Stand close to Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and the painting dissolves. What Is Pointillism and How Does It Work?
Pointillism relies on a phenomenon called optical mixing, or melange optique. The critical difference from palette mixing is that optical mixing tends toward white and luminosity, while physical mixing of pigments tends toward black and dullness. The technique is related to but distinct from Divisionism. Divisionism is the broader color theory: the systematic separation of colors into individual strokes or patches for optical blending. Pointillism is the specific application of that theory using dots. Seurat preferred the term Divisionism, or his own coinage Chromoluminarism, and rejected "Pointillism" as a critical insult. Paul Signac, Seurat's chief disciple, also rejected the term as synonymous with Divisionism. But the label stuck, and today it is the most widely recognized name for the technique.

Origins and History
Pointillism emerged in Paris in 1886, when Seurat debuted A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte at the eighth and final Impressionist exhibition. The painting was a manifesto. Seurat had spent two years on it, producing dozens of preparatory studies in oil and conté crayon. Where the Impressionists had used broken brushwork to capture the fleeting effects of light, Seurat imposed scientific order. He studied Chevreul's De la loi du contraste simultane des couleurs (1839), Rood's Modern Chromatics (1879), and Charles Blanc's Grammaire des arts du dessin (1867). From these texts he derived a system: place complementary colors side by side in small dots, let the eye do the mixing, and achieve maximum luminosity.
The critic Felix Feneon coined the term Neo-Impressionism in 1886 to describe the work of Seurat, Signac, Camille Pissarro, and Pissarro's son Lucien. The movement spread quickly. By 1887, Belgian artists like Theo van Rysselberghe had adopted the technique after seeing it at the exhibition of Les XX in Brussels. Seurat died in 1891 at age 31, possibly from meningitis. Signac carried the movement forward, publishing the influential treatise D'Eugene Delacroix au Neo-Impressionnisme in 1899. By the early 1900s, Henri Matisse had experimented with Divisionism in Luxe, calme et volupte (1904), and Robert Delaunay and Jean Metzinger were painting in a Divisionist style with large squares of color that the critic Louis Chassevent called "cubes" in 1906, a term that Louis Vauxcelles would later borrow to baptize Cubism.

Georges Seurat (1859-1891)
Seurat is the inventor of pointillism. Camille Pissarro (1830-1903)
Pissarro was the only original Impressionist to adopt pointillism. He described it as "a new phase in the logical march of Impressionism." His View from My Window, Eragny (1886-1888, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford) and Woman in the Orchard show him applying Seurat's system to rural subjects. Pissarro eventually abandoned the technique because he found the rigid dot application too constraining for his temperament.
Theo van Rysselberghe (1862-1926)

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910)
Cross took pointillism to the south of France, painting radiant landscapes in Saint-Clair near Saint-Tropez. His Afternoon at Pardigon (c. 1895) and The Pine Tree at St. Tropez use larger, more decorative dots that opened the door to Fauvism. Matisse visited Cross in 1904 and was directly influenced by his use of saturated, divided color.
How to Spot Pointillism in a Painting
The diagnostic test is distance. Up close, a pointillist painting looks like a field of separate colored dots with no recognizable image. Step back, and the dots coalesce into forms. This shift between proximity and distance is the signature of the technique. No other painting method produces such a dramatic transformation based on viewing distance.
Look for complementary colors placed side by side rather than mixed. In La Grande Jatte, Seurat placed dots of orange next to dots of blue to create the illusion of neutral tones in the shadows. The grass is not green paint. It is dots of yellow and blue that the eye reads as green. The water is not a single blue. It is a mosaic of blues, oranges, violets, and whites that shimmer because the individual colors retain their identity even as they blend.

Alioune Diagne, a Senegalese painter, uses small calligraphic symbols instead of dots to build figurative depictions of Black communities. Indigenous Australian artist Daniel Boyd uses protruding dots of clear glue layered over oil paintings, connecting Gestalt psychology to the gaps in colonial history.
