Graphite: The Carbon Medium That Defined Modern Drawing

Graphite is a crystalline carbon used for drawing since the 1500s. Learn graphite grades from 9H to 9B, its Borrowdale origins, and how artists use it today.

Pick up a pencil and you are holding a piece of carbon that was forged under geological pressure hundreds of millions of years ago. The graphite core of that pencil is a crystalline form of carbon, the same element that makes diamonds, but arranged in flat sheets that slide over each other with the lightest pressure. That sliding is why graphite leaves a mark on paper. When the pencil tip moves across the surface, microscopic sheets of carbon shear off and embed themselves in the fibers of the paper. You are not writing with liquid or paste. You are depositing thin flakes of mineral.

Graphite is a naturally occurring crystalline form of carbon used as a drawing medium. In its pure form, it produces a metallic gray mark that ranges from pale silver to deep black depending on hardness and concentration. Mixed with clay and fired, it becomes the core of the modern pencil, graded on a scale from 9H (hardest, lightest) to 9B (softest, darkest). Graphite displaced silverpoint as the dominant drawing medium in the 16th century and has held that position ever since. Every artist who draws today works with graphite, whether in a wooden casing, a mechanical holder, a woodless stick, or as powdered pigment applied with a brush.

What Is Graphite and How Does It Work?

Graphite is one of three naturally occurring forms of pure carbon, alongside diamond and amorphous carbon. Its structure consists of carbon atoms bonded in flat hexagonal sheets, with weak bonds between the sheets. When you drag graphite across paper, those weak interlayer bonds break and the top sheets slide off, depositing a thin film of carbon on the surface. This is why graphite feels smooth and slightly greasy when you handle it. The same property makes it useful as a lubricant in industrial applications.

For drawing, graphite is processed in two ways. Natural graphite, mined from deposits, was the original drawing material. Lumps of pure graphite were sawn into sticks and wrapped in string or wood. The Borrowdale deposit in England, discovered around 1564, produced graphite of such purity that it could be cut into solid sticks without any processing. This deposit was the only known source of high-quality solid graphite for over 200 years, and the British government controlled it as a strategic material.

The second method, developed by Nicolas-Jacques Conte in 1795, mixes powdered graphite with clay and fires it in a kiln. The ratio of graphite to clay determines the hardness of the resulting core. More clay produces a harder, lighter mark. More graphite produces a softer, darker mark. This is the basis of the grading system used today. The Conte process was revolutionary because it allowed manufacturers to produce consistent, predictable grades of graphite from impure sources, ending dependence on the dwindling Borrowdale deposit.

The Graphite Grading Scale

The grading system for graphite pencils runs from 9H on the hard end through H, F, HB, B, and up to 9B on the soft end. H stands for hardness. B stands for blackness. HB sits at the midpoint, balancing hardness and blackness. F stands for "fine point," sitting between H and HB. The scale was standardized in the early 20th century by manufacturers including Staedtler in Germany and Conte in France, though slight variations persist between brands.

Hard grades (9H through H) contain more clay and less graphite. They produce light, precise lines that hold a sharp point for a long time. They are used for technical drawing, architectural layout, under-sketching, and fine detail work. A 4H or 6H pencil leaves a mark so faint it barely registers on paper, which makes it useful for initial construction lines that should not show in the finished drawing.

Medium grades (F, HB, B) balance clay and graphite. HB is the standard writing pencil grade and a versatile drawing grade. B is slightly softer and darker, suitable for general sketching and line work. These grades are the daily drivers for most artists.

Soft grades (2B through 9B) contain more graphite and less clay. They produce dark, rich marks that blend and smudge easily. A 2B or 4B handles most shading needs. Grades above 6B produce increasingly dark and glossy marks but wear down quickly and lose their point. Some manufacturers extend the range to 10B or 14B for specialty work, though the difference between 8B and 10B is subtle.

A 2026 guide published by Artistic Masterclass tested over 30 graphite pencil sets and found that most professional artists work primarily with five to seven grades rather than complete sets of 20 or more. For portrait drawing, the recommended core set is 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, and 6B. For architectural and technical drawing, 2H, H, and HB cover most needs. Origins and History

Graphite was used for drawing long before the pencil existed. The earliest known graphite drawings date to the 17th century, though the material was likely used for marking earlier. When the Borrowdale deposit was discovered in the 1560s, graphite sticks were produced by sawing the raw mineral into thin rods. These were wrapped in string or sheepskin for grip and used for writing, drawing, and marking sheep. The term "lead pencil" comes from this period, when people mistakenly believed the material was a form of lead. The misnomer persists in the word "lead" for a pencil core.

The Borrowdale deposit was strategically important because it was the only source of solid graphite pure enough for direct use. The British Crown controlled the mine and guarded it against theft. Graphite from Borrowdale was so valuable that pieces were smuggled out inside hollowed-out sticks. When the deposit began to run low in the 18th century, manufacturers had to find alternatives. They ground impure graphite into powder and mixed it with binders, but the results were inconsistent.

Conte's 1795 invention of the clay-graphite mixture solved the supply problem and created the modern pencil industry. Around the same time, Joseph Hardtmuth in Austria was developing a similar process, founding the Koh-I-Noor company. The 19th century saw the rapid industrialization of pencil manufacturing, with Faber-Castell, Staedtler, and other German companies establishing the quality standards that persist today.

Graphite also exists in forms beyond the cased pencil. Woodless graphite pencils are solid sticks of graphite with a thin lacquer coating, allowing for broad strokes and large-area coverage. Graphite powder, applied with a brush or cloth, produces smooth tonal washes impossible to achieve with a pointed pencil. Mechanical pencils use thin graphite leads in holders, maintaining a consistent point without sharpening. Water-soluble graphite pencils contain a binder that dissolves when brushed with water, allowing for wash effects similar to watercolor.

Key Artists Who Used Graphite

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

Leonardo drew with graphite in the early stages of his career, though he is better known for silverpoint and red chalk. His graphite studies from the 1470s show the medium used for rapid compositional sketches, taking advantage of its erasability and speed compared to metalpoint.

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867)

Ingres produced portrait drawings in graphite that are among the most refined works in the medium. His portraits from the 1810s and 1820s, drawn with fine graphite lines on white paper, achieve a precision and subtlety that few artists have matched. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds several Ingres graphite portraits, including Portrait of Madame Panckoucke (c. 1815), where the pencil lines describe fabric, hair, and facial structure with an economy that borders on the miraculous.

Edgar Degas (1834-1917)

Degas used graphite for studies of dancers and bathers, building tonal range through layered hatching and smudging. His graphite drawings from the 1870s onward show the medium used not for precision but for exploration, with erased and redrawn lines visible beneath the surface. The Musee d'Orsay holds many of these drawings, which reveal Degas's process of searching for form through repeated adjustment.

Kathe Kollwitz (1867-1945)

Kollwitz used graphite alongside charcoal and etching for her drawings of workers, mothers, and the poor. Her graphite drawings, such as Self-Portrait Drawing (c. 1900), use the medium for its capacity to move between delicate line and dense tonal shading. Kollwitz exploited the full range of graphite grades, from hard construction lines to soft, smudged shadows.

Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009)

Wyeth used graphite for preparatory studies for his tempera paintings, producing drawings of extraordinary precision and sensitivity. His graphite studies of the Helga series (1971-1985) demonstrate the medium's capacity for both fine detail and broad atmospheric shading. Wyeth often combined graphite with watercolor washes, using the pencil for structural lines and the wash for tone.

How to Choose Graphite for Different Purposes

For portrait and figure drawing, a range of five grades covers most needs: 2H for initial construction lines, HB and 2B for mid-tones, 4B for darker shadows, and 6B for the deepest accents. This set allows you to build values from light to dark without relying on a single grade for everything. The 2H lines should be so faint they are barely visible, serving as a map for the darker grades that follow.

For landscape and plein air sketching, softer grades are preferable because they produce visible marks quickly. A 2B or 4B works for most outdoor work, with a 6B for deep shadows in foliage or rock formations. Hard grades are less useful outdoors because they require more pressure and can tear thin sketchbook paper.

For technical and architectural drawing, hard grades dominate. 2H provides standard line weight, H handles lighter construction lines, and 4H produces layout marks so faint they will not reproduce in scans or photocopies. The Staedtler Mars Lumograph is the industry standard for technical work, with consistent hard grades that hold a point through long drawing sessions.

Graphite has one significant limitation as a drawing medium: it produces a metallic sheen when applied heavily. Soft grades (6B and above) laid down in thick layers develop a glossy surface that reflects light differently from the rest of the drawing. This sheen is visible when viewing the drawing from an angle. Some artists exploit this effect for contrast. Others avoid it by using charcoal, which produces deep blacks without sheen, or by using carbon-blend pencils like the Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black, which mixes graphite with carbon to reduce reflectivity.

Graphite is one of several carbon-based drawing materials. Charcoal is carbonized organic matter, producing darker but less precise marks. Carbon black is pigment made from burnt organic matter, used in ink and paint. Silverpoint was the drawing medium graphite replaced, offering permanence but lacking erasability and tonal range.
