Cubism: The Movement That Shattered Perspective (1907-1925)

In 1907, Pablo Picasso painted a picture of five women in a brothel. He called it Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. The women's bodies are broken into sharp planes. Their faces are masks. The space around them is compressed and fractured. Picasso kept the painting in his studio for years, rolled up and rarely shown, because even he was not sure what he had done. What he had done was break perspective, the system that had organized Western painting since the Renaissance. What Is Cubism and How Does It Work?

Cubism begins with a rejection of perspective. Renaissance perspective creates the illusion of depth by making objects appear smaller as they recede from the viewer, with parallel lines converging at a vanishing point. This system assumes a single, fixed viewer looking through a window at a scene. Cubism rejects that assumption. It says that a subject is not a single view but the sum of all views, and that painting should represent the process of seeing rather than a frozen moment of seeing.

In Analytic Cubism, the artist breaks the subject into small, overlapping facets, each representing a different viewpoint. The facets are painted in muted tones of brown, gray, and ochre, so the viewer focuses on form rather than color. Historical Context and Origins

Cubism emerged in Paris in the first decade of the 20th century. The immediate precursors were Paul Cezanne's late landscapes, which reduced nature to geometric forms, and African masks and sculptures, which Picasso saw at the Trocadero ethnographic museum in Paris in 1907. Cezanne's influence is visible in Braque's Houses at L'Estaque (1908, Kunstmuseum Bern), the painting that gave Cubism its name. When Braque submitted the painting to the Salon d'Automne, the jury rejected it. Henri Matisse, who was on the jury, reportedly said the painting was made of "little cubes." Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)

Picasso was the driving force of Cubism. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907, Museum of Modern Art, New York) is the proto-Cubist work, though it was painted before Cubism was fully developed. The painting shows five female figures whose bodies are broken into angular planes and whose faces are influenced by African masks. Picasso's Ma Jolie (1911-1912, MoMA) is a quintessential Analytic Cubist work, showing a woman with a guitar so fragmented that the subject is barely recognizable. Gris described his method as starting with abstract forms and building toward the subject, the reverse of Picasso and Braque's approach of starting with the subject and breaking it down. Fernand Leger (1881-1955)

Leger developed a variant of Cubism that used bold, primary colors and cylindrical forms, sometimes called "Tubism." Leger's version of Cubism was more colorful and more celebratory of the machine age than the work of Picasso and Braque.

Robert Delaunay (1885-1941)

Delaunay developed a color-driven variant of Cubism that Apollinaire called Orphism. His Simultaneous Windows (1912, Hamburger Kunsthalle) uses the Cubist fragmentation of form but fills it with pure, bright color, combining Cubist structure with Fauvist saturation.

Phases and Evolution

Cubism is divided into two main phases. Analytic Cubism (1908-1912) is characterized by the breakdown of subjects into small, overlapping facets, muted color, and dense, complex compositions. The paintings of this period are difficult to read, requiring the viewer to reconstruct the subject from fragments. Synthetic Cubism (1912-1914) reverses the process. Instead of breaking down, the artist builds up. Collage materials are introduced, color returns, and the compositions are more open and legible. Cubism is arguably the most influential art movement of the 20th century. Futurism adopted Cubist fragmentation to depict motion. Constructivism adapted Cubist geometry to social purposes. Fauvism and Cubism together established the two axes of modern painting: color and form.
