Open Edition: Prints Without Limits, From Parrish to Print-on-Demand

In 1925, one out of every four households in the United States had a copy of Maxfield Parrish's Daybreak hanging on a wall. The painting, completed in 1922, was reproduced as an open edition art print and distributed by the millions through publishers and calendars. Between 1920 and the 1950s, millions of Parrish prints circulated across America, making him one of the most reproduced artists in history. The prints were not numbered. There was no fixed edition size. Anyone who wanted a copy could buy one, and the print run continued as long as demand persisted. This is the open edition: a print produced without a set limit, available to anyone who wants one, for as long as the publisher chooses to keep it in print.

An open edition is a set of prints produced from a single source without a predetermined cap on the total number. Unlike a limited edition, where the artist declares a fixed quantity and destroys the matrix after production, an open edition has no declared end point. Prints are produced as long as there is demand. They are typically not numbered, though they may be signed by the artist. The absence of scarcity is the defining feature. The trade-off is accessibility over exclusivity.

This entry covers the history of open editions, how they differ from limited editions, what role they play in the contemporary market, and why the digital age has given open editions new relevance.

What Is an Open Edition?

An open edition is a print run with no fixed limit on the number of impressions produced. The publisher or artist decides to keep the print available indefinitely, or until demand dries up. There is no numbering system because there is no total to count against. The print may be signed or unsigned. It may be produced by traditional printmaking methods or by digital printing. The key distinction from a limited edition is the absence of a declared, fixed quantity.

Open editions are typically priced lower than limited editions because they lack the scarcity premium. A limited edition of 50 by a given artist will almost always cost more than an open edition by the same artist, because the limited edition has a knowable, finite supply while the open edition does not. This does not mean open editions have no value. It means their value comes from the image and the artist's reputation, not from artificial scarcity.

Origins and History

Open editions predate limited editions by centuries. Before the late 18th century, when English mezzotint engravers began issuing small, numbered proof editions for collectors, prints were generally produced in whatever quantity the market would absorb. Albrecht Durer's woodcuts and engravings, produced in the early 16th century, were printed in runs that were not formally limited. Rembrandt's etchings were printed in small quantities, but the edition sizes were determined by practical constraints, the wear of the copper plate and the demand from buyers, not by a declared limit.

The modern open edition as a commercial product emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when advances in photomechanical reproduction made it possible to produce high-quality color prints at scale. Maxfield Parrish was the pivotal figure in popularizing the open edition art print. His career as a print artist began in 1915 when he was commissioned by Clarence A. Crane of Crane's Chocolates to design a candy box cover, which opened a new direction for his work. Between 1918 and 1932, Parrish produced illustrations annually for the Edison Mazda Lamp Division of General Electric, which published over twenty million copies of his works on calendars. The calendars were seen in homes, offices, and public spaces across America, and Parrish's name became synonymous with the images themselves. Ansel Adams took a different approach to the open edition. In 1958, Adams and his wife Virginia selected six photographs of Yosemite and offered them for sale through her family business, Best's Studio, in Yosemite National Park. The prints were made from Adams's original negatives by an assistant under his direction, in sufficiently large batches to keep them affordable. The collection, called the Ansel Adams Yosemite Special Edition Photographs, was never formally limited. Adams added more images to the set until it reached 30 at the time of his death in 1984. The prints are still made today by hand from Adams's original negatives, using his approach and methodology, and remain a mainstay of the Ansel Adams Gallery. Adams made special provisions for the Special Edition negatives to be held back from his archive so that the tradition of offering high-quality original art at affordable prices would continue. Open Editions vs. Limited Editions

The distinction between open and limited editions is not just about numbers. It is about the economic and cultural logic behind the production. A limited edition creates value through scarcity. The artist declares that only 50 copies will exist, and the market prices each copy accordingly. An open edition creates value through distribution. The image reaches as many people as possible, and the artist's reputation grows with each print sold.

There is a practical argument for open editions that has gained traction in the digital age. Print-on-demand technology has eliminated the traditional constraints that made open editions risky for artists. In the past, producing an open edition meant printing a large quantity upfront, storing the inventory, and hoping it sold. If it did not, the artist was left with boxes of unsold prints. Print-on-demand removes this problem. Prints are produced only when ordered, with zero inventory risk. The artist can offer a work indefinitely without upfront costs or storage concerns. The regulatory environment also favors open editions in some contexts. In the United States, selling limited editions across state lines or via the internet requires compliance with art print disclosure laws in 14 states. These regulations mandate specific record-keeping and disclosure of edition information. Open editions are exempt from these requirements, reducing administrative burden and legal liability for artists who sell online.

Key Artists and Open Editions

Maxfield Parrish

Parrish's Daybreak (1922) is the most famous open edition art print in American history. Reproductions outsold every other artist of the period, with the exception of Cezanne and Van Gogh. The wide distribution of Parrish's prints did not diminish his reputation. It built it. His images became part of the visual culture of America in a way that no limited edition could have achieved. Today, open edition Parrish prints are still sold by publishers and galleries, ensuring his work remains visible and accessible.

Ansel Adams

Adams's Yosemite Special Edition Photographs are the longest-running open edition in fine art photography. Produced continuously since 1958, the prints have introduced generations of visitors to fine art photography at an accessible price point. Adams was explicit about his intent: to present photography as affordable art and to showcase the environmental grandeur of Yosemite. The open edition format was central to this mission. The prints are still made by hand from Adams's original negatives in a wet darkroom, using silver gelatin printing, maintaining the quality standards he established.

Andy Warhol

Warhol's relationship with open editions is more complex. His screenprints were typically produced as limited editions, but his conceptual interest in mass production and repetition aligns with the logic of the open edition. Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans (1962), originally exhibited as 32 separate paintings, were later reproduced as posters and prints in open editions, blurring the line between fine art and commercial reproduction. The accessibility of these reproductions helped cement Warhol's images in popular culture.

Open Editions in the Digital Age

The print-on-demand revolution has changed the economics of open editions. Artists can now offer prints in multiple sizes and substrates, produce them only when ordered, and update the printing technology over time as better printers and inks become available. This flexibility was impossible in the era of offset lithography, where a print run of thousands had to be produced all at once on a single press.

The argument against open editions has traditionally been that they devalue the artist's work. If anyone can buy a print, the thinking goes, the prints lose their collectible status. But the evidence suggests otherwise. Parrish's open editions enhanced his legacy rather than diminishing it. Adams's open editions are still valued by collectors, even though they were never limited. The value of an open edition print is determined by the quality of the image and the reputation of the artist, not by artificial scarcity.

As one analysis noted, musicians do not cap album sales at 1,000 copies, and filmmakers do not limit viewings to 10,000 people. The question for visual artists is whether restricting reach and income through artificial scarcity serves the work or just the market. For many independent artists today, open editions make more sense than limited editions. They allow the work to remain available, avoid artificial constraints, and focus on sharing rather than managing scarcity. Read more at Art Marketing News.

The Contemporary Market for Open Editions

The contemporary print market has shown resilience despite broader economic uncertainty. According to a mid-2026 report from Hanga House, total auction turnover for prints and editions remained stable year-on-year, with a notable shift toward private sales and digital platforms. The under-10,000 GBP segment, where open editions and accessible limited editions sit, saw the most transaction volume as new collectors entered the market. The trend toward younger, digitally native collectors continues to reshape demand patterns, with 79 percent of new print collectors discovering works through social media. Major galleries and publishers have expanded their editions programs in recent years. Pace Prints announced in February 2026 that it will open an 11,700-square-foot facility in Los Angeles. Almine Rech introduced an editions arm and online sales platform in 2020. David Zwirner launched Utopia Editions in 2021. Hauser and Wirth opened a dedicated editions space on West 18th Street in 2023. New fairs focusing on prints and editions have premiered, including the Paris Print Fair in 2022, the Brooklyn Fine Art Print Fair in 2024, and the inaugural Signatures Art Fair opening in Paris in November 2026. Accessibility as Value

An open edition is a statement about what art is for. The limited edition says: this is scarce, and scarcity creates value. The open edition says: this image should reach as many people as possible, and distribution itself is a form of value. Parrish's Daybreak on a million walls did more for his reputation than a limited edition of 50 ever could have. Adams's Yosemite prints, still in production after nearly 70 years, have introduced more people to fine art photography than any limited run could achieve.

If you want to understand the difference between open and limited editions, compare an Ansel Adams Special Edition print with one of his limited-edition portfolios. The Special Edition print is affordable, widely available, and produced to Adams's exact specifications. The limited-edition portfolio is scarce, numbered, and priced accordingly. Both are genuine Ansel Adams prints. The difference is not in quality but in the economic logic behind their production.
