Hatching: Parallel Lines for Value and Shading in Drawing

Hatching is the drawing technique of using closely spaced parallel lines to create tonal value. From Durer to Rembrandt, learn how this fundamental technique works.

The oldest known drawing in human history is a piece of crosshatching. In the Blombos Caves of South Africa, archaeologists found an ochre crayon mark on a silcrete flake, dated to approximately 100,000 years ago. The mark is a series of intersecting lines, hatched and crosshatched, made with a red ochre crayon. It may be a symbol, a counting system, or an abstract pattern. What it is, unambiguously, is hatching. The technique of building tone from parallel lines is not just old. It is possibly the oldest drawing technique there is.

Hatching is the technique of creating tonal value and shading by drawing closely spaced parallel lines. The lines follow the form they describe, wrapping around curves and changing direction to match the surface. By varying the spacing, thickness, and density of the lines, the artist controls how dark or light an area appears. More lines, closer together, produce darker values. Fewer lines, farther apart, produce lighter values. The technique is fundamental to drawing, printmaking, and any medium where tone must be built from marks rather than blended.

What Is Hatching and How Does It Work?

Hatching creates the illusion of tonal value on a white surface using only black lines. The principle is optical. When parallel black lines are spaced closely enough, the eye blends the black of the lines and the white of the paper into a perceived gray. The closer the lines, the darker the gray. The farther apart, the lighter. This optical mixing happens at a distance. Up close, you see individual lines. Step back, and the lines dissolve into tone.

A formal definition of hatching was proposed in a research paper published by the Eurographics Association, which defines hatching as "the use of patches, where a patch is a group of roughly parallel curves that form a flexible, simple pattern." The paper identifies six purposes of hatching: value (brightness), form (three-dimensional shape), texture, symbolic device, compositional tool, and intrinsic visual appeal. The definition is designed to accommodate both human and computer-generated hatching, and it acknowledges the subjectivity involved in classifying marks as hatching versus other forms of line work. The key principle is that hatching lines should follow the form. If you are hatching a cylinder, the lines curve around it. If you are hatching a flat plane, the lines run straight. The direction of the lines communicates the orientation of the surface in space. This is why hatching is not just a tonal technique but a form-describing one. The same gray value can be produced by lines running in any direction, but only lines that follow the form will communicate the three-dimensional shape of the object.

Origins and History

Hatching has been used since prehistory, as the Blombos Cave evidence demonstrates. In Western art, hatching as a systematic technique emerged in the Middle Ages and developed rapidly in the 15th century with the rise of printmaking. Engraving and woodcut, the two dominant print media of the 15th century, are inherently linear. The artist cannot blend tone on a printing plate the way a painter blends on canvas. Tone must be built from lines, and hatching is the most efficient way to do that.

A 2025 study published on Zenodo traced the evolution of hatching techniques in European art, examining how the technique developed from medieval manuscript illumination through the printmaking renaissance of the 15th and 16th centuries. The research is available at Zenodo.

The pioneers of hatching in printmaking were Master E.S. (active c. 1450-1467) and Martin Schongauer (c. 1450-1491) in engraving, and Erhard Reuwich (active c. 1480s) and Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519) in woodcut. These artists developed the systematic use of parallel lines to model form and create tonal range in prints. Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) perfected the technique, bringing a level of precision and control to hatching that has never been surpassed. Durer's engravings, including Melencolia I (1514) and Saint Jerome in His Study (1514), demonstrate hatching that simultaneously describes form, texture, light, and atmosphere.

A 2025 study published in the journal Arsir evaluated the effectiveness of linear shading versus cross-hatching in depicting volume in architectural sketches. The research, conducted with architecture students, found that cross-hatching was more effective at producing volumetric images with depth and realistic lighting, though students found it more difficult and time-consuming. Key Artists and Practitioners

Albrecht Durer (1471-1528)

Durer is the supreme master of hatching in Western art. His engravings use hatching to describe form, texture, and light with a precision that borders on the impossible. In Melencolia I (1514), the hatching on the winged figure's face models the bone structure with anatomical accuracy while simultaneously conveying the psychological weight of melancholy. In Saint Jerome in His Study (1514), the hatching describes the fall of light through a window onto a desk, the texture of wood grain, and the soft fur of a lion. Durer's hatching is not just tonal. It is descriptive, atmospheric, and expressive simultaneously.

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)

Rembrandt used hatching in his etchings to create some of the most emotionally powerful prints in Western art. His Self-Portrait in a Cap, Wide-eyed and Open-mouthed (c. 1628-1630) is a miniature etching that uses hatching and cross-hatching to define the artist's features with startling intimacy. In Reclining Female Nude (c. 1658), the hatching envelops the figure in dim light, becoming almost pitch black in the background. The subtle variation of tone in the skin, built through cross-hatching, paired with simple hatching on the sheet below, demonstrates Rembrandt's mastery of the technique. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

Leonardo used hatching extensively in his drawings, particularly in his anatomical studies and technical drawings. His hatching is characteristically left-handed, with lines running from upper left to lower right, the natural stroke direction for a left-handed artist. Leonardo's hatching in studies like the Vitruvian Man (c. 1490) and his anatomical drawings of the human body demonstrates how the technique can describe both surface form and internal structure.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)

Hokusai, the Japanese ukiyo-e master, used hatching in his woodblock prints in a way that differs from the Western tradition. Japanese printmaking did not develop hatching as a tonal system in the same way European engraving did, but Hokusai used parallel lines to describe texture, water, and atmospheric effects. The Great Wave off Kanagawa (c. 1831) uses hatched lines to describe the curves of the wave and the texture of the water surface, adapting the technique to the flat, decorative aesthetic of Japanese printmaking.

Mary Cassatt (1844-1926)

Cassatt, an American Impressionist working in Paris, used hatching in her drypoint prints to create soft, intimate portraits. The Drawing Lesson is a drypoint self-portrait showing Cassatt teaching her daughter to draw, with faces rendered in quick hatched lines paired with simple outlines. Cassatt's hatching demonstrates that the technique is not limited to tight, controlled work. It can be loose, gestural, and spontaneous.

How to Spot Hatching in a Drawing or Print

Look for parallel lines. If you see a drawing or print where tone is built from rows of lines running in the same direction, you are looking at hatching. The lines may be straight or curved, thick or thin, closely spaced or far apart. What makes them hatching rather than random marks is their parallelism and their relationship to the form they describe.

In a Durer engraving, the hatching is so fine and controlled that from a distance it looks like smooth tone. Get close to a Durer print in a museum and you will see that the smooth surfaces are built from thousands of individual lines, each one placed with precision. In a Rembrandt etching, the hatching is more varied and expressive, with lines that change direction, thickness, and density to describe different surfaces and lighting conditions.

In drawings, hatching is often visible as the primary shading method. Look at Leonardo's anatomical drawings in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, where the left-handed hatching describes the curvature of muscles and bones. Look at Rembrandt's pen-and-ink drawings, where hatching builds both form and atmosphere with remarkable economy.

Hatching is the foundation for several other techniques in this glossary. Cross hatching is the direct extension of hatching, adding a second layer of lines at an angle to the first to produce darker values. Contour drawing uses line to describe form, and hatching is often combined with contour to add tonal information to a linear drawing. Stippling is a related technique that uses dots instead of lines to build tone, and it shares with hatching the principle of optical mixing. The British Museum in London has the largest collection of Durer prints in the world, including Melencolia I and Saint Jerome in His Study. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has an extensive collection of Rembrandt etchings, where you can see hatching at every scale from miniature self-portraits to large landscape prints.
