Edvard Munch wrote in his diary that he was walking along a road in Oslo one evening when the sky turned blood red. He stopped, leaned against a fence, and felt an infinite scream passing through nature. He painted that sensation. The Scream (1893) is not a painting of a person screaming. It is a painting of a person hearing a scream, and the difference matters. The sky is not red because it looked red. It is red because it felt red. That is the core of Expressionism: painting not what the eye sees but what the inner self experiences.
Expressionism is a style of art in which the artist distorts form, color, and space to express emotional or psychological states rather than visual reality. It emerged in Northern Europe in the early 20th century, primarily in Germany and Austria, and reached its peak between roughly 1905 and 1925. The movement was never a single group with a single manifesto. It was a constellation of artists and groups, including Die Brucke (The Bridge) in Dresden, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) in Munich, and individual artists like Munch and Kokoschka who worked outside any group. What united them was the conviction that art should express inner experience, not imitate outer appearance.

Expressionism reverses the traditional relationship between artist and subject. In academic painting, the artist observes the subject and records it faithfully. In Expressionism, the artist filters the subject through personal emotion, and the painting becomes a record of that emotional response. This means that color, line, form, and composition are all subject to distortion. A face can be elongated, a landscape can be reduced to jagged shapes, a color can be intensified beyond anything the eye perceives.
The word "Expressionism" was first used in this context by the German art critic Herwarth Walden in 1911, in his magazine Der Sturm. Walden used it to describe the new generation of artists who were breaking from Impressionism's optical precision toward a more subjective, emotionally charged approach. The term stuck, and by 1914 it was widely used to describe the work of the German avant-garde.
A 2026 study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry empirically examined Munch's self-portraits, measuring changes in contrast, color, fractal dimension, and productivity during critical periods in his life. The researchers found significant stylistic changes consistent with periods of psychopathology, supporting the conclusion that Munch's self-portraits reveal his state of mind. The study demonstrates what Expressionism has always claimed: that stylistic distortion in painting can be a direct expression of the artist's psychological condition. Expressionism did not appear from nowhere. Its roots go back to the late 19th century, when several artists began pushing painting away from optical accuracy toward subjective experience. Munch was the most important precursor. His work from the 1890s, including The Scream (1893), Madonna (1894-1895), and The Sick Child (1885-1886), used distorted form and non-natural color to express anxiety, desire, and grief. Munch's influence on the German Expressionists was direct and acknowledged. He exhibited in Germany repeatedly, and his work was well known to the artists who would form Die Brucke.
The Munch Museum in Oslo mounted a major exhibition in 2025 called Lifeblood: Edvard Munch, which juxtaposed 150 works by Munch with 150 objects from the history of medicine. The exhibition explored how Munch's intense lived experience of illness, both physical and mental, shaped his art. The immediate context for Expressionism was the rapid industrialization and urbanization of Germany in the early 20th century. Cities were growing at unprecedented speed. The population of Berlin doubled between 1890 and 1920. This produced a sense of alienation and dislocation that Expressionist artists captured in their depictions of city streets, crowded cafes, and anxious figures. The political instability of the period, culminating in World War I and the Weimar Republic, added to the sense of crisis that runs through Expressionist painting.
Die Brucke was founded in Dresden in 1905 by four architecture students: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Fritz Bleyl. The name was suggested by Schmidt-Rottluff, who said it symbolized a bridge from the old world to the new. The group adopted a raw, aggressive style of painting with jagged outlines, harsh colors, and deliberately crude brushwork. Kirchner was the most talented member. His Street, Berlin (1913, Museum of Modern Art, New York) shows Berlin pedestrians as elongated, angular figures with mask-like faces, capturing the alienation of urban life. His Self-Portrait as a Soldier (1915, Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin) shows the artist with his painting hand severed, a response to his brief military service in World War I.
The Yale University Art Gallery's 2024 exhibition Munch and Kirchner: Anxiety and Expression was the first to examine the prints of both artists side by side, foregrounding their struggles with mental health. Der Blaue Reiter was founded in Munich in 1911 by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. The name came from one of Kandinsky's paintings. The group was more philosophical and spiritual than Die Brucke, interested in the connections between art, music, and the spiritual. Kandinsky's Composition VII (1913, Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow) is one of the first fully abstract paintings in Western art, and it grew directly from his Expressionist conviction that color and form could express spiritual truths. Marc's The Large Blue Horses (1911, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis) uses non-natural blue for the horses, expressing a spiritual ideal rather than a visual fact. Marc was killed at the Battle of Verdun in 1916, ending his career at 36.
Munch is the godfather of Expressionism, though he was Norwegian and worked outside the German groups. His The Scream (1893, National Gallery of Norway, Oslo), The Dance of Life (1899-1900, National Gallery of Norway), and Puberty (1894-1895, National Gallery of Norway) established the emotional vocabulary that the German Expressionists would adopt and intensify. Munch's use of swirling lines, non-natural color, and psychologically charged subjects was the template for Expressionist painting.
Schiele was the most extreme of the Austrian Expressionists. A protege of Gustav Klimt, Schiele developed a style of figure painting that pushed distortion to its limits. His Seated Male Nude (Self-Portrait) (1910, Leopold Museum, Vienna) shows the artist's body twisted and angular, with gaunt limbs and a confrontational gaze. Schiele's portraits and self-portraits use jagged outlines, exposed flesh, and distorted poses to express psychological intensity. He died of Spanish flu in 1918 at the age of 28.
Kokoschka was the other major Austrian Expressionist. His The Tempest (Bride of the Wind) (1914, Kunstmuseum Basel) shows the artist and his lover Alma Mahler lying together in a swirling, turbulent composition. The painting is not a portrait but an emotional record of a relationship. Kokoschka's brushwork is agitated and restless, capturing psychological states rather than physical appearances.
Expressionism can be divided into several phases. The precursor phase runs from roughly 1890 to 1905, dominated by Munch's work in Norway. The Brucke phase runs from 1905 to 1913, centered in Dresden and then Berlin. The Blaue Reiter phase runs from 1911 to 1914, centered in Munich. World War I disrupted all of these groups. Marc was killed. Kirchner had a nervous breakdown. The war years produced some of the most intense Expressionist work, including Otto Dix's The Trench (1920-1923, destroyed) and George Grosz's The Funeral (1917, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart).
After the war, Expressionism evolved into what is sometimes called "classic Expressionism" or the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), a more restrained and politically engaged style practiced by Dix, Grosz, and Max Beckmann. By the mid-1920s, the original energy of Expressionism had dissipated, though its influence continued through Neo-Expressionism in the 1970s and 1980s.
The Nazi regime declared Expressionism "degenerate" and removed it from German museums. The 1937 Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) exhibition in Munich included works by Kirchner, Nolde, Barlach, and many other Expressionists. Kirchner took his own life in 1938. The suppression of Expressionism by the Nazis is itself a testament to the movement's power: art that expresses inner truth is dangerous to regimes that demand external conformity.
Expressionism's influence extends far beyond its brief peak. Abstract Expressionism in postwar America owes a direct debt to the Expressionist emphasis on inner experience and gestural paint application. Action painting, as practiced by Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, is a direct descendant of Kirchner's aggressive brushwork and Kandinsky's conviction that painting could express non-visual truths. Neo-Expressionism in the 1980s, led by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Georg Baselitz, and Anselm Kiefer, returned to the Expressionist vocabulary of distorted figures and raw paint.
Expressionism is closely related to Fauvism, which shared the Expressionist commitment to non-natural color but was less psychologically charged. It overlaps with Action painting, which extended Expressionist gestural painting into the postwar period. The Expressionist use of distorted form connects to impasto, as many Expressionists used thick paint to intensify the physical presence of their work.
