In 2026, the Beaux-Arts de Paris mounted an exhibition called L'esprit de l'atelier, "the spirit of the studio." It brought together 16 artists who had all trained in the same studio at the Beaux-Arts de Paris under the painter Djamel Tatah, who taught there for fifteen years. The exhibition included more than 120 works: paintings, drawings, sculptures, weavings, and installations. What connected these artists was not a shared style. Their work ranged from figuration to abstraction, from reality to fiction. What connected them was a shared experience of training and mentorship in a studio where an artist-teacher guided each student in developing their own practice. An atelier is an artist's studio. The word also refers to the studio-based teaching model that dominated art education from the Renaissance through the 20th century. In the atelier system, a master artist opened their studio to students, who learned by working alongside the master, observing their process, and receiving individual critique. The atelier was simultaneously a workplace, a school, and a social institution. It was where art was made, where artists were trained, and where professional networks were formed. The system persisted at the Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris into the 2000s and continues to influence art education today.

The word atelier comes from the Old French astier, meaning a carpenter's workshop. By the 17th century, it had come to mean an artist's studio in French, and the term spread across European languages. An atelier is both a physical space and a social organization. Socially, it is a hierarchy of people: the master at the top, then assistants and advanced students, then apprentices and beginners.
The atelier as a teaching model predates the formal academy system. In the medieval and Renaissance periods, artists learned their craft through apprenticeship in a master's workshop. A young apprentice, often around 12 years old, would enter a master's studio and spend years learning to grind pigments, prepare panels, and mix paints before being allowed to touch a canvas. The apprentice advanced to journeyman, then to the point where they could produce a masterpiece to qualify as a master themselves. When the academies were established, they adopted the atelier as their teaching unit. The Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris was the most influential institution operating the atelier system. The study described how each atelier assembled students of all years under the responsibility of a chef d'atelier, who was sometimes assisted by another teacher and by the massier, a student responsible for studio logistics. A 2025-2026 seminar at the EHESS in Paris, led by the historian and philosopher of art Agnes Callu, examined the artist's atelier as a social and institutional structure from 1880 to 2020. The seminar approached the atelier through the lens of organizational sociology, treating it as a structure that is functional because it is regulated by explicit or symbolic codes, categorical because it is governed by habits that regulate exchange values, and productive because it shapes what Callu called "creative work."
The seminar identified the atelier as the "first cultural institution" in an artist's career. A 2025 study published on arXiv presented a method called PATCH (Pairwise Assignment Training for Classifying Heterogeneity) that used machine learning to identify individual artistic practice within workshop paintings. The researchers applied the method to two paintings by El Greco, one considered entirely by the master and one previously thought to feature workshop participation.
