A limited edition is a set of identical prints produced from a single matrix, a copper plate, a woodblock, a lithographic stone, a silkscreen, or a digital source, in a predetermined and fixed quantity. Once the edition is complete, the matrix is destroyed or cancelled so that no further impressions can be pulled. Each print is numbered as a fraction, such as 25/100, where the first number identifies the individual impression and the second indicates the total edition size. Prints are typically signed in pencil by the artist. The fixed quantity is the entire point. It is a contract of scarcity between the artist and the collector.

In intaglio processes like etching and drypoint, the copper plate can be scored with a deep line or physically destroyed. In lithography, the stone can be ground down. The practice of limiting editions emerged in the late 18th century with English mezzotint engravers, who began issuing small editions of proofs for collectors before the lettering or inscription below the image was added. These early proofs were the first time prints were deliberately produced in restricted quantities for a collecting audience. Before this, prints were typically produced in as many copies as the market would bear, with no formal edition size.
The systematic numbering of editions did not become standard until the early 20th century. The practice gained traction as printmaking shifted from commercial reproduction to fine art production. Artists like Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Marc Chagall worked with master printers in Paris to produce editions that were explicitly limited, numbered, and signed.
