In 1648, a young King Louis XIV of France signed a decree establishing the Academie royale de peinture et de sculpture. The new institution was placed under the protection of Chancellor Seguier and organized around the painter Charles Le Brun. Its founding purpose was to emancipate the artist from the guilds, to distinguish the painter from the artisan. For the next 145 years, until the French Revolution abolished it in 1793, the Academie royale controlled art education, art theory, and art exhibitions in France. It amassed a collection of more than 15,000 artworks, including reception pieces that young artists submitted for examination to become full members. That collection is now dispersed across the Louvre, Versailles, and the Beaux-Arts de Paris.
An art academy is an official institution that sets standards for art education, practice, and exhibition. Academies were established by monarchs, governments, and cultural elites to regulate artistic production, train artists according to approved methods, and define what counted as good art. The academy system dominated European art from the 17th century through the 19th century. It established the hierarchy of genres, controlled the Salon exhibition, and trained generations of artists in drawing, anatomy, perspective, and classical composition. The academies were also the institutions that the avant-garde rebelled against, and their decline paralleled the rise of modernism.

An art academy was a state-sanctioned institution that combined three functions: education, standard-setting, and exhibition. The academy trained students in drawing from life, anatomy, perspective, and the classical rules of composition. It set standards through its membership system: to become a full member, an artist had to submit a reception piece, a work judged by existing members to demonstrate sufficient skill. And it organized public exhibitions, most notably the Paris Salon, which was the academy's primary venue for presenting contemporary art to the public.
The academy was distinct from the guild system it replaced. Guilds were organizations of craftsmen that controlled trade practices, apprenticeships, and quality standards. The academy elevated the artist above the artisan by grounding art in intellectual and theoretical foundations rather than craft alone. The Academie royale de peinture et de sculpture was founded specifically to be independent of the powerful Guild of Saint-Luc, the Parisian painters' guild. This separation of the artist from the artisan was the academy's founding ideological claim.
The academy also maintained a hierarchy of genres. History painting, which depicted scenes from the Bible, classical mythology, or historical events, occupied the top position. Portraiture came second, followed by genre painting, landscape, and still life. This hierarchy was not merely aesthetic. It determined which subjects received the largest state commissions, the highest prizes, and the most prestigious teaching positions.
The Academie royale de peinture et de sculpture was founded in 1648. According to the official history of the Academie des Beaux-Arts, the institution was initially composed of twelve "elders" around Charles Le Brun. It opened its doors without restrictions other than those of talent and morality: 14 women were elected as members, and Antoine Coypel was elected at the age of 20. Based in the Louvre, the Academie grew to 180 members. The French Revolution abolished all academies in 1793. The Institut national des sciences et des arts replaced them, with a class for literature and fine arts that became the precursor to the modern Academie des Beaux-Arts. In 1816, a royal decree restored the names of the academies and established the Academie des Beaux-Arts as a merger of the former Academie de peinture et de sculpture (founded 1648), the Academie de musique (founded 1669), and the Academie d'architecture (founded 1671). The new Academie comprised 50 members, 10 foreign associates, and 40 correspondents.
Today, the Academie des Beaux-Arts is one of the five academies of the Institut de France. As of 2025, the president is Coline Serreau, a French actress and film director. The institution has evolved to include sections for cinema, audiovisual, photography, and engraving, reflecting the expansion of what counts as fine art beyond the original categories of painting, sculpture, and architecture.
Over its 145-year existence, the Academie royale amassed a collection of more than 15,000 artworks. The core of the collection consisted of reception pieces, works that young artists presented to an academic jury to become members. Because almost all prominent artists of the old regime were members, the collection included iconic works like Antoine Watteau's Pilgrimage to the Isle of Cythera (1717), Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin's Ray (1728), and Jean-Baptiste Greuze's Septimius Severus and Caracalla (1769). These works offer insight into the institution's aesthetic values and its standards for admission.
A 2025 research project led by the DFK Paris (Deutsches Forum fur Kunstgeschichte), in collaboration with the Louvre, the Institut national d'histoire de l'art, and the Beaux-Arts de Paris, has been reconstructing the Academie's dispersed collection using digital methods. The project's first phase involved building a database establishing what objects originally comprised the collection and where they are preserved now. A book series launched with a volume on reception pieces, published in July 2025. A 2025 volume on reception pieces, published by arthistoricum.net, revealed that the rituals associated with the reception process were anything but well-defined. The history of academic reception was marked by anomalies, irregularities, and bent rules. The progression from student through agreement to reception was inherited from guild practice, in which an apprentice would achieve journeyman status and then work toward creating a masterpiece under supervision. The academic practice of voting on admissions echoed guild practice, and there were debates about whether reception pieces should be produced in the Academie's space and under supervision, as in the guilds. The Royal Academy of Arts was founded in London in 1768 by King George III. Its first president was Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), whose annual Discourses on Art laid out the academic theory that guided the institution. Reynolds argued that art should aspire to the "grand style," an idealized approach derived from the study of classical antiquity and the Old Masters. The Royal Academy established a school that offered free instruction in drawing, painting, and sculpture, and it held an annual exhibition that became the British equivalent of the Paris Salon.
The Royal Academy's reception piece system, known as the "diploma work," required newly elected members to submit a work for the Academy's collection. This system, inherited from the French academic model and ultimately from the guild tradition, is still in use today. London's Royal Academy is one of the few institutions that maintains a direct link to the academic traditions of the 18th century.
The French and British academies were the most influential, but academies were established across Europe. The Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence was founded in 1563 under the patronage of Cosimo I de' Medici, with Michelangelo as an honorary member. The Accademia di San Luca in Rome, founded in 1577, was named after Saint Luke, the patron saint of painters, who was traditionally believed to have painted the first portrait of the Virgin Mary. The Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin was founded in 1696. The Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg was founded in 1757 and trained generations of Russian artists.
The Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, often called the Beaux-Arts de Paris, is the direct descendant of the academic school. It remains one of the most influential art schools in the world. The academy's relationship to modern art was adversarial. The academic system rewarded polish, classical subject matter, and technical finish. The avant-garde rejected all three. Edouard Manet's flat surfaces, the Impressionists' loose brushwork, and the Post-Impressionists' non-naturalistic color were all direct challenges to the academic standards that the academy had codified and enforced.
The Ecole des Beaux-Arts maintained its traditional teaching methods well into the 20th century. A study published in the journal Marges documented how the Beaux-Arts de Paris kept an academic curriculum based on classical disciplines even as innovative schools like the Bauhaus (founded 1919) and Black Mountain College (founded 1933) adopted diversified, contemporary approaches. The traditional atelier system, in which a chef d'atelier, an artist-teacher, supervised students of all years in a single studio, persisted at the Beaux-Arts into the 2000s. Le Brun was the founding figure of the Academie royale de peinture et de sculpture and its dominant personality for four decades. He defined the institution's aesthetic standards, organized its teaching curriculum, and served as First Painter to the King. Le Brun's influence on French art was so complete that during his lifetime, the Academie's taste was indistinguishable from his own.
Reynolds was the first president of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the author of its theoretical foundation. His fifteen Discourses on Art, delivered annually to students between 1769 and 1790, argued that art should aspire to idealized beauty derived from the study of antiquity and the Old Masters. Reynolds's theory was the British academy's equivalent of the French academic doctrine.
Chardin was a member of the Academie royale who painted still lifes and genre scenes, subjects that occupied the lower end of the academic hierarchy. His Ray (1728), his reception piece, was a still life of a skate fish and kitchen utensils. The Academie accepted it, but Chardin's career demonstrates that the hierarchy of genres was not always rigidly enforced. His work was admired by Diderot and hangs in the Louvre today.
The academy is connected to the entire institutional structure of European art from the 17th century onward. The Paris Salon was the academy's exhibition arm. The Salon des Refuses was the first major challenge to the academy's authority. The atelier was the teaching unit within the academy system. The academy system is gone, but its legacy is everywhere in the museums we visit.
