On February 20, 1909, the front page of Le Figaro in Paris carried a manifesto. It was written by an Italian poet named Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, and it declared that a new movement had been born. "We want to hymn the man at the wheel, who hurls the lance of his spirit across the Earth along the circuit of its orbit," Marinetti wrote. He called the movement Futurism, and he said it would destroy museums, libraries, and academies, and "free this land from its gangrene of professors, archaeologists, cicerones, and antiquarians." The manifesto was a performance, a provocation, and a declaration of war against the entire history of art. It was also the first time an art movement had been launched by a manifesto rather than by a group of paintings.
Futurism is an Italian avant-garde movement that celebrated speed, technology, youth, and violence, and sought to destroy the cultural past to make way for the modern future. It was founded by Marinetti in 1909 and lasted until his death in 1944. Futurist painters adapted the fragmented forms of Cubism to depict motion and dynamism, producing images of speeding trains, dancing legs, and whirling propellers. The movement encompassed painting, sculpture, architecture, music, literature, film, fashion, and design, making it one of the first attempts to merge art and life across all disciplines.

Futurism is built on a single idea: that modern life, defined by speed and machines, requires a new art. Marinetti argued that the traditional subjects of painting, landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and religious scenes, were obsolete in an age of automobiles, airplanes, and factories. The new art should depict dynamism, the sensation of movement and change that defined modern experience.
In painting, the Futurists adapted Cubist fragmentation to represent motion. Where Cubism broke objects into facets to show multiple viewpoints, Futurism broke objects into facets to show multiple moments in time, superimposed on a single canvas. A dog's legs multiply into a blur of movement. A speeding train is shown as a series of overlapping forms rushing through space. The technique is called "lines of force," and it was developed by Giacomo Balla and Umberto Boccioni. The Futurists also used bright, saturated color, in contrast to the muted palette of Analytic Cubism.
A 2024 study published in Art Vision analyzed Boccioni's artworks, focusing on the theme of the deconstruction and reconstruction of subjectivity through speed and movement. Futurism was born in Italy, a country that in 1909 was a young nation with an old cultural heritage. Italy had been unified only in 1861, and its art world was dominated by Renaissance and Baroque traditions. Marinetti, who was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to an Italian family and educated in Paris, saw this heritage as a burden. His manifesto was a declaration of independence from Italy's past.
The founding manifesto was published in Le Figaro in 1909, but Marinetti had been developing his ideas for years. He had published a literary magazine called Poesia since 1905, and his own poetry experimented with typography and syntax in ways that prefigured Futurist visual language. After the 1909 manifesto, Marinetti recruited painters, sculptors, architects, and musicians to join the movement. The painters published their own manifesto, the Technical Manifesto of Futurist Painting, in 1910, signed by Boccioni, Balla, Carlo Carra, Luigi Russolo, and Gino Severini.
The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome mounted a major Futurism exhibition in 2024-2025 called Il Tempo del Futurismo, marking the 80th anniversary of Marinetti's death. The exhibition displayed 350 works and examined the relationship between Futurist art and the scientific and technological innovations of the period, including automobiles, motorcycles, and early radio. Boccioni was the most talented and theoretically sophisticated of the Futurist painters. His The City Rises (1910, Museum of Modern Art, New York) shows a construction site with horses and workers in a swirl of motion, using the lines of force technique to convey the energy of modern urban development. His Unique Forms of Continuity in Space (1913, Tate, London, and Museu de Arte Contemporanea, Sao Paulo) is the most famous Futurist sculpture, showing a striding figure whose body dissolves into aerodynamic forms as if sculpted by the wind of its own motion. Boccioni was killed in a horse-riding accident during World War I in 1916, at the age of 33.
Balla was the oldest of the Futurist painters and the most systematic in his approach to depicting motion. His Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash (1912, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo) shows a dachshund with dozens of legs, its leash a blur of repeated forms, capturing the visual experience of seeing a small dog in rapid motion. His Abstract Speed and Sound (1913-1914, Guggenheim, New York) shows a speeding automobile as a series of intersecting diagonal forms. Balla later moved toward pure abstraction, producing his Compenetrazioni iridescenti series, which some scholars argue preceded Kandinsky's abstraction.
Carra's The Funeral of the Anarchist Galli (1910-1911, Museum of Modern Art, New York) shows a riot scene with violent, intersecting diagonals of motion. The painting captures the chaos of a funeral that turned into a clash between anarchists and police. Carra's use of Cubist fragmentation combined with Futurist dynamism creates a painting that is both political and formally radical. After World War I, Carra moved away from Futurism toward the metaphysical painting of Giorgio de Chirico.
Severini lived in Paris and was the Futurist most directly connected to the French avant-garde. His Armored Train in Action (1915, Tate, London) shows a cannon firing from a train, with the geometric forms of Cubism applied to a modern weapon. Severini's work bridges Futurism and Cubism, showing how the two movements shared techniques but applied them to different purposes.
Russolo was both a painter and a musician. His The Revolt (1911, Haags Gemeentemuseum, The Hague) shows a crowd surging forward in a wave of motion. Russolo is better known for his 1913 manifesto The Art of Noises, which argued that the sounds of the industrial age, engines, trains, factories, should be the basis of a new music. He built instruments called intonarumori, noise machines that produced the sounds of modern life, and performed concerts of noise music in Italy and London.
Futurism's first phase runs from 1909 to 1915, the heroic period of painting and sculpture. This is when the defining works were produced: Boccioni's The City Rises, Balla's Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash, Carra's The Funeral of the Anarchist Galli. World War I interrupted the movement. Several Futurists volunteered for military service, seeing war as the ultimate expression of the modern machine age. Boccioni was killed in 1916.
The second phase, from 1918 to the 1930s, is sometimes called "second Futurism." The movement expanded into architecture, design, and aeroplittura (airplane painting), a sub-movement that depicted the world from the perspective of flight. Fortunato Depero and Enrico Prampolini produced designs for furniture, textiles, and advertising. The movement became increasingly aligned with the Fascist regime, which came to power in 1922 under Benito Mussolini. Marinetti was an early supporter of Mussolini and was awarded a seat in the Italian Academy by the Fascist government.
The relationship between Futurism and fascism is one of the most debated aspects of the movement. Marinetti's manifesto glorified violence and war, and the movement's celebration of speed, machines, and national greatness aligned naturally with fascist ideology. However, some Futurists were not fascists, and the movement's aesthetic innovations were independent of its political commitments. Futurism's influence is visible in every movement that celebrated the machine age, from Constructivism to Art Deco to the streamlining of 1930s industrial design. The Futurist technique of showing motion through superimposed forms influenced animation, comic books, and film. The Futurist idea that art should encompass all aspects of life, from painting to clothing to architecture, anticipated the total-design ambitions of the Bauhaus and later design movements.
Futurism is closely related to Cubism, which provided the formal techniques that the Futurists adapted to depict motion. It overlaps with Constructivism, which shared the Futurist celebration of the machine but redirected it toward social purposes. The Futurist interest in the machine age also connects to Art Deco, which incorporated Futurist dynamism into decorative design.
