In the summer of 2025, visitors to the Healthcare Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka stepped in front of a 98-inch 4K display and found themselves inside Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa. They did not touch a screen or press a button. They moved their bodies, and the wave responded. A million particles, simulated in real time using WebGPU, shifted and flowed according to the visitors' movements, tracked by a Kinect sensor. The installation, called Waves of Connection, was created by Utsubo, a French-founded studio based in Osaka. Interactive art is art that responds to the viewer's input. The input can be physical movement, touch, voice, gaze, biometric data, or any other detectable signal. The artwork uses sensors, cameras, microphones, or other input devices to detect the viewer's actions and changes its output in response. The viewer is not a passive observer but an active participant whose presence shapes the work. Each person's experience of the artwork is different because each person interacts with it differently.

Interactive art replaces the one-way relationship between artwork and viewer with a feedback loop. The artwork presents something: an image, a sound, a light, a text. The viewer responds, consciously or unconsciously. The artwork detects the response and changes. The viewer detects the change and responds again. This loop can continue indefinitely, and the artwork is never the same twice because the viewer's input is never the same twice.
The technical implementation varies widely. Simple interactive works use buttons, switches, or pressure sensors. More complex works use computer vision to track body position, gesture recognition to interpret hand movements, audio analysis to respond to voice or sound, and biometric sensors to read heart rate, skin conductance, or brain activity. The output can be visual, auditory, kinetic, or any combination. Real-time rendering engines like Unity, Unreal Engine, and TouchDesigner process the input and generate the output with minimal latency, creating the impression of immediate response.
A 2024 study published in MDPI Multimodal Technologies and Interaction presented a qualitative analysis of an interactive installation that used real-time generative AI to co-create Ukiyo-e-style artwork through embodied inputs. The system interpreted physical presence, object manipulation, body poses, and gestures to influence AI-generated visuals on a large screen. The research found that tangible objects with clear visual features like color and pattern were the most intuitive input method, while bodily poses served as compositional modifiers. Interactive art emerged in the 1960s alongside installation art and performance art, all of which challenged the idea that art is something you look at from a distance. The earliest interactive works used simple technology. Nicolas Schöffer's CYSP 1 (1956) was a kinetic sculpture that responded to light and sound changes in its environment using photoelectric cells and a microphone. Edward Ihnatowicz's The Senster (1970) used hydraulic motors and microphones to move a large metal arm toward sounds in its vicinity, creating a creature-like response to audience presence.
The foundational figure in interactive art is Myron Krueger. In the early 1970s, Krueger created Videoplace, a system that used video cameras to capture the viewer's silhouette and project it onto a screen alongside computer-generated graphic elements that responded to the viewer's movements. A viewer could touch a projected shape and the shape would react. Krueger coined the term "artificial reality" to describe this work, and his 1983 book Artificial Reality II laid out principles that still guide interactive art today. Videoplace was demonstrated at exhibitions throughout the 1970s and 1980s and is considered the first interactive art system that used computer vision as its primary input.
The 1990s brought networked interactivity. Lynn Hershman Leeson's Lorna (1979-1983) was an early interactive videodisc installation where viewers used a remote control to navigate a woman's apartment and life. Her later Deep Contact (1989) allowed viewers to touch a screen and interact with a character. These works anticipated interactive narrative forms that would become common in digital media art.
The 2000s saw interactive art enter museums. Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's Vectorial Elevation (1999), created for the Zócalo in Mexico City, allowed members of the public to control robotic searchlights via a website. The work has since been installed in cities worldwide, including Dublin, Vancouver, and New York. Random International's Rain Room (2012) used 3D tracking cameras to detect visitors' positions and stop the rain falling above them, letting people walk through a downpour without getting wet. The work was shown at the Barbican in London and MoMA in New York, where it drew hours-long queues and became one of the most photographed interactive installations ever made.
Krueger's Videoplace (1970-1985) established the conceptual and technical foundation of interactive art. The system placed viewers inside a responsive digital environment where their silhouettes interacted with computer-generated elements. Krueger's insight was that the interface itself could be the artwork, not a tool for accessing artwork. His work is held in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Lozano-Hemmer creates large-scale interactive installations that use technology to create public experiences. Pulse Room (2006) uses biometric sensors to detect visitors' heart rates and translates them into the flashing of hundreds of incandescent bulbs suspended from the ceiling. Vectorial Elevation (1999) lets the public control robotic searchlights via web interfaces. The London-based art collective Random International created Rain Room (2012), a 100-square-meter field of falling water that stops wherever a person walks. The installation uses 3D tracking cameras and a custom water management system. Rain Room has been exhibited at the Barbican, MoMA, LACMA, and the Yuz Museum in Shanghai. The work demonstrates how interactive art can create a visceral physical experience, not just a visual one.
The Japanese collective TeamLab creates immersive digital environments where viewers walk through projected landscapes that respond to their presence. Their Borderless exhibition, which opened in Tokyo in 2018 and moved to a permanent space in 2024, fills an entire building with interactive projections. Flowers bloom under visitors' feet, butterflies scatter when touched, and digital water flows around bodies. TeamLab's work represents the convergence of interactive art, projection mapping, and immersive art.
Mital's The Game of Whispers (2024), commissioned by LACMA's Art + Technology Lab, is an interactive generative video game that draws parallels between Mughal Empire political intrigue and AI-driven disinformation. Non-playable characters driven by large language models engage in lifelike conversations, creating layers of intrigue as rumors spread through a digital Red Fort. Interactive art in 2026 is shaped by two developments. First, the integration of generative AI into interactive systems. Artists can now use real-time machine learning models that respond to viewer input with generated images, sounds, or text. The Ukiyo-e installation studied in the 2024 MDPI paper and Mital's Game of Whispers both demonstrate this shift. AI-driven interactivity creates a new kind of feedback loop: the viewer acts, the AI interprets and generates, and the result is unpredictable even to the artist.
Second, the availability of low-cost sensors and powerful real-time rendering tools. Kinect depth cameras, WebGPU for browser-based graphics, and game engines like Unity and Unreal have lowered the technical barrier.
