Stand in front of one of Giorgio Morandi's still-life paintings at the Estorick Collection in London and you might wonder why the bottles look so familiar. They are the same bottles he painted dozens of times. What changes is the tone. Morandi mixed his colors with gray until the canvas hummed at a frequency so low it was almost a whisper. A pale lavender bottle sits next to a warm pink-gray one. Neither color is pure. Both have been pulled away from saturation and toward a middle ground where hue is barely detectable. This is tone at work, and most painters spend years learning to control it.
In color theory, tone is a color mixed with gray. The gray reduces the saturation (also called intensity or chroma) of the hue without changing its fundamental identity. A red mixed with gray becomes a muted, dusty rose. A blue mixed with gray becomes a soft slate. The hue is still recognizable as red or blue, but the intensity has been lowered. Tone is one of three ways artists modify a pure hue, alongside tint (color plus white) and shade (color plus black). Together, these three operations form the basis of practical color mixing.

Tone is the result of mixing a pure hue with neutral gray. The gray can be any value, from light gray to dark gray, which means toning a color can also shift its brightness. Mix red with a light gray and you get a soft, pale rose. Mix red with a dark gray and you get a deep, muted maroon. In both cases, the saturation drops. The color moves away from its pure, intense state and toward a more neutral version of itself.
The Munsell Color System, developed by Albert Henry Munsell in 1905, describes this precisely. In Munsell's three-dimensional model, saturation is called "chroma" and radiates outward from the central axis. The central axis is neutral gray, running from white at the top to black at the bottom. A high-chroma color sits far from the central axis. A toned color sits closer to it. The more gray you add, the closer the color moves toward the neutral axis and the lower its chroma becomes.
A 2025 study published in BMC Psychology used the Munsell Color System to investigate how art and non-art students emotionally perceive color across hue, saturation, and brightness dimensions. The study found that saturation significantly influences emotional responses. High-saturation colors evoked stronger emotional arousal, while low-saturation, softer tones promoted relaxation and calmness. Art students showed slight sensitivity to brightness and hue variations, while non-art students responded more strongly to saturation. Every pure hue can be modified in three ways. A tint is hue plus white, which raises the brightness and lowers the saturation slightly. A shade is hue plus black, which lowers the brightness and lowers the saturation. A tone is hue plus gray, which lowers the saturation while leaving the brightness relatively stable (depending on the value of the gray used).
The distinction matters because each modifier produces a different visual and emotional effect. Tints feel airy, light, and optimistic. Shades feel heavy, dark, and dramatic. Tones feel muted, subdued, and natural. Most of the colors you see in the real world are tones, not pure hues. A brick wall is a toned red. A lawn is a toned green. The sky on an overcast day is a toned blue. Pure, high-chroma colors are rare in nature, which is why a painting built entirely from saturated colors can look artificial.
A 2026 study published in Frontiers in Psychology constructed a "Theme-Color-Emotion" framework to analyze how visual characteristics of artworks influence viewer emotional responses. The research found that low-saturation, softer tones promoted relaxation and calmness, clustering with emotions like "contemplation" and "satisfaction." High-saturation warm colors clustered with "excitement" and "pleasure." The framework achieved 87.6% accuracy in classifying artworks by emotional valence, confirming that tonal choices are not just aesthetic decisions but psychological ones. Whistler made tone the subject of painting. His Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket (1875, Detroit Institute of Arts) depicts a fireworks display over the Thames in a palette of dark, toned grays, blues, and greens punctuated by small flecks of warm color. Whistler described a nocturne as "an arrangement of line, form and color first," meaning the subject was secondary to the tonal relationships. He mixed his colors with gray and black until the painting became almost monochromatic, then added tiny accents of higher-chroma color to create sparks of contrast. The result is a painting that feels like night itself: muted, atmospheric, and quiet.
The Tate notes that Whistler took the name "nocturne" from a musical term, emphasizing that his paintings were compositions in tone rather than depictions of specific places. The comparison to music is apt. A toned palette, like a minor key, produces a specific emotional register that the viewer feels before they identify the subject.
Morandi painted the same bottles, jars, and boxes for decades, mixing his colors with gray until the entire canvas vibrated at a barely perceptible chroma. His Still Life (1956, Tate Modern) shows five objects in tones of cream, pale pink, and warm gray. The colors are so close in saturation that the composition reads almost as a monochrome, yet each object has a distinct hue if you look carefully. Morandi's tonal control was so precise that shifting one bottle by a centimeter could change the entire tonal balance of the painting.
Morandi's approach to tone influenced generations of painters who understood that reducing saturation could intensify the viewer's attention. When the eye is not overwhelmed by high-chroma color, it notices subtler relationships: the slight temperature shift between a warm gray and a cool gray, the barely perceptible difference between a toned lavender and a toned pink.
Velazquez used tone to create atmospheric depth in his portraits and historical scenes. Las Meninas (1656, Museo del Prado) is built on a tonal palette of grays, browns, and muted earth colors, with small areas of higher-chroma color reserved for the Infanta's dress and the details of the courtiers' clothing. The tonal background recedes, creating the illusion of depth in the room, while the slightly more saturated foreground figures advance. Velazquez understood that tone, not hue, creates spatial relationships.
Chardin's still-life paintings and genre scenes are masterclasses in tonal harmony. The Ray (1728, Musee du Louvre) depicts a dead skate fish hanging alongside kitchen utensils. The palette is built from toned browns, grays, and muted ochres, with the fish's pale flesh rendered in tones so subtle that the surface seems to glow from within. Chardin mixed his colors with gray to create a sense of quiet domesticity, proving that tonal painting could convey intimacy and warmth without resorting to high-chroma color.
Wyeth's egg tempera paintings, including Christina's World (1948, Museum of Modern Art), use a restricted tonal palette of muted earth colors. The dry grass in the foreground is a toned yellow-brown. The sky is a toned gray-blue. The figure of Christina is a toned pink. Wyeth's tonal control creates a sense of isolation and stillness that pure, saturated colors could never achieve. The muted palette forces the viewer to focus on form, texture, and composition rather than color spectacle.
The easiest way to see tone is to compare two paintings side by side, one built on saturated color and one built on toned color. Henri Matisse's The Red Studio (1911, Museum of Modern Art) is almost entirely high-chroma red. Morandi's still-life paintings are almost entirely toned neutrals. The difference is not just one of palette. It is a difference of emotional register. Matisse's red is loud and insistent. Morandi's tones are quiet and contemplative.
Another way to see tone is to look at a painting and ask yourself: how far from gray is each color? A high-chroma color is far from gray. A toned color is close to gray. Painters who work with tone are constantly measuring this distance, sometimes unconsciously. They mix a color, add a touch of gray, step back, and ask whether the color has moved too far toward neutral or not far enough.
You can also identify tone by its effect on the viewer. Toned palettes slow the eye down. They create a sense of calm, age, and naturalness. High-chroma palettes speed the eye up. They create energy, excitement, and sometimes visual fatigue. Most paintings use a combination of both: toned colors for the majority of the surface, with small areas of higher-chroma color reserved for focal points.
Tone is connected to several other color theory concepts. Color has three dimensions: hue, saturation, and brightness. Tone is the modification of saturation. Value is the brightness dimension, and toning a color with gray of a specific value also affects its overall lightness or darkness. Chiaroscuro relies on value contrast to model form, but toned colors can create softer, more atmospheric transitions than pure hues. Mix a pure color on your palette. Add a small amount of neutral gray. Paint a square. Add more gray. Paint another square next to it. Continue until the color is indistinguishable from gray. You have created a tonal scale, and each step represents a different level of saturation. Now try the same exercise with two complementary colors, toning both toward gray and noticing how their relationship changes as the saturation drops.
