Neoclassicism is the style of European art and architecture that lasted from roughly 1760 to 1840. It rejected the ornament, pastel, and aristocratic leisure of the Rococo in favor of classical order, moral seriousness, and archaeological accuracy. The movement was driven by the Enlightenment, the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the political upheavals of the French Revolution and Napoleonic era. David aligned himself with the Revolution, voted for the execution of Louis XVI, and served as artistic director of the Republic. After Napoleon's fall, he was exiled to Brussels, where he died in 1825.
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867)
Ingres was David's pupil and the painter who carried Neoclassicism into the 19th century. Where David used Neoclassicism for political narrative, Ingres used it for aesthetic perfection. How to Spot Neoclassical Art
Neoclassical paintings are recognizable by their restraint and their subjects. If the painting shows a scene from Greek or Roman history, with figures in togas or armor, arranged in a balanced and symmetrical composition, it is likely Neoclassical. The colors are cool: whites, browns, deep reds, and blues, applied in smooth, invisible brushwork. The surfaces are polished, with no visible texture. The figures are idealized, with perfect proportions and calm expressions, even in scenes of death or sacrifice.
The compositions are frontal and architecturally framed, often with arches or columns that organize the figures into groups. The perspective is clear and rational. The lighting is even, with no dramatic chiaroscuro. The overall effect is one of control and order, the opposite of the Rococo's playful asymmetry and the Baroque's theatrical drama.
Neoclassical sculpture is even easier to identify. The marble is polished to a high sheen. The figures are nude or semi-nude, in classical poses derived from Greek sculpture. The surfaces are smooth, with no tool marks. The expressions are serene and impassive. If the sculpture looks like it could have been made in ancient Rome but is dated to the 18th or 19th century, it is Neoclassical.
Legacy and Influence
Neoclassicism established the academic system that dominated European art education through the 19th century. The Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, founded on Neoclassical principles, trained generations of painters and architects who spread the style across Europe and the Americas. Neoclassical architecture became the default style for government buildings, banks, and museums: the White House, the US Capitol, the British Museum, and the Pantheon in Paris are all Neoclassical buildings.
In painting, Neoclassicism was challenged by Romanticism in the 1820s and 1830s. Delacroix and Gericault rejected Neoclassical restraint in favor of color, movement, and emotional intensity. But Ingres continued painting in the Neoclassical style until his death in 1867, and his emphasis on line and draftsmanship influenced Degas, Picasso, and other modern artists.
