Rene Magritte painted a picture of a pipe. Underneath it, he wrote: "Ceci n'est pas une pipe." This is not a pipe. The statement is obviously true and obviously maddening. Of course it is not a pipe. It is a painting of a pipe. But if it is not a pipe, what is it doing in a painting? And if it is a painting of a pipe, why does the label say it is not? Magritte called the painting The Treachery of Images (1929, Los Angeles County Museum of Art), and it is one of the most famous Surrealist works ever made. It does what Surrealism does: it takes something familiar and makes it strange, forcing the viewer to question the relationship between reality, representation, and language.
Surrealism is an art and literary movement that sought to liberate the human imagination by accessing the unconscious mind. Founded by Andre Breton in Paris in 1924, it drew on the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud to explore dreams, automatic writing, chance, and the irrational. What Is Surrealism?
Breton defined Surrealism in the first Manifesto of Surrealism, published in 1924, as "psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express the real functioning of thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern." In simpler terms, Surrealism is a method of creating art by bypassing the conscious mind and accessing the unconscious directly. The Surrealists believed that the rational mind, which had produced World War I, was not to be trusted, and that the irrational, the dream, and the unconscious held truths that reason could not reach.
In painting, Surrealism took two main forms. The first is veristic or illusionistic Surrealism, practiced by Salvador Dali and Magritte, in which impossible scenes are painted with photographic precision. The impossible is made to look real, which makes the real look impossible. The second is automatic or abstract Surrealism, practiced by Joan Miro and Andre Masson, in which the artist allows the hand to move without conscious control, producing spontaneous marks that are then developed into images. Both approaches share the goal of accessing the unconscious, but they use opposite methods: one through extreme control, the other through the abandonment of control.

Historical Context and Origins
Surrealism grew out of Dada. Breton had participated in Paris Dada but found Dada's pure negativity unsatisfying. He wanted a movement that destroyed in order to build, not just to destroy. The key intellectual influence was Sigmund Freud, whose theories of the unconscious, dreams, and repression provided the Surrealists with both a method and a justification. Breton had studied medicine and had worked in psychiatric wards during World War I, where he observed Freud's methods firsthand.
The first Manifesto of Surrealism was published in October 1924. It was followed by a second manifesto in 1929. Breton remained the leader of the movement until his death in 1966, and he was notorious for expelling members who deviated from his vision. He expelled Dali in 1934 for his fascination with Hitler, and he had a complicated relationship with Magritte and the Belgian Surrealists, who maintained a degree of independence.
The Art Gallery of New South Wales mounted a major Magritte exhibition marking the centennial of the first Surrealist Manifesto. Key Artists and Pioneers
Salvador Dali (1904-1989)
Dali was the most famous Surrealist and the most technically gifted. His The Persistence of Memory (1931, Museum of Modern Art, New York) shows melting clocks draped over a landscape, with a distorted self-portrait in the center. Dali called his method "paranoiac-critical activity," a technique of deliberately cultivating paranoid delusions to generate images. His Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War) (1936, Philadelphia Museum of Art) shows a monstrous dismembered figure grasping itself against a Spanish landscape, painted as a premonition of the Spanish Civil War. Dali was expelled from the Surrealist group by Breton in 1934, but his work remains the public face of the movement.
Rene Magritte (1898-1967)
Magritte was the philosopher of Surrealism. His The Treachery of Images (1929, LACMA), The Human Condition (1933, National Gallery of Art, Washington), and The Son of Man (1964, private collection) use meticulously painted familiar objects in unexpected combinations to raise questions about perception, representation, and language. His The Elephant Celebes (1921, Tate, London) shows a boiler-like machine transformed into an elephant, combining Dada assemblage with Surrealist dream imagery. Joan Miro (1893-1983)
Miro represented the automatic wing of Surrealism. His The Carnival of Harlequin (1924-1925, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo) shows a densely packed composition of biomorphic shapes, insects, and creatures that seem to have emerged from automatic drawing. Miro's work is playful and lyrical, in contrast to the dark precision of Dali. His improvisational practices stimulated what Breton called "lyrical divagations."
Leonora Carrington (1917-2011)
Carrington was a British-born Surrealist who moved to Mexico and developed a personal mythology drawn from Celtic folklore, alchemy, and Mexican culture. Her The Inn of the Dawn Horse (1937-1938, Leeds Art Gallery) shows a white horse in a room with a rocking horse and a hyena, combining personal symbolism with dream logic. A 2025 PhD thesis from Lancaster University examined the role of women in Surrealism, arguing that mythological imagery in women's Surrealism functioned as a response to marginalization from the mainstream movement. Phases and Evolution
Surrealism's first phase runs from 1924 to 1939, centered in Paris. This is the period of the manifestos, the group exhibitions, and the defining paintings by Dali, Magritte, Ernst, and Miro. The second phase runs from 1940 to 1966, during which World War II scattered the Surrealists across the globe. Breton went to New York, where he organized exhibitions and publications. Max Ernst went to Arizona with the collector Peggy Guggenheim. Carrington went to Mexico. Claude Cahun stayed in France and was sent to a Nazi internment camp on the Channel Islands for resistance activities.
The Lenbachhaus in Munich mounted a 2025 exhibition called Live Here? No Thanks: Surrealism and Anti-fascism, which traced the Surrealists' political activism, particularly their resistance to colonialism and fascism. Surrealism's influence extends far beyond fine art. The word "surreal" has entered everyday language as an adjective for anything strange or unexpected. Surrealist imagery influenced advertising, film, fashion, and popular culture. Directors like Luis Bunuel, David Lynch, and Alfred Hitchcock drew on Surrealist techniques. The Abstract Expressionists, particularly Arshile Gorky and Robert Motherwell, were directly influenced by Surrealist automatism. The idea that art can access the unconscious and that the irrational is a valid subject for serious art is a Surrealist legacy that permeates contemporary culture.
Surrealism grew directly out of Dadaism, which provided the anti-establishment attitude that Surrealism redirected toward the unconscious. It is related to Expressionism, which also prioritized inner experience over outer reality, though Expressionism used distortion while Surrealism used impossible combinations.
