Etching was invented by a man who decorated armor. Daniel Hopfer worked in Augsburg, Germany, in the 1490s, using acid to etch ornamental designs onto steel plates and helmets. At some point around 1500, he had an idea that seems obvious in retrospect but was not obvious at the time: if you can etch a design into a metal plate, you can ink that plate and press it onto paper to make a print. How Etching Works: The Chemistry of a Drawing
The core principle of etching is that acid dissolves metal. A copper or zinc plate is polished smooth and coated with a thin layer of acid-resistant material called the ground. Traditional grounds are made from wax, asphaltum, and rosin, melted onto the warm plate and spread into an even film. The artist draws through this ground with an etching needle, a sharp steel point that exposes the metal beneath. Every line drawn becomes a channel for acid.
The plate is then immersed in an acid bath. Historically, nitric acid or hydrochloric acid was used. Modern printmakers often use ferric chloride, which is less toxic and produces a smoother bite. The acid eats into the exposed metal, deepening the drawn lines. The longer the plate sits in the acid, the deeper and darker the lines will print. An etcher can control tonal range by removing the plate from the acid, covering certain lines with stop-out varnish, and returning the plate to the bath for additional biting. This staged process allows for lines of varying depth and darkness within a single plate.
What makes etching different from engraving is the drawing surface. An engraver pushes a burin through solid metal, which requires considerable force and precision. An etcher draws through soft wax, which requires no more pressure than drawing on paper. This is why etched lines look like drawn lines. Origins and History
Etching grew out of armor decoration. Goldsmiths and armorers in 15th-century Germany and Italy used acid to etch designs into metal surfaces, a technique that goes back to late antiquity. Daniel Hopfer (c. 1470-1536) was the first to apply this process to printmaking. His early etchings were made on iron plates, which produced rough, dark lines. The switch from iron to copper plates happened in the Netherlands around 1520. Lucas van Leyden was among the first to etch on copper, which is softer and produces finer, cleaner lines than iron. Daniel Hopfer (c. 1470-1536)
Hopfer is the inventor of etching as a printmaking technique. Working as an armor decorator in Augsburg, he adapted the acid-etching process used on steel armor to produce prints on paper. His early works on iron plates have a rough, vigorous quality. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Albertina Museum jointly organized the 2019-2020 exhibition The Renaissance of Etching, which traced Hopfer's innovation and its rapid spread across Europe. As Met curator Nadine M. Orenstein noted, Durer's adoption of etching gave the technique instant credibility: "Whatever he did, people were looking at."
Albrecht Durer (1471-1528)
Durer produced a small number of etchings, including The Agony in the Garden (1515), working on iron plates. His etchings are less famous than his engravings, but they demonstrate how quickly a master draftsman could adapt the new medium. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)
Rembrandt is the greatest etcher in the history of the medium. He produced approximately 300 etchings, often combining etching with drypoint and aquatint-like tonal effects. The Three Crosses (1653) exists in multiple states, each dramatically reworked, showing how Rembrandt treated the copper plate as a living surface that could be revised and reimagined. Christ Healing the Sick (c. 1648), known as "The Hundred Guilder Print," combines etched lines with drypoint burr to create tonal passages of extraordinary depth. Francisco Goya (1746-1828)
Goya used etching combined with aquatint to create the most politically powerful prints in Western art. Los Caprichos (1799), a series of 80 prints, satirized Spanish society, the clergy, and superstition. Los Desastres de la Guerra (1810-1820) depicted the horrors of the Peninsular War with unflinching directness. In 2024, the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid exhibited all 213 of Goya's surviving copper plates together for the first time, alongside prints pulled from them. The plates had been restored by removing 19th-century steel facing to reveal the original copper surfaces. Whistler was the central figure of the Etching Revival. His French Set (1858) and Thames Set (1859-1861) reestablished etching as a fine art medium after a century of association with commercial reproduction. Whistler treated each impression as a unique work of art, varying the inking and printing to produce different effects from the same plate. How to Spot an Etching
The telltale sign of an etching is the quality of the line. Etched lines are freer, more varied, and more spontaneous than engraved lines. They swell and taper with the pressure of the needle. They change direction without the mechanical precision that a burin produces. If a line looks like it was drawn with a pen rather than carved with a chisel, it is probably etched.
Look for plate tone. Etchers often leave a thin film of ink on the surface of the plate rather than wiping it completely clean, producing a subtle tonal haze that fills the background. Rembrandt used this effect extensively, varying the wipe from impression to impression. Etchings are typically printed on dampened paper, which is forced into the incised lines under the pressure of a rolling press. The plate leaves a visible indentation on the paper called the platemark. If you see a platemark, you are looking at an intaglio print, either an etching, an engraving, a drypoint, or a mezzotint.
