Of all the intaglio printmaking techniques, drypoint is the most direct and the most fragile. There is no acid, no wax ground, no chemical process. The artist takes a steel needle and scratches lines into a copper plate. That is the entire setup. But the needle does not just cut a groove. It plows through the metal, displacing a thin ridge of copper on either side of the line. This ridge is called the burr, and it is what makes drypoint look like nothing else in printmaking. The burr holds a thick film of ink that prints as a soft, dark, velvety line. The burr is also what limits drypoint: it is so delicate that the pressure of the printing press crushes it flat within a dozen or so impressions. After that, the burr is gone, and the print loses the quality that made it worth making.
Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique in which lines are scratched directly into a metal plate with a sharp needle. No acid is used. The displaced metal forms a burr along the edges of the line, and this burr holds extra ink during printing, producing a characteristically rich, soft, velvety line. Because the burr wears away quickly under the pressure of the press, drypoint plates produce only a small number of good impressions, typically fewer than 25 from copper.

The tool is simple: a hardened steel needle, held like a pencil. The artist scratches directly into the surface of a copper or zinc plate. Copper is preferred because it is softer and produces a more pronounced burr. The needle carves a shallow groove, but more importantly, it pushes metal up and out along both sides of the groove. This raised ridge of metal is the burr.
When the plate is inked, ink fills both the groove and the rough surface of the burr. After the surface is wiped, ink remains in the groove and clinging to the burr. During printing, the press forces damp paper into the inked lines and burr, picking up both. The result is a line that is not sharp and clean like an engraved line but soft, fuzzy, and dark. The burr prints as a slightly irregular halo around the main line, giving drypoint its signature velvety quality.
The size of the burr depends on the angle of the needle. A steep angle produces a large burr that holds a lot of ink and prints a wide, dark line. A shallow angle produces a smaller burr and a sharper line. Some printmakers use a diamond-tipped needle or a carbide point for harder plates, but the principle is the same: the tool plows metal rather than cutting it cleanly.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes drypoint as "the simplest method for producing intaglio prints" but notes its fundamental limitation: "the delicate burr wears away so quickly that only a small number of good impressions, no more than a dozen, can be taken from the plate." Drypoint is one of the oldest intaglio techniques. The earliest known surviving intaglio prints, undated designs for playing cards made in Germany probably in the late 1430s, were made using drypoint. The technique predates engraving as a printmaking method, though engraving quickly became more popular because it produced plates that could print in larger editions.
The first artist to specialize in drypoint was the Housebook Master, also known as the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, active in Germany around 1470 to 1500. He made drypoint prints on iron plates, and his work has a spontaneity and directness that engraving could not match. Albrecht Durer produced three drypoints in the early 16th century, including The Holy Family (c. 1512), at a time when he was particularly interested in painterly effects. But for an artist who was always concerned with the profitability of printmaking, drypoint's limited edition size made it impractical. A well-engraved plate could produce several hundred impressions. A drypoint plate might produce a dozen.
In the 17th century, Rembrandt became the first artist to fully exploit drypoint's potential. He used it both alone and in combination with etching, building up tonal passages with drypoint burr over etched lines. In the 19th century, drypoint found favor again during the Etching Revival, when artists valued scarcity and uniqueness over large editions. A 2021 study published in Histoire de l'Art traced how drypoint's natural limitation, its small edition size, became a commercial advantage in the 19th century. A 2025 doctoral dissertation from the University of Geneva explored the revival of drypoint in the second half of the 19th century, asking why the technique became popular at that specific moment. The dissertation treats drypoint as an "agent of the creative process," arguing that its aesthetics and working method corresponded to the creative agendas of artists who valued directness, spontaneity, and small editions. The Housebook Master was the first artist to specialize in drypoint. Working in Germany, he produced prints on iron plates that have a directness and informality unusual for the period. His prints are rare, surviving in small numbers, which is consistent with drypoint's limited edition size. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam holds a significant collection of his work.
Durer made only three drypoints, including The Holy Family (c. 1512) and Saint Jerome Seated Near a Pollard Willow (1512). These prints show Durer experimenting with the velvety tonal effects that drypoint can produce, particularly in the foliage of the willow tree. Durer abandoned drypoint after these experiments, likely because the limited edition size made it commercially unattractive.
Rembrandt was the first artist to fully exploit drypoint. He used it extensively in his later prints, including The Three Crosses (1653) and Christ Presented to the People (1655), both of which exist in multiple states showing how Rembrandt reworked the plates with drypoint over etched lines. In The Three Crosses, the fourth state introduces dramatic drypoint shading that transforms the composition, plunging the scene into darkness. Rembrandt's combination of etching for linear structure and drypoint for tonal richness created prints of unprecedented depth and atmosphere.
Whistler used drypoint throughout his career, often combining it with etching. His drypoint prints from the Thames Set (1859-1861) and his Venice series (1879-1880) use the burr to create atmospheric effects of light and shadow on water and architecture. Whistler valued the scarcity of drypoint impressions, carefully controlling the quality of each pull and destroying plates once the burr had degraded.
Cassatt used drypoint in combination with etching and aquatint to produce her celebrated series of prints depicting mothers and children. Her The Bath (1890-1891) combines drypoint, soft-ground etching, and aquatint to create a print that has the intimacy and softness of a pastel drawing. The drypoint burr contributes to the gentle, hazy quality of the figures.
The signature of drypoint is the velvety line. If a print has lines that look soft, dark, and slightly fuzzy, with a halo of ink around the main stroke, it is likely a drypoint. The burr produces this effect. No other intaglio technique creates the same quality of line.
Look for variation within the edition. Because the burr wears down with each impression, early prints in a drypoint edition will be darker and richer than later ones. If you can compare two impressions of the same drypoint print, the difference will be visible. The first impression may have deep, velvety blacks. The tenth or fifteenth will be noticeably lighter and sharper, as the burr has been flattened and only the shallow groove remains.
Drypoint is often combined with etching. In a combined print, the etched lines provide the linear structure, and the drypoint adds tonal richness and atmosphere. Rembrandt's prints are the best examples of this combination. The etched lines are clean and precise. The drypoint passages are soft and dark. The contrast between the two is part of what makes these prints so visually rich.
Drypoint belongs to the intaglio family, which includes etching, engraving, aquatint, and mezzotint. Etching uses acid to bite lines, producing freer marks. Engraving uses a burin to carve clean, precise lines. Aquatint uses powdered rosin to create tonal areas. Mezzotint roughens the entire plate and smooths areas for light. Drypoint is the simplest and most direct of these techniques, requiring only a needle and a plate, but its fragility makes it the most limited in edition size.
