Look at Henri Matisse's Dance (I) (1909) and try to find the background. Five nude figures circle a green hilltop against a blue sky, and the figures fill so much of the canvas that the sky and ground are reduced to thin bands of color at the edges. The painting is almost all subject. That is positive space pushed to its limit, and it produces a feeling of physical pressure and ecstatic movement that a more balanced composition could never achieve.
Positive space is the area in an artwork occupied by the main subjects, forms, or elements. It is the figure in a portrait, the fruit in a still life, the tree in a landscape, the bronze in a sculpture. Everything else, the area around and between the subjects, is negative space. The two are interdependent. Change the positive space and you automatically change the negative space, and vice versa.

Every artwork divides into positive and negative space. Positive space is where the subject lives. In a two-dimensional work, it is the area covered by the drawn, painted, or printed marks that constitute the subject. In a three-dimensional work, it is the physical material of the sculpture itself. The negative space is everything else: the background, the gaps, the air around and through the form.
The distinction is not about light and dark. Positive space can be white and negative space black, or the reverse. In a charcoal drawing of a white sculpture on a black background, the sculpture is positive space even though it is the lighter area. The terms refer to spatial roles, not tonal values.
Positive space is also not limited to a single subject. In Vincent van Gogh's Oleanders (1888), the vase of flowers is the primary subject and occupies the main positive space, but the book resting on the table is also positive space, even though it is a secondary element. Anything the artist places as an object or form within the composition is positive space.
The ratio of positive to negative space is one of the most consequential compositional decisions an artist makes. A composition dominated by positive space feels crowded, intense, and energetic. Matisse's Dance (I) is an example. A composition with minimal positive space and large negative space feels isolated, calm, or contemplative. A lone figure in a vast empty landscape reads as lonely or serene depending on context. Neither approach is correct. The choice depends on what the artist wants the viewer to feel.
Medieval European art treated positive space differently than later periods. In the Lindisfarne Gospels (c. 700 CE), figures are flat and frontal, pressed against gold backgrounds with no spatial setting. The positive space is the figure, and the negative space is the gold leaf, which represents divine light rather than physical space. The composition has no depth because the subject is spiritual, not physical.
The Italian Renaissance (c. 1400-1600) transformed how artists handled positive space. With the invention of linear perspective, positive space became volumetric. Figures occupied convincing three-dimensional space, and the relationship between positive and negative space became architectural. Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper (1495-1498) places Christ and his disciples as positive space along a table, with the perspective lines of the room converging on Christ's head. The positive space is organized to direct the viewer's eye to the focal point.
Baroque painters used positive space theatrically. Caravaggio (1571-1610) filled his canvases with figures that emerge from darkness, the positive space lit by dramatic light against vast negative space of shadow. The Calling of Saint Matthew (c. 1599-1600) shows Matthew and his companions clustered at a table, a beam of light crossing from upper right to illuminate the positive space while the surrounding darkness fills the negative space.
The 19th century brought a shift. Edgar Degas (1834-1917) used positive space asymmetrically, placing figures off-center and letting negative space dominate. The Star: Dancer on Pointe (c. 1878-1880) shows a ballet dancer entering from the left, with a vast area of empty stage on the right. The small positive space of the dancer against the large negative space creates a feeling of isolation and grace.
The 20th century saw artists deliberately distort the positive-negative relationship. Matisse's Dance (I) (1909) maximizes positive space. Mark Rothko's color-field paintings, such as No. 61 (Rust and Blue) (1953), make the distinction between positive and negative space ambiguous. The floating rectangles of color are positive space, but they are so large and soft-edged that they function as environment rather than subject. The positive space becomes the negative space, and the viewer is immersed in color rather than looking at a figure against a ground.
Matisse pushed positive space to fill the canvas in Dance (I) (1909) and Music (1910). The figures in both paintings are large, simplified, and pressed to the edges of the canvas. The negative space is reduced to minimal bands of color. In his later paper cut-outs, such as The Snail (1953), Matisse made positive and negative space equal partners. The white shapes around the cut-paper forms function as forms themselves, and the distinction between subject and background dissolves.
Calder's hanging mobiles make positive space minimal and dynamic. The thin wires and small metal shapes of a Calder mobile are the positive space, and the negative space, the air around and between the elements, is vast. The effect changes depending on where the mobile is installed, because the negative space is different in every room. Calder proved that positive space does not need to be large or heavy to command attention. It needs to be precisely placed.
Moore's sculptures complicate the positive-negative distinction. His reclining figures are solid positive space, but Moore carved holes and voids into the forms, letting negative space pass through the sculpture. In Reclining Figure (1938), the cavities are as carefully shaped as the solid bronze. Moore said that "a hole can have as much meaning as a solid mass," and his work demonstrates that positive space is defined as much by what surrounds it as by what it is.
Hepworth created her first pierced sculpture in 1931 and made the interplay of positive and negative space central to her work from that point forward. Her sculptures are hollowed out, perforated, and open so that the interior void is as important as the solid material. She painted the concave interiors and stretched strings across openings, turning negative space into a visible, active element that shapes the positive form around it.
Escher built his career on figure-ground reversal, the formal term for what happens when positive and negative space trade places. In Sky and Water I (1938), birds at the top of the image dissolve into fish at the bottom, with the negative space of one becoming the positive space of the other. His tessellations are the most systematic exploration of the positive-negative relationship in art history. Every shape is simultaneously subject and background.
Start by identifying the subject. What is the artist drawing your attention to? That is the positive space. In a portrait, it is the face and body. In a still life, it is the objects. In a landscape, it may be the trees, mountains, or buildings. In abstract art, the positive space may be shapes, lines, or fields of color rather than recognizable subjects.
Next, estimate the ratio of positive to negative space. How much of the composition is subject and how much is everything else? A high ratio of positive space creates intensity and pressure. A low ratio creates isolation and calm. The ratio is not accidental. It is one of the artist's primary tools for controlling emotional response.
Look at where the positive space is placed. Is it centered? Off to one side? Pressed against the edge of the canvas? Placement affects how the viewer reads the work. A centered subject feels formal and stable. An off-center subject feels dynamic or unbalanced. A subject pressed to the edge feels trapped or constrained.
In sculpture, walk around the work. The positive space changes as you move. A sculpture that looks solid from one angle may reveal voids and openings from another. Henry Moore's and Barbara Hepworth's sculptures are designed to be experienced in the round, with the positive and negative space shifting as the viewer moves.
Positive space is half of a pair. Space is the broader element of art that encompasses both positive and negative space. Negative space drawing is a technique that trains artists to see the space around the subject rather than the subject itself. Composition is the arrangement of all elements, including the balance between positive and negative space. Form and shape are the elements that occupy positive space. Emphasis is the principle of directing the viewer's attention, which is closely tied to how positive space is arranged. To see positive space at its most aggressive, visit Matisse's Dance (I) at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The painting is over eight feet tall, and the figures fill the canvas so completely that the negative space feels like a frame around the positive space rather than a background. For the opposite approach, visit the Henry Moore Foundation in Hertfordshire, where Moore's reclining figures are displayed in the landscape he designed for them.
