In the foreground of Hans Holbein the Younger's The Ambassadors (1533, National Gallery, London), lying diagonally across the floor, is a long, gray smear. It looks like a mistake, a piece of damaged paint, or something the artist abandoned. It is none of those things. Stand to the right of the painting, close to the wall, and look across the surface at a shallow angle. The smear resolves into a human skull. Holbein painted it using a mathematical projection that compresses the image along one axis so that it only becomes legible when viewed from a position the painting does not initially invite you to occupy. The skull is a memento mori, a reminder of death, hidden in plain sight in a portrait of two wealthy, confident men at the height of their powers. You walk past it. Then you see it. The delay between those two moments is the experience anamorphosis creates.
Anamorphosis is a projection technique that produces a distorted image which resolves into a coherent picture only when viewed from a specific vantage point or with the aid of a reflective device. The word comes from the Greek "ana" (again or back) and "morphe" (shape or form), meaning to form again. It is a branch of perspective, but where ordinary perspective creates a convincing illusion of depth for a viewer standing in front of the image, anamorphosis creates an image that is invisible or unrecognizable from the front and only becomes visible from an oblique angle or through a curved mirror.

What Is Anamorphosis and How Does It Work?
Anamorphosis is a deliberate misuse of linear perspective. In ordinary perspective, the image is constructed for a viewer standing at a specific point in front of the picture plane. The vanishing point is placed at the center of the image, and the projection geometry ensures that the image looks correct from that viewing position. Anamorphosis shifts the viewing position to an extreme angle, far to one side or above or below the picture plane, and constructs the image so that it only resolves from that position. The result is an image that looks stretched, smeared, or unrecognizable when viewed from the front.
There are two main types of anamorphosis. The first is perspective anamorphosis, which requires the viewer to stand at a specific oblique angle to the picture plane. Holbein's skull in The Ambassadors is the classic example. The second is catoptric anamorphosis, which requires a cylindrical or conical mirror placed on or near the image. The distorted image is reflected by the mirror and reconstituted into a coherent picture. This type was developed in the 17th century and became popular in baroque optical cabinets and scientific demonstrations.
A 2025 doctoral thesis from UCL studied the work of Jean-Francois Niceron (1613-1646) and the Order of Minims in 17th-century Italy. Niceron was a mathematician and painter who developed both types of anamorphosis to a high degree of sophistication. The thesis re-enacted Niceron's drawing instructions on site, introducing the researcher's body into the space of representation. The research argues that anamorphic images actively question the role of representation in architecture by challenging the gaze and opening a space for discovery in the physical encounter with the image. Origins and History
Anamorphosis emerged from the same mathematical framework that produced linear perspective in the Renaissance. The technique was known empirically from the early 16th century. Leonardo da Vinci's Codex Atlanticus contains an early experiment with anamorphic drawing, a distorted face that resolves when viewed from the side. The first published treatment of anamorphosis appeared in Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola's Le Due Regole della Prospettiva Pratica in 1583, with commentary by Ignazio Danti, who described the technique and provided construction methods.
The 17th century was the golden age of anamorphosis. Jean-Francois Niceron, a French Minim friar working in Rome and Paris, published La Perspective Curieuse in 1638, the first systematic treatise on anamorphic projection. Niceron described both perspective and catoptric anamorphosis and provided detailed geometric constructions for each. His work was built on the optical theories of Descartes and the projective geometry of Girard Desargues. Niceron painted anamorphic murals in the convent of the Trinita dei Monti in Rome, including a wall painting of Saint John the Evangelist that resolves into a coherent image only when viewed through a cylindrical mirror placed at a specific point on the floor. Erhard Schon (1491-1542)
Schon, a student of Albrecht Durer, produced some of the earliest printed anamorphic images. His Vexierbild (1534) is a woodcut that contains hidden anamorphic portraits of Charles V and Ferdinand I, visible only when viewed from an extreme angle. Schon's work demonstrates that anamorphosis was not confined to elite painting but circulated in popular prints.
Salvador Dali (1904-1989)
Dali revived anamorphosis in the 20th century. His Slave Market with the Disappearing Bust of Voltaire (1940, Salvador Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida) uses anamorphic principles to create an image that shifts between two readings: a group of figures in a market and a bust of Voltaire. The image does not require a specific viewing angle, but it exploits the same perceptual mechanism as traditional anamorphosis: the brain alternates between two incompatible interpretations of the same visual data.
Felice Varini (b. 1952)
Varini is a Swiss contemporary artist who creates large-scale anamorphic installations in architectural spaces. He paints geometric shapes on walls, floors, and ceilings that resolve into coherent forms only when viewed from a specific vantage point. From any other position, the shapes appear as disconnected fragments. His work extends anamorphosis from the picture plane into three-dimensional space.
How to Spot Anamorphosis in a Painting
Look for areas of a painting that appear distorted, smeared, or unrecognizable when viewed from the front. If you see a passage of paint that looks like a mistake or an abstract smear in an otherwise realistic painting, approach it from an oblique angle. Move to the side of the painting and look across the surface. If the smear resolves into a recognizable image, you are looking at a perspective anamorphosis.
At the National Gallery in London, stand directly in front of The Ambassadors and look at the floor between the two figures. The diagonal gray shape is the anamorphic skull. Now walk to the right side of the painting, close to the wall, and look across the surface at a shallow angle. The skull resolves. The experience is startling because the painting is otherwise a model of frontal, rational perspective. The anamorphic element breaks the rules the rest of the painting follows.
For catoptric anamorphosis, look for paintings or prints that include a cylindrical or conical mirror as part of the composition. The image is designed to be viewed in the mirror's reflection, not directly. These works are rarer in museums but appear in collections of scientific instruments and optical toys.
Anamorphosis overlaps with several other terms in this glossary. Linear perspective is the mathematical system that anamorphosis exploits and subverts. Trompe l'oeil shares with anamorphosis the ambition to deceive the eye, but trompe l'oeil creates a convincing illusion from the front while anamorphosis creates a hidden image that is invisible from the front.
