In 1959, a twenty-three-year-old painter named Frank Stella exhibited a group of paintings at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The paintings were black. Not black with something in them, not black with a figure or a landscape or a gesture hidden underneath. Black enamel house paint, poured in even bands, separated by thin white lines of bare canvas, in concentric rectangles that repeated from the edge of the canvas toward the center. A painter named Larry Rivers asked Stella what the paintings were about. Stella said: "What you see is what you see." That sentence became the unofficial motto of Minimalism, the movement that took art apart and put it back together with nothing left but the physical object and the space around it.
Minimalism was an art movement that emerged in New York in the early 1960s and peaked in the late 1960s and 1970s. Minimalist artists produced works made of simple geometric forms, industrial materials, and repeated units. They rejected the emotional intensity and visible brushwork of Abstract Expressionism in favor of works that presented themselves as objects in space, with no attempt to express the artist's inner state or to refer to anything beyond their own physical properties. The movement is also called "literal art," "ABC art," or "primary structures," a term derived from the 1966 exhibition at the Jewish Museum that introduced the style to a wider public.

What Is Minimalism?
Minimalism is art that reduces its means to the fewest possible elements and presents the result as a physical object rather than a representation or an expression. A Minimalist work is typically made of industrial materials: aluminum, steel, Plexiglas, fluorescent tubes, lead, plywood. It is geometric in form: squares, rectangles, cubes, grids, lines. It is often modular, composed of repeated identical units. It is fabricated rather than handcrafted: many Minimalist artists sent specifications to industrial shops and never touched the finished object themselves.
Donald Judd, the movement's most articulate theorist, laid out the Minimalist position in his 1965 essay "Specific Objects." Judd argued that painting was exhausted as a medium because the rectangular canvas always carried the baggage of illusionism: even an abstract painting creates the illusion of space behind the surface. He wanted works that occupied real space the way a chair or a table does, without pretending to be anything other than what they are. Judd called these works "specific objects," neither painting nor sculpture but something that occupied the space between.
The San Diego Museum of Art's 2025 exhibition "American Minimal" described the movement as "both an extension and a rejection of Abstract Expressionism, furthering its commitment to nonrepresentation, while also moving away from broad gestures and brushstrokes to remove any trace of the hand of the artist." Historical Context and Origins
Minimalism emerged in New York in the late 1950s and early 1960s as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism. The Abstract Expressionists had made the artist's gesture the subject of the painting: Pollock's drips, de Kooning's slashes, Kline's black bars were all records of physical action. The Minimalists rejected this. They did not want their work to be about themselves. They wanted it to be about the object, the material, and the space.
Stella's Black Paintings (1958-1960) were the starting point. Painted in his studio on Wall Street, they used commercial black enamel paint and house-painter's brushes, materials associated with construction rather than fine art. The concentric rectangles were generated by the shape of the canvas: the width of the bands was determined by the width of the paintbrush, and the pattern repeated inward until the center was reached. There was no composition in the traditional sense. The painting was the result of a procedure, not a decision.
Stella later moved beyond Minimalism, developing shaped canvases, protractor paintings, and eventually monumental sculptural reliefs that were anything but minimal. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint-Etienne in France presents "Frank Stella: Minimal / Maximal" from June 27, 2026, through January 3, 2027, the first comprehensive Stella retrospective in France since the 1980s. Key Artists and Pioneers
Donald Judd (1928-1994)
Judd was the movement's theorist and its most uncompromising practitioner. His "stacks" are vertical columns of identical wall-mounted boxes, usually made of Plexiglas and aluminum, spaced at equal intervals from floor to ceiling. Untitled (Stack) (1967, various collections) consists of ten units, each a shallow open box, with the space between each unit equal to the height of the unit itself. The result is that the wall and the room become part of the work. Judd also made "progressions," wall-mounted pieces in which the intervals between units follow a mathematical sequence. In 1993, Judd wrote that "material, space, and color are the main aspects of visual art," a statement that summarizes the Minimalist credo. Frank Stella (1936-2024)
Stella's Black Paintings were the catalyst for Minimalism, though he did not remain a Minimalist for long. After the Black Paintings, he produced the Aluminum Paintings (1960), shaped canvases with notched edges, and the Copper Paintings (1960-1961). His later Protractor series (1967-1968) used interlocking circles and arcs in brilliant color, and his work from the 1970s onward became increasingly three-dimensional and exuberant. Stella's trajectory from Minimalism to maximalism is itself a defining story of American abstraction. The Mnuchin Gallery's 2024-2025 homage exhibition included Arbeit Macht Frei (1958), a Black Painting whose title quotes the entrance of Auschwitz, and Star with square tubing (2016), a late sculptural work that echoes the star-shaped compositions of Port Tampa City (1963).
Dan Flavin (1933-1996)
Flavin made art from commercially available fluorescent light tubes. His Diagonal of May 25, 1963 (1963, Museum of Modern Art, New York) is a single yellow fluorescent tube mounted at a forty-five-degree angle on the wall. That was it. The work was the light, the fixture, and the electrical connection. Flavin later created room-filling installations using multiple tubes in different colors, transforming gallery spaces into environments of colored light. The David Zwirner 2026 exhibition includes Flavin's three fluorescent tubes (1963), his first work to incorporate more than one lamp and his first multi-colored construction using light.
Carl Andre (b. 1935)
Andre made sculpture from industrial materials laid directly on the floor. Equivalent VIII (1966, Tate) consists of 120 firebricks arranged in a low, flat rectangle. The work became notorious in 1976 when the Tate acquired it and the British press attacked the museum for spending public money on a pile of bricks. Andre's point was that the bricks were the sculpture: their weight, their material, their arrangement on the floor, and the viewer's physical relationship to them as objects to walk around and on. His metal floor pieces, like 144 Magnesium Square (1969, Museum of Modern Art), are plates of metal arranged in a grid that the viewer can walk on, making the sculpture a surface rather than an object.
Sol LeWitt (1928-2007)
LeWitt bridged Minimalism and Conceptual Art. His wall drawings are executed from written instructions: the artist provides a set of rules, and trained assistants or museum staff carry them out directly on the wall. Wall Drawing #1136 (2004, various collections) uses arcs of colored bands drawn directly on the wall. The work is not the drawing itself but the instructions that generate it, which means the same work can be installed in different locations by different people. LeWitt's modular cube structures, made of white painted wood, are pure Minimalism: grids of identical units that demonstrate the principle of repetition.
Agnes Martin (1912-2004)
Martin's paintings look Minimalist but feel different. Her Untitled series from the 1960s consists of subtle grids drawn in pencil on white or pale-colored canvases, so faint that they are almost invisible. Martin insisted that her work was about happiness and beauty, not reduction. She left New York in 1967 and moved to New Mexico, where she painted alone for the rest of her life. Her work occupies a border territory between Minimalism's formal reduction and a personal, almost spiritual vision that aligns more closely with Abstract Expressionism.
How to Spot Minimalism in a Museum
Look for industrial materials. If the artwork is made of Plexiglas, aluminum, steel, fluorescent tubes, firebricks, or galvanized metal, and it is geometric in form, it is likely Minimalist. The materials are not transformed by the artist. They are the same materials you would find in a hardware store or a construction site. The point is that they are ordinary, and the artwork does not pretend otherwise.
Look for repetition. Minimalist works often use identical units repeated in a series: Judd's stacks, Andre's floor grids, LeWitt's cube structures. The repetition is not decorative. It is structural. It demonstrates that the work is governed by a system rather than by personal expression.
Look for the absence of the artist's hand. Minimalist surfaces are smooth, fabricated, and impersonal. There are no brushstrokes, no fingerprints, no evidence of manual manipulation. The work looks like it was made by a machine, even when it was not. This is the opposite of Abstract Expressionism, where the artist's gesture is the subject.
Finally, look at the space around the work. Minimalist art is designed to be encountered in a room. The space between the work and the wall, the space between the work and the viewer, the space between individual units, all of these are part of the work. Judd's stacks are as much about the wall they hang on and the floor they rise from as they are about the boxes themselves.
Legacy and Influence
Minimalism's influence extends far beyond the visual arts. In music, composers like Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley developed a Minimalist music based on repetition, gradual process, and simple harmonic materials. In design, Minimalism shaped the aesthetic of everything from furniture to architecture to consumer electronics. The "less is more" principle, borrowed from Mies van der Rohe but given new meaning by the Minimalists, became a dominant aesthetic of the late twentieth century.
In art, Minimalism's reduction of the object to its physical properties opened the door for Conceptual Art, which took the reduction one step further by eliminating the object entirely. The Light and Space movement in Southern California, including artists like James Turrell and Robert Irwin, extended Minimalism's concern with perception and space into immersive environments. Post-Minimalist artists like Eva Hesse and Richard Serra took Minimalism's industrial materials and reintroduced physical process and instability, producing works that were geometric but not pristine.
