Canvas: The Woven Fabric That Became the World's Painting Surface

For 400 years, if you asked a painter what they painted on, the answer was almost always the same: canvas. Before canvas, it was wood. After wood, it was canvas. And despite the arrival of synthetic alternatives, polyester substrates, and digital tablets, canvas remains the default painting surface for most painters working today. Walk through any art supply store and the canvas section dominates the floor. Stretched, rolled, primed, unprimed, cotton, linen, in weights from 4 ounces to 12 ounces per square yard. The material has not changed in its essentials since the 16th century, when Venetian painters discovered that sailcloth made a better painting surface than wooden panel.

Canvas is a durable, plain-woven fabric used as a painting surface, typically stretched across a wooden frame called a stretcher and coated with a primer before painting. The word comes from the Latin "cannabis," meaning hemp, because the earliest canvas was woven from hemp fibers. Modern canvas is made from cotton, linen, or sometimes polyester, woven in a plain weave pattern where warp and weft threads interlace at right angles. Canvas replaced wooden panel as the dominant painting support in Europe during the 16th century, and it has remained the standard surface for oil and acrylic painting ever since.

What Is Canvas and Why Do Painters Use It?

Canvas is a fabric, and fabric is flexible. That flexibility is both the advantage and the challenge of painting on canvas. Unlike a rigid wooden panel, canvas can be stretched, rolled, and transported easily. A 6-foot canvas can be rolled into a tube 8 inches in diameter and shipped across the world. A 6-foot wooden panel weighs 40 pounds and requires a crate. Canvas is also cheaper than panel, available in much larger sizes, and its woven texture creates a surface quality that painters have learned to exploit. The slight give of stretched canvas under the brush is something painters develop a feel for, and many prefer it to the unyielding surface of panel.

The weave of canvas matters. Plain weave, where warp and weft threads interlace alternately, is preferred for painting because it stretches evenly and holds tension. The texture of the weave, called the "tooth," gives the primer something to grip and creates a subtle pattern that shows through thin paint layers. Smooth canvas is preferred for portraits and fine detail work. Coarse canvas is chosen for landscapes and large-scale work where a broken brush stroke is desirable.

Canvas must be prepared before painting. Raw canvas is absorbent and would cause oil paint to rot the fibers if applied directly. History and Origins

The use of fabric as a painting support dates to Greek and Roman times, but wood was the dominant support for easel painting in the West until the early 16th century. Most earlier paintings on fabric were intended to be affordable and temporary, like banners carried in processions. Dirk Bouts's Entombment (1450s, National Gallery, London) is a rare surviving example of distemper on linen from this period, and it is faded and fragile compared to panel paintings of the same era.

One of the earliest surviving oil paintings on canvas is a French Virgin and Child with Angels from around 1410, now in the Gemaldegalerie, Berlin. The Italian artist Lippo di Dalmasio painted The Madonna of Humility on canvas around 1390, now in the National Gallery, London. Paolo Uccello used canvas for Saint George and the Dragon around 1470, and Botticelli's Birth of Venus (1480s) was painted on canvas, though this was unusual for the period.

The shift from panel to canvas happened first in Venice during the early 16th century. The reasons were practical. Venice's high humidity caused wooden panels to swell, warp, and crack. Canvas, by contrast, is flexible and tolerates humidity changes well. Venice was also a center of sailcloth production, and the same hemp sailcloth that equipped the Venetian fleet was available to painters. Mantegna and the Venetian artists, including Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese, led the transition. Canvas could be produced in much larger sizes than panel, and the lighter weight allowed for the creation of very large paintings that could be moved and even rolled for transport. Tintoretto's large Venetian canvases sometimes required stitching together multiple pieces of narrower fabric, and seams are visible on close inspection of his largest works.

Canvas took longer to replace panel in Northern Europe. The change took about a century longer than in Italy, and panel paintings remained common in the Netherlands through the 17th century. Rembrandt used both supports. Vermeer used canvas for most of his surviving works. By the 18th century, canvas had become the standard support for easel painting across Europe.

The 20th century brought two major changes. First, cotton canvas, known as cotton duck, replaced linen as the most common painting surface. Cotton duck gained acceptance as a full-fledged support for permanent painting in the mid-20th century, driven partly by the shortage of European linen after World War II. The American Abstract Expressionists, who needed large, affordable surfaces for their monumental canvases, turned to cotton duck. Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Helen Frankenthaler all painted on cotton. Second, some painters began working on unprimed canvas, letting acrylic paint soak into the raw fabric. Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, and Kenneth Noland developed the stain painting technique, which exploited the absorbency of unprimed cotton duck in ways that oil paint on primed canvas could not achieve.

Types of Canvas

Linen

Linen is woven from flax fibers and is the premium canvas material. It has been the preferred surface for oil painting since the 16th century. Linen is exceptionally strong, naturally resistant to mold and pests, and maintains a tight stretch over time. Its long fibers produce a smooth, tight weave that is ideal for fine detail work and formal portraiture. Linen has a natural warm brown tone that some painters prefer. The main drawback is cost. Linen canvas is significantly more expensive than cotton, and it is harder to stretch and prime yourself. Professional oil painters, especially those working on commissioned portraits or important works, still choose linen.

Cotton Duck

Cotton duck is the most widely used canvas today. The word "duck" comes from the Dutch "doek," meaning linen canvas, and was applied to cotton fabric when it replaced linen. Cotton duck is available in a wide range of weights and grades, from lightweight 4-ounce fabric for sketches to heavy 12-ounce canvas for large-scale work. It is affordable, easy to stretch, and has an even, mechanical weave. Cotton is weaker than linen and more prone to stretching and sagging over time, but for most painters the difference is negligible if the canvas is properly stretched and sized. The advent of acrylic paint greatly increased the popularity of cotton duck, since acrylic does not require the same oil-resistant sizing that oil paint does.

Polyester Canvas

Polyester canvas is a synthetic alternative that can be stretched and primed like traditional fabric. It is completely unaffected by humidity, mold, and pests, which makes it more dimensionally stable than natural fibers. Conservation experts believe polyester canvas may prove more durable than linen or cotton in long-term aging tests. Polyester has a smoother surface than natural fiber canvas and does not have the same organic texture. It is less common in traditional painting but is gaining acceptance among painters who prioritize archival stability.

Hemp

Hemp was the original canvas material, and the word "canvas" itself derives from cannabis. Hemp produces a heavy, strong, but very coarse fabric. It was the material of the first Venetian canvases, used because it was available as sailcloth. Hemp is no longer widely used for painting canvas, having been replaced by linen and cotton, but it remains the historical origin of the support.

Canvas Formats

Stretched Canvas

Stretched canvas is fabric pulled taut over a wooden frame called a stretcher and held in place with tacks or staples. The stretcher bars have expandable corners, allowing the painter to adjust tension by tapping small wooden wedges into the corner joints. This is the standard format for easel painting. Stretched canvas can be bought pre-stretched and pre-primed, or the painter can stretch raw canvas from a roll.

Canvas Rolls

Canvas is sold in rolls of various widths, typically 60 to 84 inches, for painters who want to stretch their own or who work on very large surfaces. Buying canvas in rolls is more economical for large-scale work and allows the painter to choose the exact weight, weave, and priming type. Some painters work on unstretched canvas tacked to a wall or laid on the floor, then stretch the finished painting afterward.

Canvas Panels

Canvas panels are canvas glued to a rigid backing like MDF or hardboard. They combine the texture of canvas with the stability of a panel. They are portable, affordable, and popular for plein air work and studies. See our separate entry on canvas panels for details.

Canvas Weights and Grades

Canvas is classified by weight, measured in ounces per square yard or grams per square meter. Lightweight canvas is about 4 to 5 ounces per square yard (140 to 170 g/m2), suitable for sketches and small works. Medium-weight canvas is 7 to 8 ounces (240 to 270 g/m2), the standard for most painting. Heavy-weight canvas is 10 to 12 ounces (340 to 400 g/m2), used for large-scale works and heavy impasto. For pictures larger than 48 inches, a weight of at least 10 ounces for linen or 10 to 12 ounces for cotton is recommended to prevent sagging.

In the United States, canvas is also classified by a numbered grade system that runs in reverse of weight. A number 10 canvas is lighter than a number 4. This system can be confusing, so most manufacturers now list the weight in ounces alongside the grade number.

How to Choose Canvas Today

For oil painting, linen is the traditional choice and still the best for archival quality. If cost is a concern, cotton duck primed with acrylic gesso is perfectly acceptable for most work. For acrylic painting, cotton duck is the standard. For very large works, consider polyester canvas for its dimensional stability. For plein air painting and studies, canvas panels are the practical choice.

Buy pre-primed canvas if you want to start painting immediately. Buy unprimed canvas if you want to control the preparation process, which involves sizing and priming the fabric yourself. Oil painters who want a traditional oil ground should buy unprimed linen and apply rabbit skin glue size followed by oil primer. Acrylic painters can use acrylic gesso directly on raw canvas, which serves as both size and primer.
