Intaglio is not a single technique. It is a family. The word comes from the Italian "intagliare," meaning to cut or carve, and it describes every printmaking process where the ink sits in recessed lines or pits below the surface of a plate. When you see a print with a platemark, that pressed-in rectangle around the image where the plate met the paper, you are looking at an intaglio print. The press had to push the paper into the inked grooves with enough force to pick up the image, and that pressure left a physical impression in the paper. No other printmaking family does this. Relief prints have no platemark. Lithographs have no platemark. Screen prints have no platemark. Only intaglio leaves this trace, because only intaglio requires the paper to be forced into the plate.
Intaglio is a family of printmaking techniques in which the image is incised into a surface, typically a metal plate, and the incised lines or pits hold the ink. How Intaglio Works: Ink Below the Surface
All intaglio techniques share the same printing process, regardless of how the image is created on the plate. The plate, typically copper or zinc, is inked. Ink is rubbed into the recessed lines and pits, filling them completely. The surface of the plate is then wiped clean, using a stiff cloth called tarlatan for the first pass and a smooth final wipe, often with the palm of the hand or newspaper, to remove every trace of surface ink. Only the ink in the recessed areas remains.
Damp paper is placed on the plate, and both are run through a rolling press. The press has two heavy rollers that squeeze the plate and paper together with enormous pressure. The damp paper is forced into the inked recesses, picking up the image. The pressure is so great that it leaves a visible indentation around the edges of the plate, the platemark, on the paper. The blankets that cushion the press help distribute the pressure evenly and protect the paper from tearing.
The Yale University Art Gallery's Printed Picture project describes the process: "The printer would cover the plate completely with a fairly stiff ink, consisting of pigment in oil, and then wipe off the excess ink using a series of heavily starched cloths scrunched into balls. What distinguishes the intaglio techniques from each other is how the recessed areas are created. Engraving uses a burin to carve lines by hand. Etching uses acid to bite lines through a wax ground. Drypoint uses a needle to scratch lines, creating a burr. Aquatint uses powdered rosin and acid to create tonal pits. Mezzotint uses a rocker to roughen the entire plate and a burnisher to smooth areas for light. Each method produces a different quality of line or tone, but all share the same inking and printing process.
The Five Major Intaglio Techniques
Engraving
Engraving is the oldest intaglio technique, emerging in Europe in the 1430s. The artist cuts lines directly into a copper plate using a burin, a sharp steel tool. The lines are clean, precise, and deliberate, with a mechanical regularity that comes from the controlled action of the tool. Engraving requires years of training to master. Martin Schongauer and Albrecht Durer were the greatest practitioners. Engraving dominated European printmaking from 1450 to 1550, when etching began to replace it as the preferred medium for artists.
Etching
Etching emerged around 1500 and quickly became the most popular intaglio technique for artists. The plate is coated with an acid-resistant ground, the artist draws through the ground with a needle, and the plate is submerged in acid. The acid bites into the exposed metal, creating lines that hold ink. Because the artist draws through soft wax rather than carving into solid metal, etched lines have the freedom and spontaneity of a drawing. Rembrandt, Goya, and Whistler were the greatest etchers. Etching allowed painters to make prints without the years of training that engraving required.
Drypoint
Drypoint is the simplest intaglio technique. The artist scratches lines into a copper plate with a steel needle. No acid is used. The needle displaces metal, creating a burr along the edges of the line. This burr holds extra ink, producing a characteristically rich, velvety line. The burr is fragile and wears away within a dozen or so impressions, making drypoint editions very small. Rembrandt was the first artist to fully exploit drypoint, combining it with etching for tonal richness.
Aquatint
Aquatint is a variant of etching that produces tonal areas rather than lines. Powdered rosin is melted onto the plate, and acid bites around the rosin particles, creating thousands of tiny pits that hold ink. The result is a printable tone ranging from pale gray to deep black. Goya used aquatint to create the shadows and darknesses that make his prints the most emotionally powerful intaglio prints ever made. Aquatint is often combined with etching on a single plate, with etched lines providing structure and aquatint providing tone.
Mezzotint
Mezzotint works in reverse from every other intaglio technique. The entire plate is roughened with a rocker, creating a surface that would print as solid black. The artist then scrapes and burnishes areas to reduce the ink held, creating lighter tones. The image emerges from dark to light. Mezzotint produces the deepest, richest blacks and the smoothest tonal gradations of any printmaking technique. It was the preeminent medium for reproducing oil paintings before photography, particularly in 18th-century England.
Origins and History
Intaglio printmaking emerged in Europe in the 1430s, probably in the Upper Rhine region of Germany. The technique grew out of goldsmiths' practices. Goldsmiths had been engraving designs into metal objects, including armor and religious objects, since ancient times. The niello technique, in which a dark alloy is rubbed into engraved lines to create contrast, goes back to late antiquity. The idea of printing from an engraved plate likely came from goldsmiths taking impressions on paper of their designs to keep as records.
Engraving was the first intaglio technique, followed by drypoint in the 1430s, etching around 1500, aquatint in the 1760s, and mezzotint in 1642. After the decline of the main relief technique of woodcut around 1550, intaglio techniques dominated both artistic printmaking and most types of illustration and popular prints until the mid-19th century, when lithography overtook them as a more economical form of printing.
The basic tools and materials of intaglio printmaking have not changed over six centuries. Intaglio remains a living tradition. Contemporary printmakers continue to use all five major intaglio techniques, often in combination on a single plate. The press, the plate, the ink, and the wiping process are essentially the same as they were in the 15th century. What has changed is the range of materials available: zinc and aluminium plates alongside copper, ferric chloride alongside nitric acid, acrylic-based grounds alongside traditional wax. But the fundamental principle, ink below the surface, pressed into paper under high pressure, is unchanged.
How to Spot an Intaglio Print
The platemark is the most reliable indicator. If you see a rectangular indentation on the paper around the image, you are looking at an intaglio print. The indentation is caused by the edge of the metal plate pressing into the paper under the pressure of the rolling press. No other printmaking family produces a platemark.
Once you have identified a print as intaglio, the line quality tells you which technique was used. Clean, precise, mechanical lines suggest engraving. Free, spontaneous, drawn lines suggest etching. Soft, dark, velvety lines suggest drypoint. Granular tonal areas suggest aquatint. Smooth, continuous tonal gradations with deep blacks suggest mezzotint. Many prints combine multiple techniques on a single plate.
Look for plate tone. Some intaglio prints, particularly etchings by Rembrandt and Whistler, have a thin film of ink left on the surface of the plate rather than being wiped completely clean. This produces a subtle tonal haze that fills the background. The presence of plate tone does not change the technique, but it is a sign of a painterly approach to intaglio printing.
Intaglio is one of the four major families of printmaking. Relief printing (woodcut, wood engraving, linocut) prints from raised surfaces.
