Cross Hatching: Overlapping Line Sets for Darker Values and Deeper Form

Cross hatching is the drawing technique of overlapping sets of parallel lines to build darker values. From Durer to Rembrandt, learn how it creates tone and form.

In Albrecht Durer's 1514 engraving Melencolia I, the background behind the brooding winged figure is not black. It is not gray. It is a deep, warm darkness built from four layers of lines crossing each other at progressively different angles. The first layer runs diagonally. The second crosses it at 90 degrees. The third adds another diagonal. The fourth fills the remaining gaps. Each layer adds more ink to the paper, and the cumulative effect is a darkness that has depth and texture rather than flat blackness. This is cross hatching at its most refined: a system for building darkness from nothing but lines, where each additional layer adds both value and visual complexity.

Cross hatching is the technique of building tonal value by layering sets of parallel lines at angles to each other. It is the direct extension of hatching, which uses a single set of parallel lines. Cross hatching adds a second set crossing the first, and optionally a third, fourth, or further sets, to produce progressively darker values. At its simplest, one layer of linear hatching is laid over another at a 90-degree angle. Further diagonal layers may be added for still darker tones. The technique is fundamental to drawing, printmaking, and any linear medium where tone must be built from marks.

What Is Cross Hatching and How Does It Work?

Cross hatching works on the same optical principle as hatching: the eye blends black lines and white paper into perceived gray. The difference is that cross hatching stacks multiple layers of lines, each at a different angle, to reduce the amount of white paper visible between marks. One layer of hatching leaves roughly half the paper visible. A second layer crossing at 90 degrees leaves roughly a quarter. A third diagonal layer leaves roughly an eighth. Each layer multiplies the density of marks and darkens the perceived tone.

The technique allows for a wide tonal range from a single drawing tool. With pen and ink, where you cannot blend or erase, cross hatching is the primary method for controlling value. Light areas have no hatching or widely spaced single hatching. Mid-tones have two layers. Dark areas have three or four layers. The darkest areas, where the lines are so dense that almost no paper shows through, approach black.

A 2025 study published in the journal Arsir evaluated the use of linear shading versus cross-hatching in depicting volume in architectural sketches. The research found that cross-hatching was more effective at producing volumetric images with depth and realistic lighting effects, though students found it more difficult and time-consuming than linear shading. The key to effective cross hatching is that each layer should follow the form it describes. In Durer's engravings, the first layer of hatching follows the primary contour of the form. The second layer crosses it at an angle that follows the secondary contour. The result is a mesh of lines that describes the three-dimensional surface while simultaneously building tone. When cross hatching is done without regard to form, with lines crossing at arbitrary angles, the tone is produced but the form is not described. The difference between competent cross hatching and masterful cross hatching is whether the lines serve the form or only the value.

Origins and History

Cross hatching emerged alongside hatching in the Middle Ages and developed rapidly in the 15th century with the rise of printmaking. The earliest known example of cross hatching may also be the oldest drawing in human history: the ochre crayon mark from the Blombos Caves in South Africa, dated to approximately 100,000 years ago, consists of intersecting lines that constitute a form of cross hatching.

In Western art, cross hatching became a systematic technique in the 15th century, primarily through engraving and woodcut. Master E.S. (active c. 1450-1467) and Martin Schongauer (c. 1450-1491) were pioneers of both hatching and cross hatching in engraving. Erhard Reuwich and Michael Wolgemut developed the techniques in woodcut. Albrecht Durer perfected cross hatching in both media, bringing a level of control and refinement that set the standard for centuries.

By the 16th century, cross hatching had spread across Europe. Historical records show that parallel hatching was used in Florentine drawings by 1440, and cross hatching followed shortly after. Two drawings by the Venetian cartographer Giovanni Leardo demonstrate the spread: a piece from 1442 does not show hatching, while one from 1448 does. By 1450, the technique had spread throughout the Italian peninsula and into neighboring regions.

A 2025 study published on Zenodo traced the evolution of hatching techniques in European art, documenting how cross hatching developed from its medieval origins through the printmaking renaissance. Key Artists and Practitioners

Albrecht Durer (1471-1528)

Durer is the undisputed master of cross hatching. In Melencolia I (1514) and Saint Jerome in His Study (1514), the cross hatching describes form, texture, light, and atmosphere with a precision that has never been matched. Durer's innovation was to use cross hatching not just for tone but for color simulation. In his engravings, different hatching patterns represent different colors: closely spaced parallel lines for red, two perpendicular layers for green, diagonal layers for blue. This system, adapted from heraldic conventions, allowed Durer to suggest color in a purely black-and-white medium.

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)

Rembrandt's etchings use cross hatching to create some of the most emotionally resonant prints in Western art. In Reclining Female Nude (c. 1658), the cross hatching on the figure's skin is subtle and varied, building tone through multiple layers of lines that follow the contours of the body. The background uses denser cross hatching to create near-total darkness. The contrast between the delicate cross hatching on the skin and the heavy cross hatching in the background is part of what makes the print so powerful. Rembrandt's Self-Portrait in a Cap, Wide-eyed and Open-mouthed (c. 1628-1630) shows the artist using cross hatching to define his own features with startling intimacy, the subtle hatching on his cheeks developing into frenzied overlapping hatching in his hair.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

Leonardo used cross hatching extensively in his drawings, particularly in anatomical studies. His left-handed cross hatching, with lines running from upper left to lower right, is a signature of his drawing style. In his studies of the human body, cross hatching describes the curvature of muscles, the roundness of bones, and the volume of organs with a precision that combines scientific observation with artistic sensitivity.

Odilon Redon (1840-1916)

Redon used cross hatching in his charcoal and pastel works to create luminous effects. In Melancholy, the cross hatching in the burst of cool light behind the figure allows the yellow ground to show through between the pale blue lines, creating contrast in color and line that completes the illusion of illumination. Redon's cross hatching demonstrates that the technique is not limited to black ink on white paper. It can be used with color to create optical mixing effects.

Van Gogh (1853-1890)

Van Gogh adapted cross hatching into a painterly, expressive technique in his pen-and-ink drawings. His cross hatching is loose, energetic, and directional, with lines that swirl and curve rather than running in neat parallel sets. In his drawings of the landscape around Saint-Remy (1889-1890), the cross hatching describes the movement of wind through trees and the texture of fields with a vitality that traditional, controlled cross hatching could not achieve.

How to Spot Cross Hatching in a Drawing or Print

Look for overlapping line sets. If you see an area of a drawing or print where two or more layers of parallel lines cross each other at different angles, you are looking at cross hatching. The simplest form is two layers at 90 degrees. More complex forms add diagonal layers at 45 degrees, and the darkest areas may have four or five layers crossing at progressively different angles.

In a Durer engraving, look at the darkest areas of the print. What appears to be solid black from a distance is actually multiple layers of cross hatching, each one visible as a distinct set of lines. Get close to a Durer print and you can count the layers. In a Rembrandt etching, the cross hatching is less regular and more expressive, with lines that vary in thickness and direction to create texture as well as tone.

In pen-and-ink drawings, cross hatching is often the primary method for building tone. Look at Leonardo's anatomical drawings in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, where the cross hatching describes the curvature of muscles and bones. Look at Van Gogh's reed pen drawings, where the cross hatching is so energetic that it becomes a form of mark-making in itself rather than just a tonal system.

Cross hatching is directly built on hatching, which uses a single set of parallel lines. The two techniques are almost always used together in the same drawing: hatching for lighter values, cross hatching for darker ones. Contour drawing provides the linear framework that hatching and cross hatching fill with tone. Stippling is a parallel technique that uses dots instead of lines to build tone through optical mixing. Etching and engraving are printmaking techniques where cross hatching is the primary method for achieving tonal range.

Cross hatching, like hatching, is best appreciated in original prints and drawings. The British Museum in London has the most comprehensive collection of Durer engravings, where you can examine Melencolia I and Saint Jerome at close range and count the layers of cross hatching in the darkest passages. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has Rembrandt's etchings, where the cross hatching ranges from the most delicate skin tones to near-total darkness.

For drawings, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris have extensive collections of European drawings where cross hatching is the primary shading technique.
