Neo-Impressionism emerged from the crisis of Impressionism in the early 1880s. By 1886, Impressionism had achieved a degree of public acceptance, but several of its practitioners felt that its methods had reached a dead end. The spontaneous brushwork that had once seemed revolutionary had become formulaic.
