In April 2026, restorers at the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella in Florence completed a delicate operation on Masaccio's Holy Trinity. They physically separated the fresco from the cracking wall behind it, creating a separation joint that allows the painting to move independently of the masonry. The fresco, painted around 1427, had been hidden behind an altar by Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century, rediscovered in the 19th century, detached and remounted on reed matting, and returned to its original location in the 1950s. Now it has been freed again, this time from the structural stresses that threatened to crack its painted surface. The Holy Trinity is the first painting in Western art to use systematic linear perspective, and the fact that we are still engineering ways to keep it alive tells you how much depends on what Masaccio did in that Florentine church.
The Early Renaissance is the first phase of the broader Renaissance, lasting from roughly 1400 to 1490. It was centered in Florence and driven by a specific set of conditions: wealthy merchant patrons, a republican civic culture, a guild system that funded public art, and an intellectual movement called humanism that looked back to classical antiquity for models of art, literature, and government. The Early Renaissance is when the tools and principles of Renaissance art were invented. The High Renaissance that followed was their refinement.
This entry covers what the Early Renaissance was, how it started in Florence, who the key artists were, what specific works defined the period, and how to recognize Early Renaissance paintings when you encounter them.
The Early Renaissance was the period when European art shifted from the medieval conventions of flat, symbolic, hieratic representation to a system based on linear perspective, anatomical observation, classical proportion, and human-centered subject matter. It happened primarily in Florence between roughly 1400 and 1490, and it was not a gradual evolution but a series of specific inventions by specific people in specific places.
Three innovations define the period. First, linear perspective: the geometric system for projecting three-dimensional space onto a flat surface, codified by Filippo Brunelleschi around 1425 and first applied in painting by Masaccio. Second, anatomical realism: the study of the human body through dissection and observation of classical sculpture, producing figures with weight, volume, and musculature. Third, classical subject matter: the introduction of pagan mythology and classical history alongside Christian themes, made possible by the recovery of ancient texts and the humanist philosophy that valued secular learning.
The Early Renaissance also saw the development of the artist's workshop as a structured training system. Apprentices entered as children, ground pigments, copied drawings, and gradually advanced to painting backgrounds and minor figures before executing their own commissions. This system produced artists who were technically fluent from a young age and who absorbed the stylistic innovations of their masters as a matter of course.
The Early Renaissance happened in Florence for specific economic and political reasons. Florence was a banking and wool-trading city, and its wealthiest families competed for civic prestige through artistic patronage. The Medici family, led by Cosimo de' Medici (1389-1464) and later Lorenzo the Magnificent (1449-1492), were the dominant patrons, but they were not alone. The Strozzi, Rucellai, and Sassetti families also commissioned major works. The guilds, which governed the city's economic life, funded the decoration of public buildings including the Cathedral and the Baptistery.
The civic context mattered. Florence was a republic, not a monarchy, and its citizens valued the idea that public art should serve the community. The competition for the Baptistery doors in 1401, won by Lorenzo Ghiberti, was a public event judged by a committee. The doors themselves were a civic project, paid for by the wool merchants' guild. This is different from the courtly patronage of Milan or Naples, where art served a ruler's personal glory.
Intellectually, Florence had a tradition of civic humanism rooted in the writings of Petrarch (1304-1374) and Boccaccio (1313-1375), who had championed the study of classical Latin literature. By the early 1400s, humanist scholars like Leonardo Bruni and Poggio Bracciolini were active in Florence, recovering and translating ancient texts. The scholar Manuel Chrysoloras had taught Greek in Florence at the end of the 14th century, giving Florentines access to Greek texts that had been unavailable in Western Europe for centuries. This intellectual climate provided the philosophical foundation for the artistic revolution.
Brunelleschi was the architect who opened the Early Renaissance. After losing the Baptistery door competition to Ghiberti in 1401, he went to Rome to study ancient architecture. He returned to Florence and, between 1420 and 1436, built the dome of Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Duomo), a structure 45 meters in diameter that had been left open since the 14th century because no one knew how to build it. Brunelleschi solved the engineering problem by designing a double-shell dome with herringbone brickwork and no internal scaffolding, using techniques derived from Roman architecture. He also demonstrated the principles of linear perspective around 1425 using a painted panel of the Baptistery viewed through a hole in a mirror, proving that a three-dimensional scene could be projected onto a flat surface using a single vanishing point.
Donatello was the sculptor who brought classical naturalism to three-dimensional form. His bronze David (c. 1440, Bargello Museum, Florence) is the first free-standing nude sculpture since antiquity. David stands in a relaxed contrapposto pose, wearing only a hat and boots, his hand on his hip, looking down at the severed head of Goliath. The figure is sensuous, youthful, and physically present in a way that medieval sculpture never was. Donatello's bronze Judith and Holofernes (c. 1460, Palazzo Vecchio, Florence) was the first freestanding bronze sculpture of the Renaissance to be placed in a public square. His carved wooden Mary Magdalen (c. 1453-1455, Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence) shows the saint as a gaunt, hollow-eyed penitent, her skin stretched over bone, a study in physical degradation that has no precedent in medieval art.
Masaccio was the painter who translated Brunelleschi's perspective into two-dimensional art. He died at 27, but his surviving works fundamentally changed painting. The Holy Trinity (c. 1427, Santa Maria Novella, Florence) uses a single vanishing point at the base of the cross, with the barrel vault receding into the wall so convincingly that early viewers thought a hole had been cut into the masonry. The figures stand on a platform supported by columns, their bodies modeled with chiaroscuro to create volume and weight. The fresco was conserved in April 2026, when restorers decoupled it from the cracking wall to prevent structural stress from damaging the painted surface. Read about the conservation at The Florentine.
In the Brancacci Chapel (c. 1424-1428, Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence), Masaccio painted the Tribute Money and the Expulsion from Paradise. The Tribute Money uses a single light source and consistent atmospheric perspective to create a coherent outdoor space. The Expulsion shows Adam and Eve walking out of Eden, their bodies heavy with grief, their faces twisted in pain. A 2023 geophysical study published in Remote Sensing used non-invasive imaging to analyze the wall structure and mortar stratigraphy behind the Brancacci frescoes, helping conservators understand the causes of paint detachment. Botticelli was the painter who brought classical mythology into Florentine art. The Birth of Venus (c. 1485, Uffizi) shows the goddess standing on a shell, blown ashore by wind gods, greeted by a figure representing Spring. The painting is painted on canvas, not panel, which was unusual for the time, and uses tempera rather than oil. Venus's elongated body and flowing hair reflect Botticelli's preference for linear elegance over anatomical accuracy. The Primavera (c. 1480, Uffizi) assembles nine mythological figures in an orange grove, their draperery swirling in invisible wind. In June 2026, the Uffizi unveiled new permanent galleries where The Birth of Venus and Primavera face each other directly, creating a visual dialogue between the two most famous images of the Italian Renaissance. Read about the new galleries at The Florentine.
A 2024 study published in X-Ray Spectrometry analyzed a newly discovered Botticelli workshop painting, Virgin and Child with young Saint John the Baptist, using confocal micro-XRF and scanning macro-XRF imaging. The painting, rediscovered by Matteo Gianeselli in 2011 in a church in Champigny-en-Beauce, France, was confirmed as a rare example of Botticelli workshop production from the early 16th century. The analysis identified characteristic pigments and layering techniques specific to the workshop. Read the study at HAL Science.
Botticelli's muse, Simonetta Vespucci, has been the subject of new medical research. A 2026 paper published in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism argues that her sudden death at age 23 in 1476 was caused by pituitary tumor apoplexy, not tuberculosis as historians had assumed. The researchers analyzed changes in Simonetta's facial features across Botticelli's portraits, from the 1470s through the posthumous Birth of Venus, and found gradual shifts consistent with a pituitary adenoma. Read the study at Scientific American.
Piero worked in Florence's rival city, Urbino, and combined Florentine perspective with a mathematical approach to proportion and color. The Baptism of Christ (c. 1450, National Gallery, London) places Christ at the center of a precisely constructed geometric composition, with the river Jordan flowing across the foreground and angels standing in attenuated stillness. Piero wrote treatises on perspective and mathematics that were more rigorous than any artist's before him. His Flagellation of Christ (c. 1455-1460, Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, Urbino) is one of the most analyzed paintings in art history, with its two separate scenes in a single architectural space still generating scholarly debate about its meaning.
Verrocchio ran the most important workshop in Florence in the 1470s, and his pupils included Leonardo da Vinci, Perugino, and Lorenzo di Credi. His bronze Christ and Saint Thomas (1467-1483, Orsanmichele, Florence) shows a relaxed Christ and a doubting Thomas examining his wound, the figures placed in a niche that opens to the street. Verrocchio's workshop was the training ground for the High Renaissance: the techniques, methods, and innovations of the Early Renaissance were transmitted to the next generation through his studio.
The Early Renaissance unfolded through specific, datable events. In 1401, Ghiberti won the Baptistery door competition. In 1420, Brunelleschi began the Cathedral dome. In 1424, Masaccio began the Brancacci Chapel frescoes. In 1425, Brunelleschi demonstrated linear perspective. In 1427, Masaccio painted the Holy Trinity. In 1436, the Cathedral dome was completed. In 1440, Donatello cast his bronze David. In 1453, Piero della Francesca painted the Baptism of Christ. In 1480, Botticelli painted the Primavera. In 1485, Botticelli painted the Birth of Venus. In 1490, the High Renaissance began as Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael emerged as independent masters.
Early Renaissance paintings have a specific look that distinguishes them from both medieval and High Renaissance work. The perspective is present but sometimes awkward, with vanishing points that do not quite align or figures that are too large for their architectural settings. The figures have volume and weight but lack the idealized perfection of High Renaissance bodies. Anatomy is studied but not yet mastered: muscles are sometimes overdefined, gestures sometimes stiff.
Most Early Renaissance paintings are tempera on wood panel, not oil on canvas. The colors are bright and flat compared to the tonal subtlety of later oil painting. Gold leaf backgrounds appear in early works but gradually disappear as perspective and landscape replace them. Halos are still present but shrink from full golden discs to thin rings of light.
Compositions are often symmetrical and frontal, with the central figure elevated and larger than surrounding figures. This hieratic scale is a holdover from medieval art that the Early Renaissance retained even as it introduced spatial depth. The combination of medieval hierarchy and Renaissance space is one of the most distinctive features of the period.
Florence is the city of the Early Renaissance. The Uffizi has the largest collection of Early Renaissance paintings, including Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera, now in new galleries opened in June 2026. The Bargello has Donatello's bronze David and his marble sculptures. Santa Maria Novella has Masaccio's Holy Trinity, freshly conserved. Santa Maria del Carmine has the Brancacci Chapel. The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo has Donatello's Mary Magdalen and the original Baptistery door panels by Ghiberti.
Outside Florence, the National Gallery in London has Piero della Francesca's Baptism of Christ and works by Botticelli and Fra Angelico. The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino has Piero's Flagellation. The Louvre has Early Renaissance works from both Italy and Northern Europe.
