When you look at a mural in a 19th-century theater or a 20th-century public building, you might assume it was painted directly on the wall. Sometimes it was. But often the painting was done on canvas in a studio, carried to the site rolled up, and glued to the wall with an adhesive paste. The seam between canvas and wall is invisible. The painting looks like a fresco, but it is not. It is marouflage, and the difference matters. A fresco is permanent. A marouflaged canvas can be removed, rolled, transported, and reinstalled. This is why so many murals from the 19th and 20th centuries survive: they were never actually attached to the wall in the way they appear to be.
Marouflage is the technique of adhering a painted canvas to a wall or ceiling using an adhesive that hardens as it dries. The word comes from the French "maroufle," referring to a strong adhesive, and originally described the sticky, partly hardened scraps of paint that accumulated on a painter's palette. The technique is approximately 3,000 years old, and it has been used continuously from antiquity to the present day. It occupies a hybrid position between easel painting and mural painting: the image is painted on canvas like an easel painting, but the final support is architectural like a mural.

The process is straightforward in principle. A canvas is stretched and primed in the studio. The painting is executed on the canvas, typically in oil or acrylic. When the painting is complete, the canvas is removed from its stretcher and transported to the installation site. The wall surface is prepared: it must be clean, dry, and flat. An adhesive is applied to both the wall and the back of the canvas. The canvas is positioned on the wall and pressed into place using rubber hand rollers to smooth the surface and remove air bubbles. The adhesive dries and hardens, bonding the canvas permanently to the wall.
The adhesive is the critical component. Historically, artists used a range of materials. Rabbit-skin glue was common for centuries. White lead in oil was used in the 19th and 20th centuries, valued for its strength and durability. Starch-based pastes have been used for temporary installations. In modern practice, synthetic adhesives such as Beva 371 and acrylic emulsions are preferred for their reversibility and stability. A 2024 study published in Studies in Conservation evaluated three commonly used adhesives and three intervention layers for affixing new supports to archaeological mural paintings, conducting aging and reversibility tests to compare their properties. The research emphasizes the importance of retreatability, the ability to undo the adhesive bond without damaging the painting, as a key criterion for conservation materials. A doctoral thesis from the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia examined the historical evolution of adhesives used in marouflage, from animal glues to lead-based pastes to modern synthetics. The research conducted laboratory testing of adhesives and supports, analyzing their mechanical properties to establish a framework for understanding the relationship between adhesive, support, and canvas. Marouflage is ancient. The earliest known examples date to approximately 1000 BCE, and the technique has been used continuously since. In the Renaissance, marouflage offered painters an alternative to fresco. Fresco requires painting on wet plaster, which means the artist must work on site, in sections, and within the drying time of the plaster. Marouflage allows the artist to work in the studio, at any scale, over any period, and then install the finished painting on site. This flexibility made it attractive for large-scale commissions where the wall surface was not suitable for fresco or where the artist could not work on location for extended periods.
The technique became particularly important in the 18th and 19th centuries, when large-scale decorative painting in theaters, churches, and public buildings reached its peak. A study published in the Journal of Studies and Research on Textile and Art examined canvas-marouflaged murals in Iranian churches, documenting the technique's use in the 17th and 18th centuries. The research identified the typical layer structure: wall support, scratch coat (arriccio), fine coat (intonaco), textile support, and color layer. The paintings were glued to the wall with organic adhesives, possibly of animal origin, and sometimes additionally nailed at the edges. In the 20th century, marouflage became a standard technique for public murals, particularly in the United States under the WPA Federal Art Project (1935-1943). The technique allowed murals to be painted in studios and installed in completed buildings without the logistical challenges of on-site fresco work. Many WPA murals that survive today do so because they were marouflaged and could be removed and relocated when their original buildings were demolished.
Rubens used marouflage for some of his large-scale decorative commissions. The ceiling paintings for the Banqueting House in Whitehall, London (1630-1634), were painted on canvas in Rubens's studio in Antwerp and shipped to England for installation. The canvases were adhered to the ceiling using the marouflage technique, allowing Rubens to work at his studio scale rather than on a scaffold in London.
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, the great Venetian fresco painter, also used marouflage for certain commissions. His ceiling paintings for the Residenz in Wurzburg (1750-1753) include sections painted on canvas and adhered to the ceiling. The combination of true fresco and marouflaged canvas in the same room allowed Tiepolo to work faster and to execute some sections in his studio.
Munch's monumental paintings for the University of Oslo Aula (1909-1916) include large canvases that were marouflaged to the wall. A 2012 study by Mengshoel, Liu, and Froysaker recreated the damages and historical treatments found in Munch's Aula paintings to test materials and procedures for marouflage conservation. The research highlighted the specific challenges of maintaining these works, which combine the vulnerabilities of canvas painting with the environmental exposure of mural painting. Rivera is primarily known for true fresco, but he also used marouflage for some murals, particularly when working in buildings where the wall structure could not support the moisture of fresco plaster. His ability to move between fresco and marouflage depending on the site conditions demonstrates the practical considerations that drove the choice of technique.
The WPA Federal Art Project produced over 2,500 murals in public buildings across the United States. Many of these were marouflaged, including works by Ben Shahn, Arshile Gorky, and Stuart Davis. The technique was chosen for practical reasons: it allowed artists to work in shared studios rather than on site, and it produced murals that could be relocated if the building was renovated or demolished.
Marouflage is designed to be invisible. The canvas is adhered flush to the wall, and the edges are typically hidden by architectural trim or blended into the surrounding surface. To identify a marouflaged mural, look for seams. The canvas has edges, and if the installation was not perfect, you may see a faint line where the canvas ends. Look for areas where the paint surface has a slight texture that differs from the surrounding plaster. Canvas has a weave, and under raking light, the texture of the fabric may be visible through the paint layer.
If the mural has been damaged or is undergoing conservation, the canvas layer becomes visible. Peeling or bubbling areas reveal the fabric support and the adhesive layer beneath. This is one of the key conservation challenges with marouflage: the adhesive can fail over time due to moisture, temperature changes, or chemical degradation, causing the canvas to separate from the wall.
In many cases, the only way to confirm marouflage is through technical examination. Conservators use infrared reflectography, ultraviolet light, and cross-section analysis to identify the presence of a canvas layer between the paint and the plaster. The Iranian church study identified canvas-marouflaged murals through field surveys that revealed the layer structure and adhesive materials.
Marouflage overlaps with several other terms in this glossary. Fresco is the alternative mural technique, where paint is applied directly to wet plaster. Fresco is permanent but inflexible. Marouflage is removable but vulnerable to adhesive failure. Canvas is the support material that marouflage uses, and the properties of the canvas, its weave, weight, and preparation, affect how well it adheres to the wall. Oil painting is the medium most commonly used on marouflaged canvases, though acrylic has become common in modern practice.
