In May 2017, a painting sold at Sotheby's in New York for $110.5 million. It was a skull painted on a canvas measuring six and a half feet tall, done in oil stick and spray paint on a background of raw, exposed canvas. The artist was Jean-Michel Basquiat. The painting was Untitled, dated 1982. The buyer was Yusaku Maezawa, a Japanese billionaire. It was the first work made after 1980 to clear $100 million at auction. Basquiat was 21 when he painted it. He died of a heroin overdose at 27 in 1988. In the eight years between his arrival on the New York art scene and his death, he became the defining painter of the 1980s and the artist most associated with Neo-Expressionism, a movement that brought raw, aggressive, figurative painting back to a art world that had spent the previous decade on Minimalism and Conceptual Art.
Neo-Expressionism is an international painting movement that emerged in the late 1970s and dominated the 1980s. It is characterized by a return to figuration, large-scale canvases, aggressive brushwork, vivid color, and the use of unconventional materials. The movement rejected the cool, intellectual approach of Minimalism and Conceptual Art in favor of emotion, history, myth, and the physical act of painting. It was led in New York by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Julian Schnabel, in Italy by Francesco Clemente and Sandro Chia, and in Germany by Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. Neo-Expressionism is a return to expressive, figurative painting after the dominance of abstraction, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art in the 1960s and 1970s. The "neo" distinguishes it from German Expressionism of the early 20th century, which it draws on but does not replicate. Neo-Expressionist paintings are large, often monumental in scale. They feature recognizable subjects: human figures, heads, bodies, historical scenes, mythological references, and personal symbolism. The paint is applied thickly and aggressively, with visible brushwork, drips, scratches, and layers. The surfaces are often built up with unconventional materials: broken plates, wax, velvet, straw, lead, and ash.
The movement was international, but it took different forms in different countries. In New York, it was associated with the downtown art scene and the transition from graffiti and street art to gallery painting. In Italy, it was called Transavanguardia, a term coined by the critic Achille Bonito Oliva in 1979 to describe a return to figuration after the conceptual and political art of the 1970s. In Germany, it was called Neue Wilden (New Fauves), and it was more politically charged, confronting German history, the Holocaust, and national identity directly.
According to research published by Masterworks in June 2026, Basquiat now carries the entire Neo-Expressionist category at auction. His 1982 Untitled sold for $110.5 million in 2017, and in 2024 he was the most valuable contemporary artist at auction, accounting for roughly 12% of all contemporary sales on about $183 million of turnover. Neo-Expressionism emerged in the late 1970s as a reaction against the dominance of Conceptual Art, Minimalism, and performance art in the previous decade. By the mid-1970s, the art world had spent fifteen years reducing art to its essentials: ideas, systems, processes, and industrial materials. Painting, particularly figurative painting, was widely considered dead or at least exhausted. The critic Douglas Crimp published an influential essay titled "The End of Painting" in 1981, arguing that painting had been superseded by photography and conceptual practices.
Neo-Expressionism proved Crimp wrong, but it also proved that painting could be controversial again. The movement was met with intense critical hostility. Critics accused Neo-Expressionist painters of cynicism, of producing work for the market rather than for genuine artistic reasons, and of reviving a discredited form of romantic individualism. The market, however, disagreed. Prices for Neo-Expressionist work rose rapidly in the early 1980s, driven by new collectors, new galleries, and the emergence of a genuinely international art market for the first time.
The key dealer was Mary Boone, who opened her gallery in New York in 1977 and built her roster around Schnabel and David Salle. Boone placed work with collectors like Charles Saatchi and the Rubells, and she created a market dynamic where prices for young, living artists rose to levels previously reserved for established older artists. Schnabel's plate paintings, which debuted at Boone's gallery in 1979, sold for roughly $25,000 to $60,000 in the early 1980s. Basquiat moved from graffiti, under the tag SAMO, to gallery walls in a few years. He built a visual language out of street imagery, jazz, hip hop, anatomy, art history, and Afro-Caribbean references. His Untitled (1982) skull painting, now the $110.5 million work, shows a head rendered in oil stick and spray paint on raw canvas, with exposed teeth, scribbled anatomy, and a surface that looks simultaneously like a x-ray and a mask. In Italian (1983) layers text, figures, and diagrams in a dense composition that references race, language, and art history. Schnabel is the most controversial figure in Neo-Expressionism. His plate paintings, begun in 1978 after a trip to Barcelona where he encountered Antoni Gaudi's mosaics, are large canvases studded with shards of broken crockery embedded in thick impasto. The first plate painting, The Patients and the Doctors (1978), opened what Schnabel called a new pictorial terrain. Schnabel bought plates from the Salvation Army, shattered them on the ground, and adhered the fragments to wooden panels. His The Sea (1981) and The Red Sky (1984) are among the most recognized works of the movement. Critics called the plate paintings relics of the boom after the market crashed in 1990, but Schnabel has continued making them for nearly five decades. Kiefer is the most historically weighty of the Neo-Expressionists. His large-scale paintings and installations confront German history, mythology, and the Holocaust directly. Margarethe (1981) and Sulamith (1983) draw on Paul Celan's poem "Death Fugue," which contrasts the golden hair of the German Margarethe with the ashen hair of the Jewish Sulamith. Kiefer's surfaces are built up with straw, ash, lead, and shellac, creating paintings that look like excavated ruins. His Osiris and Isis (1985-1987) is a monumental painting that combines Egyptian mythology with references to nuclear destruction.
Baselitz has been painting his subjects upside down since 1969, a device he developed to force the viewer to see the painting as an object rather than a representation. His The Great Friends (1965) and Forest on Dip (1969) are early examples of the inverted figure. Baselitz's work is raw, physically aggressive, and rooted in German folk tradition and postwar trauma. He was a precursor to Neo-Expressionism, having been making expressive figurative painting since the early 1960s, and his work provided a model for the younger German painters who emerged in the late 1970s.
Clemente is the leading figure of the Italian Transavanguardia. His paintings draw on mythology, religion, sexuality, and Eastern philosophy, combining figurative imagery with a dreamlike, symbolic approach. The Fourteen Stations (1981-1982) is a series of self-portraits that reference the Stations of the Cross. Clemente's work is more lyrical and introspective than the aggressive painting of his American and German counterparts.
Neo-Expressionism's first phase runs from the late 1970s to approximately 1984, when the movement was new and controversial. This is the period of Schnabel's first plate paintings, Basquiat's transition from SAMO to gallery work, and the emergence of the Transavanguardia in Italy. The second phase runs from 1984 to 1990, when the market for Neo-Expressionist work boomed. Between May 1989 and November 1990, 29 separate Basquiats sold at $200,000 or more at international auctions. A broad art market index roughly quadrupled over the decade, rising from a low near 243 in 1982 to about 855 by 1990.
Then it broke. In early 1990 the market collapsed. A U.S. recession and the bursting of Japan's stock and property bubbles arrived together, and Japanese demand, which had pushed prices to their peak, evaporated. Prices in the broad art market fell roughly 55% between 1990 and 1993, and auction sales in some segments dropped by more than half in a single year. Schnabel's plate paintings, the emblem of the boom, cracked along with the market and spent years out of favor. A full recovery to the late 1980s peak took years, not months.
Neo-Expressionism's legacy is mixed. The movement proved that painting was not dead, which was its central claim. But it also created the template for the contemporary art market boom-and-bust cycle, in which young artists are hyped, prices rise rapidly, and then the market corrects. Basquiat's posthumous rise to $110.5 million is the exception, not the rule. Most Neo-Expressionist painters saw their prices fall in the 1990s and have not recovered to their peak levels. The movement's influence on contemporary painting is nonetheless significant: the return to figuration, the acceptance of street and graffiti aesthetics in fine art, and the use of unconventional materials all trace back to Neo-Expressionism.
Neo-Expressionism is a direct descendant of Expressionism, which also prioritized emotional intensity and raw brushwork over realistic depiction. It reacted against the reduction and intellectualism of Color Field painting and Conceptual Art.
