Suprematism: Pure Geometric Abstraction and the Supremacy of Feeling (1913-1930s)

In December 1915, Kazimir Malevich hung a painting in the corner of a gallery in Petrograd. The painting was a black square on a white field. The corner was the sacred corner, the place where Russian Orthodox families hang their icons. Malevich had replaced the Virgin with a geometric shape. The painting was called Black Square, and it was the most radical thing anyone had put on a wall in the history of Western art. A hundred and ten years later, the Guggenheim Museum still calls it one of the defining works of Modernism, a painting that sits on a par with Duchamp's readymade as a game-changing moment in twentieth-century art.

Suprematism was an abstract art movement founded by Malevich in 1913 in Russia. It reduced painting to its most basic elements: geometric shapes, flat color, and the white ground of the canvas. The name came from the Latin "supremus," meaning the highest or the supreme. Malevich wanted the supremacy of pure artistic feeling over the depiction of visible reality. No trees, no faces, no landscapes, no narrative. Just a square, a circle, a cross, a rectangle, floating in white space.

What Is Suprematism?

Suprematism is non-objective art. That means it does not represent anything in the visible world. A Suprematist painting is not a picture of something. It is the thing itself: paint on canvas, arranged in geometric forms. Malevich wrote in his 1927 treatise The Non-Objective World that art should be freed from the "dead weight of the real world." He believed that representation was a burden that painting had carried for centuries, and that true artistic feeling could only emerge when the artist stopped trying to copy nature.

The visual vocabulary of Suprematism is narrow on purpose. Squares, circles, crosses, rectangles, and lines. The colors are limited: black, white, primary red, blue, yellow, and a few secondary tones. The shapes float on a white background that Malevich called "the infinite white void." There is no perspective, no depth, no modeling, no shading. The shapes are flat. The white ground is not a backdrop. It is an active space in which the shapes exist and move.

Historical Context and Origins

Suprematism emerged in Russia between 1913 and 1915, during a period of extraordinary artistic experimentation. Russian artists had absorbed the lessons of Cubism and Futurism, but Malevich pushed further than either. His 1913 opera designs for Victory Over the Sun, a Futurist production with music by Mikhail Matiushin and a libretto by Alexei Kruchenykh, featured costumes and backdrops of pure geometric shapes. The sets used black squares, white circles, and colored rectangles with no reference to the plot or characters. This was the first time Malevich painted non-objective forms, and the experience led directly to the development of Suprematism.

The movement was publicly launched at the "Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings 0,10" in December 1915 at the Dobychina Art Bureau in Petrograd. The exhibition's enigmatic title, "0,10," referred to the idea of a new beginning: zero, the starting point, and ten, the number of artists who were originally scheduled to participate (though fourteen ultimately showed). Malevich exhibited thirty-six Suprematist paintings, including Black Square, which he placed in the upper corner of the room, where Russian Orthodox icons traditionally hang. In 2025, the 110th anniversary of the 0,10 exhibition was marked by several events. Key Artists and Pioneers

Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935)

Malevich is the inventor and sole theorist of Suprematism. Born in Kyiv to a Polish family, he moved to Moscow and absorbed Cubism and Futurism before developing his own system. Black Square (1915, State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow) is the movement's founding work. Suprematist Composition: White on White (1918, Museum of Modern Art, New York) pushes the logic to its endpoint: a white square painted in a slightly different white on a white ground. The painting is about the minimum difference that vision can register. Supremus No. 56 (1916, Russian Museum, St. Petersburg) shows the more typical Suprematist composition: colored rectangles and squares floating at angles in white space. El Lissitzky (1890-1941)

Lazar Markovich Lissitzky, known as El Lissitzky, was Malevich's most important follower and the person who carried Suprematism beyond painting into architecture, typography, and design. His Proun series (1919-1927), an acronym for "Project for the Affirmation of the New," applied Suprematist geometry to architectural space. Proun 1 E (1919) and Proun 99 (1924) use the same floating squares and lines as Malevich's paintings, but they imply three-dimensional space and structural engineering. Lissitzky's work bridged Suprematism and Constructivism, the movement that absorbed Suprematism in the 1920s by redirecting abstraction toward practical design and propaganda.

Olga Rozanova (1886-1918)

Rozanova was one of the most original Suprematist painters. Her Color Painting series (1917-1918) pushed Suprematism toward pure color sensation, using bars and stripes of vivid pigment that prefigure the color field painting of the 1950s. Rozanova died in the 1918 influenza pandemic at age 32, cutting short a career that might have rivaled Malevich's. Her work is held in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

Ivan Kliun (1873-1943)

Kliun was an early convert to Suprematism who exhibited in the 0,10 show. His Suprematist Painting (1916-1917) uses the same geometric vocabulary as Malevich but with a different sensibility, favoring warmer colors and more compact compositions. Kliun later distanced himself from Suprematism and returned to a more figurative style, reflecting the pressure that Soviet cultural policy placed on abstract artists in the 1920s.

Aleksandra Ekster (1882-1949)

Ekster was a Ukrainian painter who bridged Suprematism and Constructivism. She exhibited in the 0,10 show and produced Suprematist works that incorporated more dynamic, rotating forms than Malevich's austere compositions. Her work in theater design and book illustration extended Suprematist geometry into applied arts.

Phases and Evolution

Suprematism had three phases. The first, from 1913 to 1916, is the "black phase," dominated by Black Square and works using black shapes on white grounds. The second, from 1916 to 1918, is the "color phase," in which Malevich introduced primary colors and more complex compositions of overlapping rectangles and circles. Suprematist Painting (with Black Trapezoid and Red Square) (1915) and Supremus No. 55 (1916) belong to this period. The third, from 1918 to the early 1920s, is the "white phase," culminating in White on White (1918), where the painting approaches the threshold of invisibility.

By the mid-1920s, Suprematism was under political pressure. The Soviet state favored Socialist Realism and viewed abstract art with suspicion. Malevich was arrested in 1930 and interrogated by the secret police. He was released but forced to abandon abstraction. His late paintings from the early 1930s, like Self-Portrait (1933, Russian Museum), show a return to figurative painting, though the figures are rendered with a stiffness and abstraction that betrays his Suprematist roots. Malevich died in 1935, and his Suprematist works were hidden from public view for decades. Legacy and Influence

Suprematism's influence on twentieth-century art was enormous despite its short active period. El Lissitzky's Proun works connected Suprematism to Constructivism and to the Bauhaus, where Lissitzky lectured in the 1920s. The floating geometric forms of Suprematism influenced De Stijl, the Dutch movement led by Piet Mondrian that pursued a similar reduction to primary colors and straight lines. The white-on-white paintings of the 1950s and 1960s, from Robert Rauschenberg's White Paintings (1951) to the monochromes of Yves Klein, owe a direct debt to Malevich's white phase.

The reduction of painting to its barest elements also paved the way for Minimalism in the 1960s. Frank Stella's Black Paintings (1958-1960), which reduced painting to concentric black stripes on white canvas, are a direct descendant of Black Square. The San Diego Museum of Art's 2025 exhibition "American Minimal" paid tribute to this lineage, noting that Minimalism began when Stella exhibited his Black Paintings at MoMA in 1959, a gesture that echoed Malevich's radical reduction half a century earlier.
