In 480 BCE, the Persians sacked Athens. The temples on the Acropolis were burned, the statues toppled. When the Greeks rebuilt, they buried the damaged statues in pits on the Acropolis, where they lay for 2,300 years. In 1865, archaeologists digging on the Acropolis found one of these buried figures: a marble youth, just under four feet tall, standing with his weight on his left leg and his right leg relaxed. The hips tilt. The shoulders counter-tilt. The spine curves into a subtle S. This is the Kritios Boy, and it is the first known statue in Western art to show the human body standing the way a human body actually stands. Kenneth Clark called it "the first beautiful nude in art."
Greek classical art is the visual culture of ancient Greece from roughly 480 BCE to 323 BCE, spanning the Early Classical, High Classical, and Late Classical periods. It is the art that gave Western civilization the idealized human form, the contrapposto stance, mathematical systems of bodily proportion, and the architectural vocabulary of the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders. Greek art was not naturalistic in the sense of copying what the eye sees. It was idealistic: it showed the human body as it ought to be, perfected through geometry and observation.
This entry covers the development of Greek classical art, its key sculptors and works, and how to recognize the conventions that shaped Western art for the next 2,400 years.
Greek classical art is defined by its focus on the human body as a vehicle for beauty, proportion, and psychological expression. The Greeks trained and competed in athletics in the nude, and the athletic body was the primary subject of classical sculpture. But these statues were not portraits of specific athletes. They were ideal types, constructed according to mathematical ratios that the Greeks believed governed beauty in nature.
The key innovation was contrapposto: the pose in which a figure stands with most of its weight on one leg, causing the hips, shoulders, and spine to shift in response. Before contrapposto, Greek statues stood rigidly frontal, weight distributed evenly on both legs, in the pose of the archaic kouros. The Kritios Boy, dated to c. 480 BCE, is the first surviving statue to break this convention. Smarthistory's analysis of contrapposto notes that it "marks the first time in Western art that the human body is used to express a psychological disposition." Read the full explanation at Smarthistory.
Greek art is conventionally divided into three periods before the Hellenistic era. The Archaic period (c. 800-480 BCE) produced the kouros (male youth) and kore (female maiden) statues, rigidly frontal figures with the "archaic smile." The Early Classical or Severe style (c. 480-450 BCE) followed the Persian Wars. The Kritios Boy belongs here, as does the Riace Bronzes (c. 460 BCE), two full-size bronze warriors found off the coast of southern Italy in 1972. The High Classical period (c. 450-400 BCE) produced the Parthenon and the work of Phidias. The Late Classical period (c. 400-323 BCE) saw the work of Praxiteles and Lysippos, who introduced more graceful, elongated proportions.
The Hellenistic period (323-31 BCE) followed Alexander the Great's conquests and the spread of Greek culture across the Mediterranean and Near East. Hellenistic art became more dramatic, emotional, and naturalistic, producing works like Laocoon and His Sons (c. 200 BCE) and the Venus de Milo (c. 150 BCE). The Hellenistic period is sometimes treated separately from classical Greek art, but it is the direct continuation of the classical tradition.
Polykleitos was a sculptor from Argos who wrote a treatise called the Kanon (Canon), now lost, in which he argued that beauty was a matter of mathematical proportion. He demonstrated his theory in a bronze statue called the Doryphoros (Spear-Bearer, c. 440 BCE). The original bronze is lost, but it survives in Roman marble copies. The figure stands in contrapposto, with the weight on the right leg, the left heel raised. Every body part relates to every other by a system of ratios: the finger to the palm, the palm to the wrist, the wrist to the forearm. A 2026 article in Greek Reporter notes that "Polykleitos believed that beauty was objective and came down to hard, calculable mathematics." Read the article at Greek Reporter.
Phidias was the artistic director of the Periclean building program on the Acropolis. He oversaw the construction of the Parthenon (447-432 BCE) and sculpted its colossal cult statue of Athena Parthenos, a gold and ivory figure approximately 12 meters tall. The Parthenon's sculptural decoration, including the frieze showing the Panathenaic procession and the metopes showing the battle of Lapiths and centaurs, was executed under his supervision. The Elgin Marbles, now in the British Museum, are panels from this frieze. Phidias also created the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Praxiteles worked in the Late Classical period and introduced a softer, more sensual approach to the human form. His Hermes and the Infant Dionysus (c. 340 BCE, Archaeological Museum of Olympia) shows Hermes leaning against a tree trunk, his weight on one leg, holding the baby Dionysus. The figure is more graceful and less muscular than Polykleitos's work. Praxiteles also created the Aphrodite of Knidos (c. 350 BCE), the first known life-size female nude in Greek sculpture. The original is lost, but Roman copies survive.
Lysippos was the court sculptor of Alexander the Great and the most prolific Greek sculptor, reportedly producing 1,500 works. His Apoxyomenos (The Scraper, c. 330 BCE) shows an athlete scraping oil from his arm with a strigil. The figure extends its arm forward, breaking the frontal plane and engaging the viewer's space in a way earlier Greek sculpture did not. Lysippos also introduced a new proportional system: his figures were taller and more slender than the Polykleitan canon, with smaller heads (one-eighth of total height rather than one-seventh).
Look for contrapposto first. If a figure stands with weight on one leg and the hips and shoulders tilt in opposite directions, you are looking at a post-480 BCE Greek statue or a work influenced by one. The engaged (weight-bearing) leg is straight. The free leg is relaxed, often slightly bent with the heel raised.
Look at the face. Early Classical faces are expressionless, a quality art historians call the Severe style. The archaic smile is gone. High Classical faces show calm and control. Hellenistic faces show emotion: pain, ecstasy, fear.
Look at the proportion system. Polykleitan figures are stocky and muscular, with broad shoulders and a head that is one-seventh of body height. Lysippan figures are more elongated, with smaller heads and longer limbs. Most surviving Greek sculpture is actually Roman copies of Greek bronzes. The Romans preferred marble, which is why so many "Greek" statues in museums are marble versions of lost bronze originals.
Greek classical art was the foundation of Western art. The Romans copied it obsessively, and most surviving Greek bronzes are known only through Roman marble versions. During the Renaissance, Italian artists excavated Greek and Roman sculpture and revived contrapposto. Donatello's David (c. 1440) was the first free-standing nude sculpture since antiquity, and it stands in contrapposto. Michelangelo's David (1504) is a direct descendant of the Polykleitan tradition, with its idealized body and weight-shift pose.
The Greek canon of proportions influenced Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man (c. 1490), which mapped the human body onto geometric forms. The Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian architectural orders developed by the Greeks remain the basis of Western architectural vocabulary, visible in everything from Renaissance churches to American government buildings.
The Acropolis Museum in Athens holds the Kritios Boy and the Caryatids from the Erechtheion. The British Museum holds the Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon. The Louvre holds the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. The National Archaeological Museum in Athens has the Riace Bronzes on display (housed in Reggio Calabria, Italy, where they were found). The Vatican Museums hold the Laocoon and the Apollo Belvedere, both Roman copies of Greek originals.
