The mask of Tutankhamun, the gold face that stared out from the pharaoh's coffin in 1922 when Howard Carter opened it, was made by hammering a single sheet of gold from the back. The features, the headdress, the false beard, all were raised by pushing the metal outward from the reverse side. No casting, no carving, no addition of material. Just a flat sheet of gold and a hammer, worked with enough precision and patience to produce one of the most recognizable objects in the world. Repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal sheet is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. The metal is placed face-down on a soft surface, traditionally pitch or a mixture of resin and tallow, and the back is hammered with blunt punches to push the metal outward. The sheet is then turned over and the front is refined with chasing tools, which push the metal inward to sharpen details and flatten the background. Repousse and chasing are almost always used together: repousse raises the form, chasing defines it. The technique requires only simple tools and no loss of material, which made it economical as well as expressive. It has been used for over 5,000 years on gold, silver, copper, bronze, and other malleable metals.

What Is Repousse and How Does It Work?
Repousse begins with a flat sheet of annealed metal. Annealing, heating the metal to soften it and then allowing it to cool, is essential because hammering hardens the metal and makes it brittle. The artist must re-anneal the sheet periodically during work to prevent cracking.
The process starts with tracing. The artist draws the design on the front of the metal sheet with permanent ink, then turns the sheet over and places it face-down on a bed of pitch. A lining tool, a chisel-shaped punch, is used to trace the outline of the design from the back, pressing the metal into the pitch and creating a shallow raised contour on the front. This outline guides the subsequent work.
The artist then uses rounded repousse punches and a hammer to push the metal outward from the back, raising the relief to the desired height. This is rough work: the goal is to move metal quickly, not to refine detail. The surrounding flat areas become distorted during this process and must be flattened later.
The sheet is then turned face-up on the pitch. Chasing tools, steel punches with shaped tips, are used to push the metal inward from the front, sharpening edges, defining details, and flattening the background. The combination of repousse from the back and chasing from the front allows the artist to build complex relief with precise control. The pitch serves a specific purpose. It is firm enough to support the metal against hammering but yielding enough to allow the metal to deform. When the metal is heated to remove it from the pitch, the pitch softens and releases. Different pitch formulations are used for different metals and temperatures: a harder pitch for fine work in gold, a softer one for large work in copper.
Repousse vs. Chasing vs. Embossing
These three terms are often confused. Repousse hammers from the back to push metal outward. Chasing hammers from the front to push metal inward and refine detail. Embossing uses mechanical means, typically a die and counter-die, to press a design into metal, producing a result that looks like repousse but without the handwork. The 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica distinguished repousse from embossing: "Embossing is also called repousse sur couille and estampage, but the latter consists of embossing by mechanical means and is therefore not to be considered as an art process." In practice, repousse and chasing are nearly always used together. A piece described as "repousse" was almost certainly chased as well. The terms are used together so often that "repousse and chasing" is the standard phrase in museum catalogues and conservation reports.
Origins and History
The Ancient Near East and Egypt
Repousse is one of the oldest metalworking techniques. By the 3rd millennium BCE, metalsmiths in the Middle East were using semi-mass production methods to create repousse designs in sheet gold. The simplest technique involved pressing gold sheet into designs carved in intaglio in stone, bone, or metal. More sophisticated methods used patterned punches, dating to the first half of the 2nd millennium BCE, to create repeated decorative elements.
Egyptian repousse from the Amarna period (c. 1400 BCE) used resin and mud as backing material. The mask of Tutankhamun (c. 1323 BCE) is the most famous example. The majority of the mask was formed by repousse from what appears to be a single sheet of gold. Lapis lazuli and other stones were inlaid in chased areas after the form was raised. The ceremonial beard, the Nekhbet vulture, and the Uraeus cobra were attached separately.
Ancient Greece and Rome
The Greeks developed repousse into a fine art. By 400 BCE, they were using beeswax as a filler to support thin metal during chasing. The bronze armour plates from the 3rd century BCE, including the shoulder-pieces from the Siris bronzes (4th century BCE, British Museum), show heroic figure groups beaten up from behind with punches until the heads and other portions are nearly detached from the background. The metal is almost as thin as paper, yet of constant thickness, with no sign of puncture.
The Bernay treasure (2nd century BCE, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris) includes silver vases with repousse decoration in mezzo-relief, beaten up in sections and soldered together. The Hildesheim treasure (discovered 1868) contains a patera with a superb repousse emblema of Minerva in high relief. Roman silver hoards, including the Mildenhall Treasure, the Hoxne Hoard, and the Berthouville Treasure, contain numerous pieces decorated with repousse and chasing.
The Celtic World
The Gundestrup cauldron, found in a Danish peat bog and dated to between 150 BCE and 1 CE, is one of the most spectacular repousse works from antiquity. The cauldron had thirteen separate silver panels with repousse relief lining the inside and outside. The panels show gods, animals, and ritual scenes, hammered from the back with extraordinary detail. The cauldron is a product of Celtic or Thracian craftsmanship and demonstrates that repousse was practiced across Europe, not just in the Mediterranean.
Medieval and Renaissance
Repousse continued through the medieval period. In the 11th century, Emperor Henry II presented an altar piece with repousse gold panels to Basel Cathedral, now in the Cluny Museum in Paris. Limoges became a center for repousse bronze production, manufacturing sepulchral figures that were affixed to wooden cores. By the Renaissance, the technique was largely the province of goldsmiths and silversmiths. Benvenuto Cellini, better known for his cast bronzes, also practiced repousse, and the technique was standard for ecclesiastical metalwork, ceremonial armor, and luxury tableware.
The Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty (1886) is the most famous large-scale repousse work. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, and the copper sheets were formed by repousse in the workshop of Gaget, Gauthier and Company in Paris. The copper skin, only 3/32 of an inch (2.4 mm) thick, was hammered into wooden molds to create the statue's surface. The sheets were then assembled over an iron armature designed by Gustave Eiffel. At 151 feet tall, the Statue of Liberty is the largest repousse work in the world and demonstrates that the technique, ancient as it is, can be applied at monumental scale.

The Mask of Tutankhamun (c. 1323 BCE)
The gold funerary mask of Tutankhamun, in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, is the most recognizable repousse work in existence. Formed from a single sheet of gold weighing over 10 kg, the mask shows the pharaoh's face with inlaid eyes of quartz and obsidian. The repousse technique allowed the goldsmith to create the three-dimensional form of the face, headdress, and beard without casting, preserving the metal's original weight and purity.
The Gundestrup Cauldron (150 BCE - 1 CE)
The Gundestrup Cauldron, in the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, is the largest surviving piece of European Iron Age silverwork. The repousse panels show a complex iconography of Celtic and possibly Indo-Iranian deities, demonstrating that repousse was used for narrative as well as decorative purposes.
The Siris Bronzes (4th century BCE)
The Siris bronzes, in the British Museum, are Greek armour plates with repousse decoration showing heroic figure groups. The shoulder-pieces are particularly remarkable: the figures are raised in such high relief that they are nearly detached from the background, yet the metal is paper-thin and of constant thickness.
Pre-Columbian Repousse
Pre-Columbian cultures in the Americas used repousse extensively. The Chavin culture of Peru (c. 900-200 BCE) made gold ornaments using repousse. The Lambayeque culture of coastal Peru (750-1375 CE) produced elaborately decorated silver beakers, shaped by repeated hammering and annealing. These objects demonstrate that repousse was developed independently in the Americas, not transmitted from the Old World.
Repousse is related to lost-wax casting as an alternative method for creating metal sculpture and decorative objects. Casting produces solid or hollow forms from molten metal; repousse shapes sheet metal by hammering. The two techniques are often combined: a cast body may have repousse details, or a repousse sheet may be applied to a cast core. Repousse connects to gold leaf and gilding, since thin gold sheet used for gilding can also be worked in repousse, and to patina, the surface treatment applied to finished metalwork. When you look at repousse work, look for the tool marks on the front surface. Chasing marks are often intentionally left visible, part of the design. On the back, if you can see it, you will find the rounded depressions left by the repousse punches.
