Antiquity and the Roman Period
The earliest still-life paintings come from ancient Egypt, where food and household items were depicted on tomb walls to provide for the deceased in the afterlife. But the most sophisticated ancient still lifes are Roman. The wall paintings from Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, include precise depictions of fruit, glass vessels, and dead game. The Dutch Golden Age (1580-1672)
Still life as a distinct genre emerged in the Netherlands in the late 16th and 17th centuries. Dutch painters developed several sub-genres. Breakfast pieces (ontbijtjes) showed simple meals of bread, cheese, and herring on a table. Banketjes or banquet pieces showed lavish spreads of fruit, game, and wine.
