When Masaccio painted the Holy Trinity on the wall of Santa Maria Novella in Florence around 1427, people reportedly thought a hole had been cut into the wall. The fresco used Brunelleschi's newly codified system of linear perspective so accurately that the painted barrel vault receded into an illusory space that simply did not exist in Western painting before that moment. In April 2026, the fresco underwent a major conservation intervention in which restorers physically decoupled it from the cracking wall behind it, allowing the artwork to move and adapt without sustaining damage. The Renaissance was a period of artistic, intellectual, and cultural transformation that lasted roughly from 1400 to 1600. It began in Florence and spread across Italy and then Europe. The word means "rebirth," and what was reborn was the art, architecture, and philosophy of classical antiquity. Greek and Roman models of proportion, anatomy, and spatial representation were studied, adapted, and combined with new scientific discoveries about optics, anatomy, and geometry. The result was a revolution in how pictures were made and what they were for.

The Renaissance was not a single event or a coordinated movement. It was a shift in attitude that happened over two centuries, driven by patrons, artists, scholars, and merchants in Italian city-states who looked back to ancient Rome and Greece for models of how art and life should work. The period is generally divided into the Early Renaissance (c. 1400-1490), the High Renaissance (c. 1490-1527), and Mannerism (c. 1520-1600), each with distinct characteristics but sharing a common foundation in classical humanism and scientific observation.
Three things distinguish Renaissance art from the medieval art that preceded it. First, linear perspective: the systematic use of a vanishing point and orthogonal lines to create the illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat surface. Second, humanism: a philosophical shift that placed human beings, human experience, and human anatomy at the center of artistic representation, rather than the hierarchical, symbolic conventions of medieval Christian art. Third, classical revival: the deliberate study and imitation of ancient Greek and Roman art, architecture, and literature, which provided new models for proportion, composition, and subject matter.
The Renaissance also coincided with technical innovations in painting. Oil painting, developed in Northern Europe by Jan van Eyck and his contemporaries in the early 1400s, reached Italy by the 1470s and gradually replaced egg tempera as the dominant medium. Oil paint allowed for glazing, sfumato, and subtle tonal transitions that tempera could not achieve. The camera obscura began to be used as an optical tool. Chiaroscuro, the systematic use of light and shadow to model three-dimensional form, became a foundational technique.
The Renaissance began in Florence in the early 1400s, and the reasons are specific to that city. Florence was a wealthy mercantile republic where banking families, particularly the Medici, competed for status through artistic patronage. The city had a tradition of civic humanism rooted in the writings of Petrarch and Boccaccio, who had championed the study of classical texts. The Florentine guild system funded public art through commissions for the cathedral and the Baptistery doors.
In 1401, Lorenzo Ghiberti won the competition to design the bronze doors of the Florence Baptistery, beating Filippo Brunelleschi. The doors, with their classically proportioned figures and spatial depth, are often cited as the opening shot of the Renaissance. Brunelleschi, meanwhile, turned to architecture. Between 1420 and 1436, he built the dome of Florence Cathedral using engineering principles derived from Roman architecture, a feat that had seemed impossible for a thousand years.
Brunelleschi also demonstrated the principles of linear perspective around 1425 using a painted panel of the Baptistery viewed through a hole in a mirror. The experiment proved that a three-dimensional scene could be projected onto a flat surface using a single vanishing point. Masaccio applied this discovery in the Brancacci Chapel frescoes (c. 1424-1428) and the Holy Trinity (c. 1427), making him the first painter to use systematic perspective in a major work.
The Renaissance spread from Florence to Rome, Venice, Milan, and beyond. In Rome, the papacy became the dominant patron after Pope Julius II (ruled 1503-1513) commissioned Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling and Raphael to decorate the Vatican Stanze. In Venice, a distinct tradition developed around color and light, driven by the availability of expensive pigments and the damp climate that favored oil on canvas rather than fresco. In Northern Europe, a parallel Renaissance occurred, centered on oil painting technique and meticulous observation of the natural world rather than classical antiquity.
Masaccio died at 27, but his work in the Brancacci Chapel and at Santa Maria Novella fundamentally changed painting. The Tribute Money (c. 1425) in the Brancacci Chapel uses a single light source and consistent atmospheric depth, making the figures feel like they occupy real space. The Expulsion from Paradise (c. 1425) shows Adam and Eve with bodies that have weight and mass, modeled with chiaroscuro rather than the flat outlines of medieval painting. A 2023 geophysical study of the Brancacci Chapel, published in the journal Remote Sensing, used non-invasive imaging to analyze the wall structure and mortar stratigraphy behind Masaccio's frescoes, helping conservators understand the causes of paint detachment. Botticelli synthesized classical subject matter with Florentine linear elegance. The Birth of Venus (c. 1485, Uffizi) depicts the goddess standing on a shell, drawn from classical mythology rather than Christian scripture. The Primavera (c. 1480, Uffizi) assembles mythological figures in an orange grove, their flowing drapery and elongated proportions reflecting Botticelli's preference for line over modeled form. In June 2026, the Uffizi unveiled new permanent galleries where The Birth of Venus and Primavera face each other directly for the first time, creating a dialogue between the two most famous images of the Italian Renaissance. Leonardo is the archetype of the Renaissance artist as polymath. He painted, engineered, dissected bodies, designed flying machines, and studied optics, geology, and botany. The Last Supper (1495-1498, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan) uses perspective to draw the eye toward Christ's head at the vanishing point, while the psychological reactions of the apostles create a narrative frozen in time. The Mona Lisa (c. 1503-1519, Louvre) demonstrates sfumato, the gradual blending of tones with no visible brushwork or hard edges. Michelangelo considered himself a sculptor, not a painter, but his work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling (1508-1512) is the most influential painted surface in Western art. The Last Judgment (1536-1541) on the altar wall is darker, more twisted, and more violent, reflecting both the Sack of Rome (1527) and Michelangelo's own spiritual crisis. Raphael synthesized the achievements of Leonardo and Michelangelo into a style of balance, clarity, and grace. The School of Athens (1509-1511, Vatican Stanza della Segnatura) depicts Plato and Aristotle at the center of a vast architectural space, with philosophers arranged around them in groups. The composition uses perspective, gesture, and architectural framing to organize dozens of figures into a coherent whole. A 2026 study published in ACS Omega analyzed Raphael's Christ Blessing (1505-1506, Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, Brescia) and discovered a freehand underdrawing executed with a pointed tool, plus a rare early use of Egyptian blue in the background. Durer brought Renaissance principles to Northern Europe. His engravings, including Melencolia I (1514) and Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513), combined Italian perspective and proportion with the meticulous detail of Northern European oil painting. Durer's self-portrait of 1500 (Alte Pinakothek, Munich) presents the artist in a pose traditionally reserved for Christ, a declaration of artistic self-consciousness that would have been unthinkable a century earlier.
Titian defined Venetian Renaissance painting through color. His Assumption of the Virgin (1516-1518, Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, Venice) uses a towering composition with a glowing red-orange at its center that seems to radiate light into the church. Bacchus and Ariadne (1520-1523, National Gallery, London) builds its blue sky from multiple glazes of ultramarine over a white underlayer. The Early Renaissance was centered in Florence and driven by the Medici family and the guild system. The High Renaissance lasted roughly 35 years and produced the works most people think of when they hear the word "Renaissance." Leonardo's Last Supper and Mona Lisa, Michelangelo's Sistine ceiling and David, and Raphael's School of Athens and Sistine Madonna were all created in this brief window. After the Sack of Rome, artists like Pontormo, Bronzino, and El Greco pushed Renaissance principles past the point of classical balance into distortion, elongation, and artificiality. Mannerism is the bridge between the Renaissance and the Baroque, and it rejected the harmony that Leonardo and Raphael had achieved in favor of subjective, expressive exaggeration.
Renaissance paintings share several visual characteristics that distinguish them from both medieval and Baroque work. Look for a single vanishing point, usually at eye level, with architectural elements or floor tiles receding toward it. Figures are modeled with light and shadow to create volume, not outlined in the flat medieval style. Bodies are anatomically correct, often based on dissection and study of classical sculpture. Drapery falls with weight and obeys gravity.
Subjects include classical mythology (Venus, Bacchus, Apollo) alongside Christian themes, and portraits that show real individuals with specific facial features rather than generalized types. Compositions are balanced and symmetrical, with figures arranged in stable geometric groupings. The overall effect is one of order, proportion, and controlled space.
To see the difference in person, compare a medieval altarpiece with a Renaissance painting in the same museum. The National Gallery in London has both: walk from the Sainsbury Wing (medieval) to the West Wing (Renaissance) and the shift is immediate. Figures go from flat and frontal to three-dimensional and psychologically present. Space goes from gold-leaf backgrounds to architectural interiors with real depth.
The Renaissance established the visual vocabulary that Western art used for the next 500 years. Linear perspective remained the standard system for depicting space until Cezanne and Cubism challenged it in the early 20th century. The academic study of anatomy, the workshop system, the concept of the artist as an individual genius rather than an anonymous craftsman, and the practice of signing works all date from this period. The Renaissance also created the idea of "progress" in art: that each generation builds on and surpasses the last, a notion that drove Western art history until the modern era.
The Renaissance also shaped how we think about art education. The Florentine workshop model, where apprentices learned by copying masters and grinding pigments before being allowed to paint, evolved into the academic system that dominated European art education until the 19th century. The emphasis on drawing from life and studying classical sculpture became the foundation of academic training.
The Renaissance is best experienced in the places where it was made. In Florence, the Uffizi Galleries hold Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera, now displayed facing each other in newly renovated galleries opened in June 2026. The Accademia Gallery has Michelangelo's David. Santa Maria Novella has Masaccio's Holy Trinity, freshly conserved. In Rome, the Vatican Museums contain the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Stanze. Outside Italy, the National Gallery in London has the best collection of Renaissance paintings in a single building, including works by Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian, and Botticelli.
