The Renaissance workshop, or atelier, provided apprentices and journeymen with studio space, materials, and instruction in exchange for labor. Artists-in-residence receive a $150 stipend per week, communal meals on weekdays, travel arrangements within the United States, and lodging onsite. The ZKM Rauschenberg Residencies offer a different model, focused on the intersection of art and technology. The residency lasts three months, from October to December 2026, plus a final rehearsal week with a public showcase in January 2027. Artists receive a 4,000 euro scholarship, up to 2,500 euros for material costs, 1,000 euros for travel expenses, accommodation in a ZKM artist apartment, and mentoring and support. The residency is open to artists working at the intersection of performative art and creative technology, with a focus on digital theater and interactive performance.
The MADE Program residency in Siracusa offers travel reimbursement, accommodation for 20 days, production and material costs up to 500 euros, access to the academy's spaces and facilities, curatorial and institutional support, and inclusion in a final collective exhibition. The program is open to international artists and collectives across all disciplines, with no age restrictions or formal educational requirements.
Most residency programs require a formal application. The typical application includes a portfolio of recent work, a CV or resume, a project or research proposal describing what the artist intends to develop during the residency, and sometimes a proposal for a workshop, talk, or public event. Some programs require letters of recommendation. Application deadlines are typically 6 to 12 months before the residency period.
Selection criteria vary by program but generally include the quality and coherence of the artist's work, the clarity and feasibility of the proposal, the potential for the residency to benefit the artist's career, and the fit between the artist's practice and the residency's focus or resources. Competition for well-funded residencies is intense. The Joan Mitchell Center opens applications from April 7 to May 30, 2025, for 2026 residencies, giving applicants approximately seven weeks to submit their materials.
Residencies matter because they address the most fundamental challenge facing artists: the need for uninterrupted time and space to work. Most artists cannot afford to maintain a full-time studio practice while earning a living. Residencies provide a period, whether three weeks or six months, during which the artist's only job is to make work. This is not a luxury. It is the condition under which the most ambitious and experimental art gets made.
Residencies also provide community. Artists who work in isolation often lack the feedback, dialogue, and critical engagement that push their work forward.
