Stand close to a charcoal drawing by Odilon Redon and you see smudges. Broad patches of black and gray, blended into the paper with a chamois cloth or a fingertip. There are no lines. No outlines. No cross-hatching. Step back six feet and the smudges become a face, a landscape, a figure emerging from darkness. The form is built entirely from tonal relationships, the relative darkness of one patch compared to another. This is tonal drawing, and it is closer to how human vision actually works than any line-based method.
Tonal drawing is a drawing approach that builds form through patches of light and dark rather than through lines. Instead of describing a figure with contours, the tonal artist describes it with masses of tone that blend into each other without hard boundaries. The technique is also called mass drawing, and it is the drawing equivalent of painting with oils: the artist works from general tonal areas toward specific forms, adjusting values rather than adding lines.

Linear drawing and tonal drawing are two fundamentally different approaches to representing the visual world. Linear drawing favors boundaries: the artist describes a figure by drawing its edges, then fills in details within those edges. Tonal drawing favors masses: the artist describes a figure by placing patches of value, and the edges emerge where one tonal area meets another. In linear drawing, the line is the primary tool. In tonal drawing, the line does not exist.
The distinction is not just technical. It reflects two different ways of seeing. Linear drawing treats objects as discrete things with clear borders. Tonal drawing treats the visual field as a continuous surface of light and dark, where objects are not separate from their surroundings but are simply areas of different value. As the artist and teacher Harold Speed wrote in The Practice and Science of Drawing (1913): "In opposition to line drawing, we may call this mass drawing. The art of China and Japan appears to have been more influenced by this view of natural appearances than that of the West has been, until quite lately."

Tonal drawing developed from linear drawing through the evolution of materials and practices. Earlier drawing instruments, such as the metalpoint stylus and the goose quill, were hard and unforgiving. They produced lines on hard surfaces like parchment and vellum. As linen and cotton rag papers became widely available in the 13th century, softer and broader drawing implements became possible. Charcoal, chalk, and wash could be applied in masses, not just lines. This material shift opened the door to tonal thinking.
Leonardo da Vinci was the pivotal figure in the emergence of tonal drawing. He worked at a time of unprecedented curiosity about the visual field, exploring what the eye actually sees. His writings are filled with observations about light, shadow, atmosphere, and distance. In his Treatise on Painting, he wrote as a pure tonalist: "The end of any color is only the beginning of another, and it ought not to be called a line, for nothing interposes between them, except the termination of the one against the other, which being nothing in itself, cannot be perceivable." He also wrote: "Take care that the shadows and lights be united or lost in each other, without any hard strokes or lines; as smoke loses itself in the air, so are your lights and shadows to pass from one to the other without any apparent separation."
Leonardo was able to take discoveries from oil painting and apply them to drawing. Oil paint, with its slow drying time and ability to blend, had given artists the technical means to record tonal observations. Leonardo transferred this approach to drawing using charcoal, chalk, and wash on paper. His studies for paintings like the Adoration of the Magi (1481, Uffizi) show tonal thinking: figures are described by patches of light and shadow, not by outlines.
The development of tonal drawing was also driven by an increasing interest in unusual lighting conditions. Guercino's Seated Woman Reading a Book, a study for the allegorical figure of Night in the Casino Ludovisi (c. 1621-1623), is an early example of a drawing where the effect of light itself has become the subject. The figure is less important than how she is lit, and the use of light and dark patches has become more important than the linear underpinning.
Leonardo is the bridge between linear and tonal drawing. His early drawings, made with metalpoint on prepared paper, are linear. His later drawings, made with charcoal, red chalk, and wash, are tonal. The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and the Infant Saint John the Baptist (c. 1499-1500, National Gallery, London) is a cartoon that shows tonal drawing at its most refined: figures built from soft gradations of charcoal and chalk, with no hard outlines anywhere.
Guercino's drawings for the Casino Ludovisi frescoes in Rome are among the earliest drawings where tonal thinking dominates. Seated Woman Reading a Book (c. 1621-1623) uses wash and charcoal to describe a figure lit by an unusual light source. The drawing is about the lighting, not the figure. This shift, from drawing the object to drawing the light on the object, is the defining move of tonal drawing.
Redon's charcoal drawings, which he called "noirs," are tonal drawing pushed to its extreme. Works like The Spider (c. 1881, Musée d'Orsay) and The Cyclops (c. 1898-1900, Kröller-Müller Museum) build entire images from smudged charcoal masses with no lines. Redon exploited the tonal range of charcoal to create dreamlike images that emerge from darkness, literally and metaphorically. His noirs demonstrate that tonal drawing can be a finished art form, not just a preparatory method.
Johnson's study for The Boy Lincoln is a later example of tonal drawing driven by specific lighting. The charcoal and white chalk study describes a boy reading by firelight, and the unusual light source provokes the same move into tonal thinking that Guercino's night scene did centuries earlier. When the lighting is strange, linear drawing fails because the edges are unclear. Tonal drawing succeeds because it describes the light itself.
Tanner, an African American painter who spent most of his career in Paris, produced tonal drawings and paintings that use light and shadow masses to create atmosphere and spiritual depth. His Banjo Lesson (1893, Hampton University Museum) uses tonal relationships to describe the warm light on two figures in a dim interior, with the composition built from value masses rather than outlines.
Use charcoal, either vine or compressed, on a toned or white paper. A chamois cloth or kneaded eraser is essential for blending and lifting tone. Start by squinting at your subject to reduce it to three or four basic values: light, middle, dark, and darkest dark. Block in these masses with the side of the charcoal, covering the entire paper quickly. Do not draw lines. Do not draw outlines. Work entirely in patches of tone.
Once the basic value structure is established, begin refining. Adjust the shape of a tonal mass by adding or lifting charcoal. Find the darkest dark and the lightest light and make sure everything else falls between them. Edges will emerge where two tonal areas meet. Some edges will be sharp, where the tonal contrast is strong. Others will be soft, where tones blend gradually. This variation in edge quality is one of the strengths of tonal drawing, because it mirrors how the eye perceives edges in reality: some are in focus, others are not.
Artists Network describes a five-step mass drawing process that begins with placement marks, moves to spotting in tones, then shaping the tones, establishing the darkest and lightest values, and finally knitting the tones together with accents and edge variation. Tonal drawing is closely related to chiaroscuro, which uses light-dark contrast to model form in painting. The two terms describe the same principle in different mediums: chiaroscuro in paint, tonal drawing in dry media. When you look at tonal drawings in person, notice how the surface has no lines. The form is built entirely from the relative darkness of one area compared to another.
