of one of the background nudes. The Doni Tondo is painted in tempera on wood, and pigment analysis has revealed that Michelangelo avoided earth pigments and used very little vermilion, relying instead on a cangiante technique of shifting colors for shading. The frame, designed by Michelangelo and carved by Francesco del Tasso, shows the head of Christ and four prophets surrounded by grotesques and racemes, with the Strozzi family's half-moon emblem hidden in the upper left.
Botticelli painted several tondi, the most notable being the Madonna of the Magnificat (c. 1481, Uffizi, Florence) and the Madonna of the Pomegranate (c. 1487, National Gallery, London). The Madonna of the Magnificat is a large tondo, 118 centimeters in diameter, showing the Virgin and Child surrounded by angels. The circular format allows Botticelli to create a composition that radiates outward from the Virgin's face at the center, with the angels' wings and hands following the curve of the circle. The painting was originally a domestic devotional work but entered the Medici collection and is now one of the most recognized images of the Renaissance.
Raphael's Madonna della Seggiola (c. 1513-1514, Palazzo Pitti, Florence) is a tondo showing the Virgin and Child with the infant Saint John. The composition fills the circle with the Virgin's embracing posture, her arms wrapping around the Christ Child in a gesture that follows the curvature of the panel. The painting is notable for its intimacy and warmth, qualities that suited the domestic context for which it was commissioned. Raphael also painted the Alba Madonna (c. 1510, National Gallery of Art, Washington), another tondo of the Virgin and Child with Saint John, set in a landscape.
Della Robbia produced glazed terracotta tondi that were among the most widely circulated circular artworks of the Renaissance. His Madonna and Child tondi, made in the 1440s and 1450s, used the circular format for relief sculpture rather than painting. The white and blue glaze gave the works a luminous quality that was resistant to weather, making them suitable for exterior architectural decoration as well as interior use. Della Robbia's tondi were produced in his workshop in significant numbers and spread throughout Tuscany.
In the 20th century, Gottlieb used the tondo format for his Burst paintings, beginning in the 1950s. These large circular canvases show a radiant sun-like form above a more chaotic field, exploiting the circle's association with cosmic and celestial imagery. Gottlieb's tondi are abstract, but they inherit the format's Renaissance association with completeness and spiritual focus.
If a painting is round, it is a tondo. The format is unambiguous. What to look for is how the artist handles the composition within the circle. Does the composition follow the curvature, with figures or gestures echoing the circular edge? Does the artist use a pyramidal structure to fill the center? Is there a clear focal point that anchors the composition, or does the image rotate around the circle without a fixed orientation?
In Renaissance tondi, the Madonna and Child is the most common subject. The Virgin is typically placed at or near the center, with the Christ Child below or beside her. Secondary figures, such as Saint John the Baptist or angels, are arranged around the periphery. The background may be a landscape, an architectural setting, or a gold ground, depending on the date and origin of the painting.
The panel used for a Renaissance tondo was typically made from a single piece of wood, cut to a circular shape. The frame was usually circular as well, often gilded and carved with decorative motifs. Some tondi were painted on canvas stretched over a circular frame, but the panel version was more common in the 15th century. The paint was typically tempera in the 15th century and oil in the 16th.
The tondo is related to several other formats in this glossary. The polyptych and triptych are multi-panel formats that were used for public altarpieces, while the tondo was primarily a domestic format. The diptych was another portable, private format, but it was hinged and foldable, while the tondo was a single fixed panel.
The High Renaissance period in Florence was the golden age of the tondo. The Early Renaissance saw the format's emergence, and the Renaissance more broadly was the period when the tondo was most widely used. The composition challenges of the circular format pushed artists to develop new ways of organizing figures, and these innovations influenced rectangular painting as well.
The nimbus, or halo, is itself a circular form, and the association between circularity and sanctity in Christian art may have contributed to the tondo's use for devotional images. The gold leaf backgrounds of early tondi created a luminous, non-naturalistic space that complemented the circular format's association with perfection and transcendence.
