Look at a stipple drawing from a few inches away and you see nothing but dots. Thousands of them, scattered across the paper like a fine rain. Step back two feet and the dots vanish. In their place, a face emerges, fully modeled with light and shadow, every wrinkle and pore described by nothing more than the density of marks. This optical trick, building form from a field of discrete points, is stippling, and it is one of the most labor-intensive drawing techniques ever devised.
Stippling is the creation of value and texture in a drawing using small dots of a single color. The denser the dots, the darker the apparent tone. The sparser the dots, the lighter. The technique is related to but distinct from pointillism, which uses dots of different colors to achieve optical color mixing. Stippling uses dots of one color, usually black ink, to build tonal range through density alone.

What Is Stippling and How Does It Work?
Stippling works on a simple principle. The human eye averages small marks at viewing distance, perceiving dense clusters as dark tones and sparse clusters as light tones. A stipple drawing has no lines and no continuous tones. Every value in the image, from the deepest shadow to the brightest highlight, is produced by the distribution of individual dots. The white of the paper serves as the lightest value, and the density of ink dots determines everything else.
The technique demands patience and control. A single stipple drawing can contain tens of thousands of dots, each placed individually with a pen, a stylus, or a fine brush. The artist controls value by adjusting three variables: dot size, dot spacing, and dot count. Larger dots placed close together produce dark tones. Smaller dots placed far apart produce light tones. The transitions between dark and light areas must be gradual, which means the artist must constantly adjust dot density across the surface with no hard boundaries.
A 2019 study published in Computers & Graphics analyzed the characteristics of traditional hand-made stippling to develop better digital reproduction methods. The researchers identified key qualitative criteria that distinguish hand-made stippling from computer-generated alternatives: hand-made stippling shows irregular dot spacing that avoids visible regularity artifacts, dot sizes that vary with tone, and a distribution that follows the contours of the subject rather than a mathematical pattern. Origins and History
Stippling began as a printmaking technique, not a drawing technique. Stipple engraving emerged in the mid-18th century as a method for producing tonal effects on copper plates. The engraver used a flicking motion with the burin to create short lines or dots in the metal plate. Ink filled these indentations, and the press transferred them to paper. The technique was developed to imitate the soft tonal gradations of chalk drawings and wash illustrations, which linear engraving could not reproduce.
The French engraver Jean-Charles François (1717-1769) is credited with developing the crayon manner and stipple engraving in the 1740s. His goal was to reproduce the look of chalk and pastel drawings in print. Gilles Demarteau (1722-1776) extended the technique at the French court. By the 1770s, stipple engraving had spread to England, where Francesco Bartolozzi (1728-1815) became its most famous practitioner. Bartolozzi produced hundreds of stipple engravings after paintings by Angelica Kauffman, Cipriani, and other Royal Academy artists, and his work made stipple engraving fashionable in late 18th-century London.
As a drawing technique, stippling developed alongside pen-and-ink illustration in the 19th and 20th centuries. Scientific illustrators adopted it because it reproduces well in print: a stipple drawing can be photographed and printed at any size without losing tonal information, unlike continuous-tone drawings that require halftone screening. Francesco Bartolozzi (1728-1815)
Bartolozzi was the most celebrated stipple engraver of the 18th century. Born in Italy, he moved to London in 1764 and was appointed Engraver to the King in 1764. His stipple engravings after Angelica Kauffman's designs, such as The Birth of Shakespeare (c. 1785), show the technique at its most refined. The tonal gradations in his prints are so smooth that they resemble chalk drawings rather than engravings made from thousands of individual flicks of the burin.
Georges Seurat (1859-1891)
Seurat is not a stipple artist in the strict sense, but his pointillism is the most famous dot-based technique in art history. A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884-1886, Art Institute of Chicago) uses dots of different colors to achieve optical mixing. The distinction matters: Seurat's dots are colored and serve a color-theory purpose, while stippling uses monochrome dots for tonal control. But the visual principle is the same, and Seurat's work is the point of reference most people bring to any discussion of dot-based art.
Scientific Illustrators
Stippling is the standard technique for pen-and-ink scientific illustration. Botanical illustrators at Kew Gardens, the Smithsonian, and other institutions use stippling to describe plant specimens with tonal accuracy that line work alone cannot achieve. Anatomical illustrators use it to render the subtle gradations of tissue and bone. The technique reproduces cleanly in academic journals and textbooks, where halftone images may lose detail. Pablo Jurado Ruiz, a Spanish artist, produces portrait drawings made entirely of black ink dots, some containing over a million individual marks. His work demonstrates that stippling can function as a standalone art form, not just a reproductive or scientific tool. The patience required is extraordinary: a single portrait can take hundreds of hours.
How to Practice Stippling
Start with a pen with a consistent nib, such as a Sakura Pigma Micron 005 or 01. Use smooth paper that will not bleed or feather. Choose a simple subject with clear tonal range: a sphere, an egg, or a smooth stone. Begin by establishing the darkest area with closely spaced dots. Then work outward, gradually increasing the spacing between dots as you move toward the lightest areas. The lightest areas may have only a few dots, or none at all.
The key is consistency. Each dot should be the same size, applied with the same pressure. Vary the density, not the dot size. If you vary the dot size as well, the tonal transitions become harder to control. Work slowly. Stippling is not a technique for rapid results. A palm-sized drawing can take several hours.
A common mistake is to start stippling in one area and work systematically across the page. This produces uneven tonal relationships because you cannot compare values across the whole drawing until it is complete. Instead, establish the darkest darks and lightest lights first, then fill in the middle tones relative to those extremes. This is the same approach recommended for tonal drawing and chiaroscuro.
Stippling is often confused with pointillism, but the distinction is clear: stippling uses monochrome dots for tonal value, while pointillism uses colored dots for optical color mixing. Hatching and cross hatching use lines instead of dots to build value, and the two approaches can be combined in a single drawing. Stippling also relates to tonal drawing in its focus on value masses rather than contours.
